Hi everyone! We just got back from our week long vacation to Iceland last night where we spent a ridiculous amount of money (holy heck, I knew the prices were high out there, but I didn’t know HOW HIGH!), attended Eve Online’s Fanfest, rode horseback through the countryside and visited the Blue Lagoon. We had a wonderful vacation, but it’s time for me to get back into the swing of things! So here are the beauty products I picked up during the month of April 2016!
Let’s start off with the Sephora Love Note sale items. I actually didn’t pick up much because I’m finding there’s not a lot I *need* lately in terms of new products (such a weird feeling). I was also somehow able to hang on to gift cards from CHRISTMAS so a lot of these items were actually free to me. (For convenience sake, I’m just listing the full retail value prices for the items.) Anyway, one item I felt like I was missing was a solid purple blush. I’ve been wearing a few purple eye looks lately and never felt like any blush in my collection was purple enough to complement them. Somehow I remembered seeing a review on Ivory Avenue for this Urban Decay blush in Bittersweet months and months ago, so I decided to pick that up since it’s a fairly unique shade. As I’ve been away, I haven’t actually tried it yet, so I haven’t a clue how it’s going to look on me!
I always end of picking up another Too FacedMelted lipstick whenever the sale happens because I am determined to eventually end up with the entire collection! This time I grabbed Melted Melon. It ends up being slightly less orange than Melted Coral. (Comparison post on those coming soon…ish.)
This was a TOTAL impulse buy while I was out randomly shopping with Jen of Vibrant Beauty Blog after brunch this past month. (That woman is wonderful to shop with, but holy hell she can be dangerous! 😉 ) And yet.. although it was impulse, my gift cards were still going strong (I’ve got generous friends and family!) so this was technically another freebie. This gorgeous beauty is the Gleam Glow Kit by Anastasia Beverly Hills. I opted for this one because I love my oranges and… the names. Hard Candy and Mimosa? Starburst and Crushed Pearl? YES PLEASE! Swatches will be up this Sunday for those interested.
This was a purchase by Julie of Swatch and Review, but she ended up passing it on to me when she found herself not using it. It’s great being known as a Too Faced addict! 😉
And also for being known as a red eyeshadow wearer! Another unloved product that will have a very, VERY good home in my collection!
This poor liquid lipstick… she’s certainly made the rounds (the hussy!). ThisA Retro Coral liquid lipstick was first bought by Laura of Lipstick and Laura, only she found it too bright/weird on her, so she passed it on to Shawna of Spill the Beauty who also didn’t like it. And then it fell to me (and I still haven’t tried it yet, eesh)! I’m curious to try this formula out because my only experience with matte liquid lips is via the Colour Pop Ultra Mattes and those are NOT a well loved product by me. (They give me sand paper lips… ew.)
These last two items by Gamla Apotekid are kind of hilarious. When I finished my half marathon in Reykjavik, Iceland last Saturday (that race recap will be coming next Friday), one of the women at the finish line handed me a ticket number and ushered me towards another woman. She didn’t seem to speak much English and I definitely don’t speak Icelandic (which makes me sad) and I was SO CONFUSED as to why I was being given a gift since a) that’s not customary after finishing a race, and b) DEFINITELY not customary when you’re one of the last people to finish! Plus you know… I’d just run for over two hours, my mind was a little woozy! So anyway, I was gifted two skincare items by Gamla Apotekid which I believe is an Icelandic brand. One of them is a cream and the other a lotion and I’m excited to see how they work out for me!
Of course… this wasn’t the whole of it. If you’d like to see what I picked up during IMATS New York which was also during April, please head on over to my YouTube channel to check out that particular haul:
A quick haul this month! Amazingly, I’ve been doing pretty well with sticking to my low buy! (Actually had a few moments in the past few months where I felt totally inundated by makeup so that definitely helped to curb my spending!)
The standout product this past month had to be the Too FacedPeanut Butter & Jelly palette. I was all kinds of stupid excited for this palette because I was madly in love with the Peanut Butter shade from the Semi-Sweet Chocolate Bar palette and I love that they expanded on that idea to make an entirely new product!
The warm shades in this palette, combined with the purples, really just make this palette for me. This is everything I could’ve hope for in a PB&J palette and I’m very seriously considering picking up a backup because it’s limited edition! (Sadly, the PB&J palette is only available in the USA via Ulta. I was lucky enough to have Shawna of Spill the Beauty order it and have it delivered to her US address!)
I have a Challenge Week coming up on Friday for this palette, but until then, you can check out my YouTube tutorial using it as well!
More Too Faced! I hadn’t purchased the Chocolate Melted Metallics because the Metallics have just never really been my thing (even in my recent review, I was pretty upfront about that), but I somehow ended up with all of the shades anyway! Katherine of The Green Bows, was super sweet and gave me two of the shades since she said she wasn’t inclined to wear brown shades anyway, the third shade I managed to snag in my gift bag at the Toronto Too Faced VIB Rouge event that Laura (of Lipstick and Laura) took me to. Talk about lucky!
This next one was also an unexpected gift from Katherine! She said she already had one of the Charlotte Tilbury‘s Wonder Glow and offered me a brand new unopened bottle of it. WOW! Charlotte Tilbury packaging kills me every. single. time.
The last item of the month is really just a replacement item since I’m close to finishing up my currently being used NYX Micro Brow in Taupe. NYX is now available in Shoppers Drug Mart, so I grabbed it when it was on sale. I’ve been overly lazy with my brows lately and while I prefer using a promade on them, this pencil is just soooo much faster for whacking on my eyebrows in the morning!
That’s it for this month! April should be… interesting, to say the least. I’m eagerly looking forward to IMATS New York as well as finally getting my hands on the Too FacedSweet Peach palette!
EDIT:
I got me that glorious Sweet Peach palette!
I’ve barely even touched it, but dang is it ever pretty!
Let’s start off with the only item I actually BOUGHT this month! Inglot‘s Duraline was a must have for me since my Inglot red gel liner turned gloppy on me. Duraline will soften up gel liners that have gone a little bit stale (or any other cream product). I’ve put off buying it for a while now, but when my red gel liner died, I knew it was time to invest. 🙂
So, that may have been the only item I bought this month, but I am very, very lucky to have a ton of beauty blogging friend in Toronto and we do swaps every few months. It gives me a chance to get rid of product that don’t work for me, and pick up ones that could potentially be love at first sight. So here’s the goodies I got from a swap:
I realize these are empty Inglot palettes, but I am SO excited for that! I love Inglot‘s system of palettes, and I think the packaging is beautiful, but it annoys me to buy packaging every time I go to buy shadows. Now I’ve got three empty palettes I can fill with beautiful colours!
I do not need shower gel. At all. And yet, I always grab for it when I see it at a swap. Why? Maybe because I always considered shower gel as so unnecessarily expensive in stores that I really don’t want to pay for it again any time soon. I love shower gel, and this smells wonderful, but it’s gone to the back of my “to use” pile of shower gels. I’m sure I’ll get to it… at some point. lol
One of my favourite YouTubers (StrwberrySweet – mostly does Project Pans) panned one of these Josie Maran Argan Infinity Creamy Lip & Cheek Oil relatively recently, and I wanted to see what they were all about. My initial reaction is that I’m not super keen on the scent of them, but that it wore well and looked good!
This Boscia Intensifying Moisture Pack + is sitting in my medicine cabinet and while I’m writing this up I realize I haven’t even got a clue as to whether this is a facial cleanser or a moisturizer. Heh.
I’ve harped on about my problems with eyeshadow primers before so I won’t bore you with the details other than to say I love trying new ones. Benefit‘s Air Patrol is adorable looking and I’m excited to see how this one holds up!
I love Aveeno‘s skincare products and I’ve been using them for the last… 14 years. Eek. Anyway, I haven’t tried out their Fresh Essentials range so I’m looking forward to using this one.
More shower gel! I got sucked in by the scent of Vitabath‘s Sweet Pink Peppermint – it’s more of a Christmasy scent, so I’ll probably bust it out in November.
MWAHAHAHAH!!!!! The Body Shop‘s Satsuma scent has been one of my favourite scents throughout my entire life and yet… my husband doesn’t like the scent of it. I haven’t repurchased it since I used my last big tub up of the body butter… but now I have another one. 😀
NYC‘s Liquid Liner has been touted as one of the best matte black liquid liners at the drugstore and I hadn’t gotten around to picking it up! Initial reaction: DEFINITELY matte, DEFINITELY black… but I’m not in love with the way the tip of the brush is cut. Hmmm… maybe I’ll just cut it myself.
No one wanted this Misslyn nail polish in 756… which was great for me since I wear this kind of silver disco polish on my toenails 24/7 so picked this one up since I’ve never tried a Misslyn polish before.
I know NOTHING about this B Kamins brand… but the body lotion says “Maple” on it. It, however, smells nothing like maple, so I was totally duped. 😐

I couldn’t believe someone brought this to the swap. I had lusted over this Galaxy Chic palette years ago when BH Cosmetics released it, but never bought it because like everything else in the makeup world… you become so inundated with products you end up buying some, and not others. The colours, the marbling, the names of the colours… everything about this palette makes me so, SO happy. I’ve used it twice now and love the shadows. Not a matte in sight though, so it’s not a standalone palette.
A new mascara for me to try out: The MaybellineLash Sensational. I’ve still got a lot of mascara left in my currently opened tubes, so it’ll be a while before I bust into this one.
I’m not too familiar with Etude House‘s makeup, so I was excited to see a few items by them. This is essentially one of those matte lipstick crayons. I like it, but I don’t love it.
Not tried this one yet… this is by Etude House as well and I think it’s just for lips.. but may be for cheeks as well. It’s still sitting in my “To Use” pile!
Oh wow. Okay… I had heard about Coloured Rained via NikkieTutorials on YouTube, but never bought any. BUT THIS IS AMAZING! IT’s nowhere near as drying as the Colour Pop liquid lipsticks – instead this one is so much more comfortable on me lips. I may need more…
Unfortunately, Clio‘s Lipnicure was a straight “into the garbage” item. It applied patchily and then just really poorly. To the point where I removed it mid-day at work and it was a disaster to remove. I threw it straight into the trash. 🙁
This one astonished me. Too Faced‘s Loganberry La Creme lipstick was discontinued about a year ago and I was never able to get my hands on it. Imagine my surprise that someone would want to get rid of it! YESSSS!
A face mask via THEFACESHOP. This’ll be my first time using anything by THEFACESHOP.
A brow kit from Annabelle that has turned out to be wayyy too dark for me, but it has worked when I need to darken up my eyebrows to look more like someone else (see my The 100 Wanheda/Clarke tutorial).
Another Annabelle brow product! Brow Show is light enough for me so this has actually been working out and it’s really easy to use. Not enjoying the huge size of the pencil, but the product is nice!
And we’re done! I’m doing pretty well conserving my money for IMATS New York, and these swaps are definitely helping me to keep products rotating in and out of my collection1
Monthly haul time! January’s haul is a bit of a mix of things – some items I received for Christmas from family members (but didn’t get a chance to photograph until January), as well as some birthday items (January baby here!). Enjoy!
I know little to nothing about this brand Chemins de Provence aside from the fact that my brother picked it up for me in France. These are bath salts and the scent is in Almond. I’ve used them once so far and loved the scent, although I definitely did not smell almonds. I’ve previously finished up lavender scented bath salts by the same brand, which you can see in my most recent Empties video.
Another present from my brother, and presumably from France as well since I’m totally unfamiliar with the brand. Fraise l’exquise de Energie Fruit is a shower gel that I’ve added to my collection but haven’t had the opportunity to use yet because I’m totally overwhelmed with all the shower gel I currently have in my linen closet, so this has essentially moved to the back of the lineup!
L’Occitane‘s Pamplemousse Rhubarbe (Grapefruit and Rhubarb) is a limited edition scent that my mom picked up for me in a shower gel (yep, into the closet it goes!) for Christmas. She knows I love anything grapefruit scented, and the rhubarb is a great addition to the scent!
Annnnd since she knows I love grapefruit so much, she also picked up a pack of Neutrogena grapefruit wipes for me. Made me laugh when I opened the package!
My mother in law gifted me this JergensWet Skin Moisturizer. I had heard about in-shower moisturizers (like the one by Nivea), but I had never tried them out. This one is slightly different in the sense that you apply it just after you’ve gotten out of the shower, but before you towel off. While it feels like a normal moisturizer, what’s cool to me is that unlike a normal moisturizer, this works with the moisture on your skin in order to hydrate your limbs. Usually if I apply a typical moisturizer to wet skin it slides right off – this one doesn’t! So after I’ve applied to my wet skin, I towel/pat myself try and I’m good to go. Really, really handy for quick moisturizing without having to worry about it needing to sink in for a lengthy period of time!
One of the cute things my mother in law put in my stocking (hi Ruth!) are these Burt’s Bees items; a lip balm and a cuticle cream. She had read in my stocking stuffer guide (prior to Christmas) that my grandmother would typically put a Burt’s Bees lipbalm in my stocking, so she decided to keep the tradition going since we were in Wisconsin this year and not in Ottawa! Very sweet touch. 🙂
Sooo here in Canada, I’ve never seen Chap Stick in these cool scents. I’d seen plenty of American bloggers and YouTubers mention them, but they never seemed to be available in Canada. I need lip balm like I need more shower gel (which is to say not at all!), but I wanted these because I just can’t find them here! The Pumpkin Pie one is incredible (so, so nice to wear that one) and the Candy Cane one is as to be expected – very candy cane-like. Currently wishing I’d also picked up the Cake Batter one as well, but I think it would’ve been a little too sweet for my tastes.
Alright, here’s a biggie! My mother in law gave me some cash for my birthday and encouraged me to hit up Ulta while we were visiting. I needed no convincing and I knew exactly what I was going to pick up – the LoracMega Pro 2.
I had died a small death by not getting the original Mega Pro (RIP) and have been wanting to try Lorac eyeshadows out since then. What better way to do that than with an ENORMOUS palette? (I’m seriously dreading Swatch Sunday for this sucker… that’s a LOT of photos to edit.) I’m so happy to have this palette in my collection now. 🙂
Another thing I picked up from Ulta is the Tree Hut Shea Sugar Scrub in the Brazilian Nut scent. I’ve actually already finished one of these before and I knew I wanted more of them. Out of all of their scrubs, this is definitely my favourite scent.
While we now have NYX stores in Toronto, I hadn’t been able to get out there yet, so I picked up the very last NYX Micro-Brow in Taupe at Ulta while I was there. Love, love, love this brow pencil – it’s so much easier to use when I’m in a rush than say a pomade or the like. (I still love those too, they’re just not a product I want to dip into when I need to do my makeup quickly.)
This was such an impulse purchase and I’m still a little dazed and confused by it. I was inside a Sephora at JC Penney (holy smokes they have a lot more amazing sets there!) and noticed they still had a few shades left from the US-exclusive Frozen Berries collection by Bite Beauty. I picked up the shade Juniper because it’s a stunning shade… but on further reflection I already have this shade in a few other lipsticks! It’s not dissimilar to Kir Royale (also by Bite) and Too FacedMelted Berry. Did I need another lipstick in the exact same shade? NO! But now I own it and I feel kind of silly about it.
A few products from a generous friend here. She was at the MAC Warehouse sale a few months back (I think) and picked up this Full Fuchsia pan blush for me because it was super bright and she figured I’d like it. And I do! Soo pretty!
A new Maybelline quad in Luminous Lilacs. This looks like new packaging for the quads (to me anyway, I’m not overly familiar with their eyeshadows except for the ones that used to come in a chevron pattern) and I have yet to bust open this one!
Next up is a trio of The Body Shop body butters in their tiny size. She gifted me this because it has a tiny Satsuma one in there (and she knew my husband wasn’t a fan – haha!). There’s also a Strawberry and Mango one in there as well.
The next two items are freaking AWESOME! She also gifted me The Body Shop‘s Frosted Cranberry Shimmer Lotion! I had a small bottle of it last year but had used the whole thing up. This stuff is MAGIC. I love the scent, and it actually deposits very fine silver shimmer onto your skin. It’s not for everyone, but I love glitter all day, every day, so this is so, so nice to wear because it makes my skin gleam.
In addition to the shimmer lotion, she also handed me the shimmer mist (also in Frosted Cranberry). This is more of a bodyspray with fine shimmer in it, but I find the shimmer particles are not as strong as the shimmer lotion. Love the packaging too – it’s like a snowglobe!
The next two items are from my lovely friend Kat (well… her real name is Sara, but I call her Kat). We do a gift exchange at Christmas and she freaking spoiled me this year! She knew I had been lusting over the Laura Geller baked sorbet blush in Guava (Laura Geller is impossible to find in Canada), and not only did she find it, but she also managed to score it in an amazing set that came with a face primer, lip gloss and mascara. Unfortunately, the sparkly clutch it came in started shedding glitter particles everywhere so it’s not especially usable. The blush though… incredible. I’m so, so in love with it.
The other thing she spoiled me on is the LoracUnzipped Gold palette. Kat had asked me what brands we didn’t have access to in Canada and Lorac was my first response since I didn’t have any of their palettes at the time she asked (of course then I went and bought the Mega Pro 2 above when I was in Wisconsin…).
The shades in this palette speak to me and I’ve heard Samantha Jane going on about it a lot so I knew it had to be mine!
Phew! That’s it for January! I’m sticking to a very minimal buying pattern for the next few months since I’m saving up for IMATS New York (Sugarpill EVERYTHING) in April. Luckily, I’ve also received a few Sephora gift cards so if I feel the need to splurge, I’ve got those in my back pocket! 😉
