Buxom recently launched their Plumpline Lip Liners in a whopping 20 shades! These new lip liners promise a plumping full coverage formula with a creamy matte finish.
The Plumpline shades cover the usual suspects in a lip range: nudes, to pinks, to reds and a handful of purply-vampy shades. Although they claim to be creamy, I’d argue and say they’re really not. While they do glide on the lips smoothly (which is fantastic), these are very much a drying matte formula once they’re locked in place.
Most surprising to me is that the Plumplines are an incredibly fat pencil. Most lip pencils tend to be on the skinny side for preciseness, so I wasn’t really sure how this was going to work out. Also, due to the size, I felt more like these should be used in place of lipstick.
They also come with a brush which… honestly had me scratching my head a little bit. I’ve never felt the need to use a brush with a lip pencil before. Since this also isn’t a creamy formula, you can’t really use the brush to blend anything out. I tried it, and the lip pencil really wasn’t going anywhere after I’d applied it.

My Thoughts
As a lip liner, the Buxom Plumpline Lip Liners do their job: my lipstick stayed in place and, rather amazingly for me, I didn’t have any lip line bleedout even with the vampier shades. I also really love the colour range – of the ten I tried, there wasn’t a single shade in there that I wouldn’t wear on the regular.
But honestly… I think this is a really weird product. The fatness of the pencil makes for some awkward application and it’s far less precise because of it. I ended up sharpening the pencil quite a bit in order to keep the tip as precise as possible. I also don’t understand why there’s a brush attached to this pencil. It’s a dry formula when it gets on your lips, so you really haven’t got a hope in hell of using the brush to blur out any edges. It also claims to be plumping, but I can’t figure out where on earth that would come from unless you’re overlining your lips. There is nothing in formula to support the look of plumper lips.
I’m sad that I don’t like how fat the pencil is because it really makes it difficult for me to get a precise line (and I’m already not that great at being precise in general!). I love the shade range and I would absolutely love to wear these under lipsticks, but the lack of preciseness absolutely ruins it for me.
The Buxom Plumpline Lip Liners are available on sephora.ca for $20 CAD each or on sephora.com for $17 USD each.

These look gorgeous and I actually love just regular lip crayons but these seem to be a strange hybrid.

If these performed like a regular lip crayon, I would’ve loved them. But instead they’re just a chubby lip pencil? It doesn’t make any sense. I freaking LOVE the colours too – which is what makes it all the more saddening. 🙁
You could apply a layer of clear balm to your lips first, then wear them like a stain. Just apply to the centre of your lips and rub.

That’s true! But in general I’m not willing to hassle much with my lips – I just want to put it on and go, you know? (For the same reason that I can’t stand dealing with ombre lips, or gloss in the center on top of lipstick, etc.)
I agree that fat pencils make it awkward for precise application. And I don’t see how you would use the brush either. It’s too bad that these didn’t quite deliver on application because the colours are beautiful!

Maybe they figured you’d want to use the brush with your lipstick and they’re saving you a tool?

I mean, that’s not a bad idea.. but then like.. they’re so large you’ve almost giving the impression that they can be worn without lipstick? Look, just the fact that we’re trying to figure it all out means no good things. They’ve confused their audience!
I know! The colours are stunning but like… I can’t do much with them. 🙁
These colours are really beautiful. I really like Incognito, Stakeout, Espionage. It’s so hard to find dark lipliners that are so rich in pigment that you can wear them on their own, and these seem very pigmented. I am assuming that might be the purpose of this product. But you are definitely right, if they are to fat to precisely line your lips, then that might be a problem. Lipliners should make lipstick application more easy and precise not other way around.
Its refreshing to see an honest review although you received these from a brand. I appreciate it.😘😘
No problem! I struggle to give anything other than an honest review since it pains me personally. It also hurts in the sense that you just WANT to love something because a brand sent it to you… but it doesn’t always work out that way. 🙁
The colours seriously are incredible though. I would have LOVED if these were in a slim format for easier application – hands down they wouldn’t been a great collection of lip liners then!
I really thought they were normal size from looking at pictures. Funny how that works. The formula sound great and I love the colours. I’m just not a big fan of sharpening though. I feel like i’m waisting product.
Yeah a lot of photography can really mess with the size of the items, you know? (That or I need to add something in for size comparison!) The sharpening is also a hassle, and you need to have a big sharpener since these are definitely enormous!
It sucks that you had so much trouble with the products because the colors look great on you!
I know! I love how all of the shades look on me, but the whole thing just didn’t up working out for me. 🙁
I love Stealth and Incognito and I just wear these as crayon lipsticks. The brush helps fill them in. Simple! I have reordered these 3xs.
So glad you love them!
