New in the foundation department by Maybelline is their Dream Velvet formula and it promises:
- Hydrated skin. Matte finish. Flawless face.
- Turning heads, bringing your A-game, the #nofilter selfie.
- Putting your best face forward.
The Maybelline Dream Velvet foundation comes in 12 shades ranging from 05 Warm Porcelain to 95 Coconut – although the shades definitely skew more to the paler side of things. You get the usual fluid ounce of product in a squeeze tube that comes with a nozzle tip (and there’s even a little foil seal on it when you first purchase it so you know it’s not been tampered with). The packaging is slim, compact and sleek. The tube is easy to squeeze and it’s easy to get product out of this tube since the plastic is soft and pliable (something I highly appreciate). The product itself is like a thick, whipped mousse but it spreads and blends easily on the face.
The one thing that really set me back in trying this foundation though was the colours. If you take a look at the swatches above, you’ll notice that 15 Ivory is really quite dark and is more attuned to my skin tone in the summer. However, even the shade 10 Porcelain Ivory is still quite dark and VERY warm compared to my skin tone. In fact, it looks downright peachy. I put off trying this foundation for a week because I was scared it would not match my face and I’d be left looking like a fool at work.
I was TOTALLY wrong:
That’s how 10 Porcelain Ivory looks on my skin! It’s a FLAWLESS match in my book *and* it even matches my neck! I have no idea what the heck is in this foundation to cause it to colour match like that, but the shade is bang on and I couldn’t be happier. Given how odd the original swatch looked on the underside of my arm… I’m kind of astounded. I don’t know how you did it Maybelline – but you did, and it’s awesome!
Final Thoughts
I’m in LOVE with this new Dream Velvet foundation! Aside from my initial scare with the colour matching, this product has seriously zero faults. (For reference, my skin is fairly dry right now.) I get a full day’s wear out of it (around 10 hours). I have no creasing or sinking into fine lines (usually an issue on my forehead because I raise my eyebrows a lot). It feels soft and velvety to the touch. It doesn’t make my face itchy. It doesn’t go patchy or peel anywhere. The coverage is truly flawless and it was a breeze applying it to my face since it requires very little blending to get it to sink in (I use a Real Techniques sponge). I love the squeeze tube and the compact size. In short, I cannot believe how amazing this foundation is! I really don’t have any faults for how this foundation wore on my skin or looked. /bows down before Maybelline

I know right? Especially given how the colour appears in my arm swatch!
Flawless!! Love this stuff!!

I was totally astonished! I love it so much!
I picked up the lightest shade and nearly cried when I saw the color that came out of the tube since it looked so dark. I was convinced it didn’t match my skintone, but it actually does! It’s maybe just a smidge too dark for my ghostly winter skin, but it’ll be a good match with just a bit more sun. I also got complimented on my skin the first time I wore it so that was pretty great. I am actually in love with this foundation but I wish they had a bigger range of shades…

I don’t understand the witchcraft involved with this foundation at all. The swatches do not translate to how they look on the skin, which is a huge bonus since the colours seem so odd when swatched!
I love how smooth it made my skin feel – one of the easiest to wear foundations I’ve tried to date!
Ooh I’ll have to swatch this one to see if there’s a good match for me!

I think there should be! Don’t be too deceived by the swatch colours… they look WEIRD, but the product does melt onto the skin!
Ooh, glad this was a pleasant surprise! Always nice when the shade is more wearable on the face then in the swatch. I like the coverage too 🙂

It was a super pleasant surprise. I mean… that swatch does not look like it would work! Coverage is amazing. 🙂
This looks really great on you! Glad it had magical shade matching properties!

A solid choice! Mine all recently kind of dried up so I either gave them away if they were still somewhat useable, or just chucked them. 🙁
I want to know how it matches like that!!!
I love that you raise your eyebrows a lot, I hope it’s for comic effect. 🙂
Seriously, my face is very expressive. Occasionally someone will make a comment about future laugh lines or so on. I’d rather look happy than wrinkle free!
lol yes, it is! I’m super expressive and I don’t care if it leads to laugh lines. Wrinkles show character as far as I’m concerned! I’m so glad you feel the same way about wrinkles. 🙂
Wow, that looks beautiful on you! I’m surprised how different this worked on you than it did on me! I wanted to like it so badly.

Skin is so freaking tough. There are some foundations that work so well on others that I want them to work just as good on me. 🙁
I am so impressed by it too, it’s one of my faves. 15 is my perfect match so I entered!
Oo yay, shade match!
What an interesting review! As a dry, pale gal myself, I assumed this would be a total fail. I’m glad it worked out so well!

I thought there was no way in hell this would be match me. Was totally surprised when it did!
Whoa, no kidding at how different the swatch looked in comparison to your face! I must say though, your skin without foundation is absolutely flawless and radiant!

Crazy difference isn’t it between the swatch and my face? In a good way, thankfully!
And yes, I am quite lucky to have very good skin. No acne, little to no redness heh… I love my skin!

I looooved their older four shadow eyeshadow quads. I wonder if they’re still around…
thanks for the chance to win – this looks like a great product — did you try it with the applicator, or just using your fingers… ?
Good luck Joy!
I used a beauty sponge (the one by Real Techniques) to apply this to my face.
I really love Maybelline concealer cover sticks! So affordable and effective!
Ooo nice pick! Good luck!

It’s definitely one of the absolute best I’ve ever tried!

It’s sooo nice!
I think this foundation is amazing and I cannot to try the new vivid matte lipstick !!
I hope you like the vivid mattes – the shade range is beautiful!
I think this foundation is amazing and cannot wait to try vivid matte lipstick !!!
I have tried this foundation ,and I like it quite well. I like that it don`t make my face like oily or greasy like many other foundations do!
Thanks for the giveaway 🙂
Totally with you Karla. I do struggle with excess oil as a RESULT of a lot of foundations (which is really weird), so I’m so please that this was so smooth and matte!
I actually came over here because I saw the picture on your facebook. I love how neat it looks. It appears to blend really well.
I don’t actually have a favourite Maybelline product right now.
It did blend really, really well. I was surprised at how well given that it’s a thicker foundation!
I’ve always been a big fan on Maybelline Mascaras, I find they work best for me!
Is any particular one your absolute favourite Rebby?
I’ve tried Maybelline‘s Dream Velvet foundation before and loved it!
I’m so glad you love it too, Ivy!
I really like the before & after pic!. Thanks for the review, when you get to see a product being used it helps so much!
No problem Bailey, I totally agree with you!
Wow, your skin looks flawless! I’ve always been a fan of the Great Lash Mascara. I try so many different kinds, but always find myself reaching for the pink tube!

Thank you so much for doing this review, and for actually applying it so we could see what it looks like on. I had found some photos of swatches, and none of the colours looked like they would match my skin. This really helped me.
Hi Kathy! So glad this helped you! I personally found the swatches on my own skin (!!) very, VERY deceiving, so I would absolutely encourage you to check out the foundation in the shade you THINK you would be and give it a shot. I was incredulous on how well it blended out and looked, despite the swatch! Absolutely one of my favourite foundations I own now, and I hope you love it just as much as I do. 🙂
YAS I was sent this foundation but it was in Soft Beige or something like that for some reason and that’s WAAAY too dark for me :'( Fingers crossed because I’m pretty sure the Ivory one is the one I’d need. Dying to try this!! Fave Maybelline product is probably the Falsies mascara 🙂

Any particular mascara of theirs that you love Tammy?
I haven’t tried this product yet but it sounds nice.I am fair also so I can see why you might be hesitant when you see the shades. Looks dark but it matched your skin perfectly!
Hi Dana! Yeah the swatch was so headscratching. I was like… this is NOT going to work. Imagine my surprise when it did!
I love Maybelline, especially their Fit Me MATTE + PORELESS FOUNDATION, their mascara, & their lipsticks.
Good luck Yesenia!
