The Stuff You Should Travel With

201608_travelproducts1

I know summer is the time when a lot of people travel – they go abroad, they go to hot destinations (which I’ve never understood personally – Toronto is freaking hot enough during the summer, I don’t need to add MORE degrees on the thermometer thanks!), etc. But for me, the spring and fall seasons are when *I* like to travel. I feel like it’s a more comfortable temperature and I can do a wider variety of things. So these products are all the reasonable things I bring or WISH I had brought (we’ll get to that in a moment) with me while travelling.

The Random Basics I NEVER Remember To Bring (But Should!)

  • Alright, first up, one of the things I struggle with the most is a hair dryer and flat iron in European countries. I actually FRIED not only my flat iron, but also my hair on my most recent trip to Iceland back in April because the stupid flat iron decided to turn to inferno levels of heat even while plugged into the massive converter. While I still haven’t been able to find an easily accessible dual voltage flat iron for this post, I gotta tell you guys – GO  GET ONE. It’ll save you the heartache of your burnt ass hair (which I’m still dealing with!). On the plus side, I did find an amazing dual voltage mini blow dryer by Sephora. It’s $33 CAD on their web site and it has a knob that you turn that changes the voltage. You’ll still need a plug converter, but at least you don’t run the risk of lighting the place on fire (always a bonus). Despite what their web site shows, this blow dryer is TINY, but it packs one hell of a punch!
  • Also randomly handy? A trousse of nail tools (also by Sephora). I was sent this product in a PR box and not being a nail person I thought nothing of it. And then, for some unknown reason, I threw it in our luggage for Iceland and it turned out to be handiest thing EVER. Snag or break a nail? Need a random string cut off your shirt? Sharp implement needed for some other unknown reason? This kit has you covered. It also zips up compactly so you’re not left digging for tools at the bottom of your bag. Goes for $25 CAD at Sephora!
  • And lastly, we have the incredibly Travalo that people have been talking about for years… with good reason. This mini atomizer is perfect for decanting your favourite perfume into its tiny body for travel. You pop the top off your perfume bottle, slot the bottom of the Travalo onto it and pump it until it fills up with your desired scent. No more carrying around enormous clunky (albeit pretty, if not ridiculously extravagant) bottles of perfume with you on vacation! I find Travalos at my local drugstore in the $5-8 price range.

The Stuff That Keeps You From Smelling Like a Wilde-beast

  • If I can get all of my products into a squeezy tube or pump bottle container, I’m a happy camper. I pick up colourful empty squeeze tubes from the drugstore (NOT the bottle kinds!) and dump in my currently being used shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. Or, if you have them on hand, grab those tiny freebie samples you get at drugstores and/or holiday minis!
  • If you don’t want to cart a bunch of minis around with you for body wash, another alternative is to grab a new bar of your favourite soap and treat it as a disposable. More often than not, I’ll bring a brand new bar of soap with me on vacation and I’ll use whatever I can while I’m there, and then just junk it afterwards. Bars of soap aren’t expensive, so you don’t feel like you’re leaving a pricey product behind AND you don’t have to bring anything back with you! My favourite bar soap is always going to be Lever 2000 and I’ve been using it since my teens.
  • Moisturizer with sunscreen is an easy one for those who are going to be outside often. I’m not always a fan of sunscreen in my moisturizer if I’m playing sports, but for day to day wear, Aveeno‘s Daily Moisturizers are a must have. The pump top also comes with a swivel so you can lock it off – saves worrying about spillage in you bag later on.

The Random Bits and Bobs

  • You will not catch me on vacation without Q-tips. And yes, I use the brand name because I feel like the cardboard wand is just that must sturdier than other brands I’ve used in the past. This small travel pack was swiped from my mother’s cabinet when I moved out of the house when I was 19 years old and I’ve held on to it for dear life ever since. This little baby has travelled everywhere with me! Long live the Q-tip!
  • I use Gillette‘s Venus razor on the regular, so I was SUPER happy to find the tiny Venus Snap version a few years back at the drugstore on clearance for a couple bucks. I don’t know why more people don’t talk about and/or use this tiny little razor. It fits the regular Gillette heads and it comes with its own carrying case that has little whole to help ventilate the razor. It’s small, compact and sturdy. If you see this – just buy it, you won’t regret it. I also skip on shave cream while on vacation and just use my conditioner since it works just as well as any shaving cream I’ve every tried!
  • I’ve long hated the toothbrush travel tubes where the top always seems to come off the base, so I was really happy when I was sent a Steripod last year and I’ve continued to buy and use them ever since. It’s a small clip on disinfectant/protectant clasp for the head of your toothbrush and I *love* it.

The Sun Protection

  • If you’re going anywhere hot, for the love of god, bring some sunscreen with you. I’ve been blazing through my Sun Bum and Hawaiian Tropic sunscreens this summer so they’re at the forefront of my thoughts. I’ve also thrown in the Sun Bum Cool Down lotion in there because if you do happen to catch too much sun, this product had the HIGHEST concentration of aloe in it, even when I compared it to my green aloe gels!

And I *think* that covers it all. Just for fun, tell me in the comments the one item you wish you had brought on your most recent vacation, but didn’t!

Since I know everyone's always curious what was and was not sent to someone for a roundup post, here are the items that were sent to me for consideration: Sun Bum & Hawaiian Tropic, Steripod, Travalo & the Sephora items.

Too Faced Sketch Markers (Review & Swatches)

Too Faced Sketch Markers

Brand new to Too Faced‘s lineup of products are the ever so brightly coloured Sketch Markers!

“Sketch Marker is an advanced liquid eyeliner inspired by Japanese Calligraphy Pens. Its formula acts as an artist’s best drawing ink, created to be exceptionally smooth, vivid, waterproof and ideal for lining eyes. The flexible tip allows you to effortlessly create paintbrush-like strokes for daytime to dramatic cat eyes and everything in between. Available in a kaleidoscope of colors from soft pastels to bold pop art shades. Wear a single color or pair up to create a double eyeliner work of art.”

Since a pen style liquid liner is my preferred way to apply liquid liners, I was pretty darn happy to see that these were not in a “dip pot” style. I do prefer a brush tip, but these have a really flexible felt tip which is probably the closest I’m ever going to get without it actually being a full on brush. I’m also happy to report that they come in a wide variety of COLOURS which I’m finding more and more brands are doing lately. There are 12 shades in total – you’ve got your basic white, black and brown, but there’s a gorgeous papaya shade, a few purples and some stunning greens and blues.

The Sketch Markers taper to a fine point and I can happily report that the ink from the inner cartridge actually flows all the way to the end of the tip. I know this seems like a basic function of a pen-style liquid liner, but I can’t tell you know the number of brands do not deliver on this (MAC’s fluidline pens were my most recent disappointment, for example). It’s worth mentioning that although these are labelled waterproof, I’m afraid that they’re more water resistant than waterproof.

Both the Espresso and Steel Blue shades swatched completely opaque in one swipe. At a glance, the Espresso shade looks like a satin, whereas the Steel Blue is more matte (there’s really not much of a difference on your eyes though).

Final Thoughts

If you like a flexible felt tip pen-style eyeliner that delivers opacity in one swipe, longevity in the formula (these have EASILY lasted me a whole work day and then some), and a fluidity that ensures you’ll get product at the very tip of the brush, then the Too Faced Sketch Markers are 100% for you. You also have the flexibility of choosing one of the usual shades (black or brown) or branching out into something a little bit more fun-loving amongst the vibrant shades. I’m currently eyeballing the Papaya Peach shade for my next Sephora order because I don’t have anything like that colour at all!

(Also, huge thanks to my husband for the adorable cat drawings!)

The Too Faced Sketch Markers can be purchased on sephora.ca for $26 CAD or on sephora.com for $20 USD.

MAC Cosmetics It’s a Strike! (Review, Swatches & Look)

MAC - It's a Strike!

Coming soon to a MAC counter near you: MAC‘s It’s a Strike! limited edition collection!

Head straight to the fast lane and have a ball with M∙A∙C It’s a Strike! A range of Lipstick and Cremesheen Glass is racked in red. Rich eye shadow and Fluidline Pen shades will have everyone begging to join your league, while easy hues of Casual Colour are right up anyone’s alley. Practice a clean follow-through with three creamy colors of M∙A∙C Studio Nail Lacquer. Finally, knock them all down with the luminous allure of new Pearlmatte Face Powder.

My main excitement in this collection was stemmed not only by the new pearlmatte face powder (sadly, not pictured in this post), but also the GORGEOUS new eyeshadow shades!

MAC It's a Strike! eyeshadows - Carbon, Bowl Out, Bowlarama & 300 Game
MAC It’s a Strike! eyeshadows – Carbon, Bowl Out, Bowlarama & 300 Game

While you’ve got your usual Carbon in there, there’s also a glorious mid-tone brown-grey in Bowl Out (matte), an incredibly fun yellow-green in Bowlarama (satin) and a to-die-for blackened cherry in 300 Game.

Aside from Carbon (who has long needed help in the pigmentation department), these eyeshadows swatched and wore like a dream. I love that there’s that sort of weird chartreuse colour that’s not quite green enough to be a true chartreuse. It played out so, SO nicely on my lids. Bowl Out – the grey brown – is the kind of shade I wanted Copperplate to be, but never was. And 300 Game is just way too awesome of a dark red to ignore! I’m also really, REALLY happy that this collection has only satin and matte eyeshadows – it’s just a nice change of pace, you know?

The lipsticks are also equally enticing – particularly the dazzle lipstick which I’ve never played with before!

Babes and Balls is a matte deep burgundy, whereas Liquid Lurex is described as a tarnished gold in a dazzle formula.

Although Liquid Lurex got pegged as “tarnished gold”, I personally see a very thin green-gold base with flecks of gold, silver and pink glitter dispersed throughout the formula. I thought it was a lot of fun to wear, even though it really is just a glitter lipstick. Despite the glitter, it’s not uncomfortable to wear. Removal is a bit of a pain however, as the glitter pieces will try their darnedest to stay stuck on your lips!

Babes and Balls is… well… just freaking stunning. Perhaps more suited towards the coming fall months (which I cannot WAIT for btw), Babes and Balls is a gorgeous matte lipstick that I know I’m going to get a ton of use out of. Not only is it a gorgeous shade, but my personal preference for lipsticks is always going to be a matte because they just stay PUT. And this one is no exception!

MAC Fluidline Pens in Vintage Brown, Indelibly Blue & Retro Black
MAC Fluidline Pens in Vintage Brown, Indelibly Blue & Retro Black

I’d never tried MAC‘s new(ish) Fluidline Pens, but I was eager to since I do love me a good winged liner on almost all of my makeup looks.

Sadly, I was not a fan of these pens. I found the felt tip pen made it very difficult to deposit the colour onto my lids. It’s like it just wasn’t flowing to the very end of the felt tip, which made it really frustrating to use. 🙁 These were a total pass for me. (I can’t recommend the fluidline gel pots enough though – those are excellent and I’ve been through several of them!)

MAC Casual Color in Blind Score

MAC‘s Casual Color formula is another completely new to me product as I had never previously been drawn in by them. Consider me a convert though, because this was incredible.

It smells like their vanilla lipsticks (and can be used on the lips as well) and blended onto my cheeks easily. When I first stippled the colour on my cheeks I was slightly taken aback by just how much colour it deposited. But with a little blending action, this dark colour faded out to a soft  yet vibrant cheek colour.
