Mary Kay Fall 2017 Color Collection (Review & Swatches)

Mary Kay Fall 2017 Color Collection

If you had asked me years ago if I would ever be interested in Mary Kay launches, I would’ve likely laughed you out of my apartment. But, hey, here we are! Mary Kay flies so much under the radar in the beauty community because it’s still pegged as such a grandma brand, but damnit, I’m trying to change that a little bit!

Mary Kay Fall 2017 Color Collection - nail polishes
Mary Kay Fall 2017 Color Collection – nail polishes

Let’s start with the nail polishes because they are hands down my FAVOURITE thing that Mary Kay makes. I won’t be swatching them for you (which is in your best interest, I promise – my nails look like I’ve been at war with them since the condo move), but if you’ve been keen enough to notice my nail polish in my YouTube videos over the last 8 months or so, you’ll have noticed that practically the only nail polish I wear anymore is by Mary Kay. These suckers are opaque in two coats, have a lovely cream finish and are overall amazing. Highly recommend.

New for the Fall 2017 limited edition collection are these Lip Suedes. They’ve only released two colours – Rose Blush and Mulberry Muse – but they’re pretty, if not somewhat conventional, colours.

These were absolutely LOVELY to wear. The colour glides on easily and smells wonderful (like vanilla). Coverage was opaque in two swipes. It goes on like a cream and eventually dries down to more of a matte finish. I liked that aspect because it made the lipstick last a heck of a lot longer than I was expecting. They’re also incredibly comfortable: I wore Mulberry Muse out for the evening last weekend, had multiple glasses of wine and there was very little fading. I also wore Rose Blush to work and didn’t even feel the need to remove it after five hours of wear which is completely unheard of for me (usually I get tired of having something on my lips).

  • Rose Blush is more of your everyday pink shade. I’m not typically keen on pinks, but this shade was very easy to wear and was something that would match a multitude of eye looks.
  • Mulberry Muse is way more up my alley! This kind of wine shade always comes back in style as the colder weather hits and I welcome it with open arms!

The last two items in this launch are eyeshadow quints. You can buy separate packaging to house these in, or you can slap them into one of your magnetized palettes since the back has a big ole magnet on it.

Mary Kay Fall 2017 Color Collection - eyeshadow quint in Simply Smoky
Mary Kay Fall 2017 Color Collection – eyeshadow quint in Simply Smoky
  • Simply Smoky will cover all your smoky eye needs… except for a cream brow bone shade which I feel is kind of vital. The far left shade is too grey/blue to be used on the brow bone, so keep that in mind!
Mary Kay Fall 2017 Color Collection - eyeshadow quint in Rose Nudes

  • A bit more cohesive, the Rose Nudes quint makes for a really lovely neutral eye with a pop of pink.

I went a little eighties with this look – smoky blue eyes with a wine-coloured lip.

I did like the way the Simply Smoky quint looked on the eyes, but as I said before, I had to pull in a brow bone shade from another palette to pull it all together.

More of a neutral look for this one – pink on pink!

Rosé Nudes was my favourite quint between the two. The colours blended onto my eye seamlessly and made for a really beautiful look. (Please disregard the horrible creasing foundation around my eyes – I have a scathing review coming up on that later on in the month.)

In short? Mary Kay makes some really, REALLY decent makeup products and I was quite impressed with the Fall launch. My picks are definitely the nail polishes, as well as the lip suedes.

Paul & Joe Beauté Make Up Collection 2017 (Review & Swatches)

Paul & Joe Beauté Make Up Collection 2017

And here we have it… my first holiday 2017 product review! And what better way to start off than with a combination of cats and makeup?!

Paul & Joe Beauté Make Up Collection 2017
Paul & Joe Beauté Make Up Collection 2017

Paul & Joe Beauté often use cats as inspiration for not only their packaging, but also their lipstick bullets (yes, really). This trio set, labelled as “Make Up Collection 2017 001” comes with a round makeup bag (made in China) and three products inside (all three made in Japan).

Paul & Joe Beauté Lipstick Limited 003
Paul & Joe Beauté Lipstick Limited 003

Hands down the cutest item is the Lipstick Limited 003 (I don’t get these names at all, but hey, that’s what it’s called). The packaging, as is typical for Paul & Joe, is hard cardboard and I believe the outer shell itself is reusable, so should you happen to finish the lipstick, you can buy a replacement bullet and slot it inside the tube.

LOOK AT THAT LITTLE CAT FACE!!!
LOOK AT THAT LITTLE CAT FACE!!!

However, it’s what on the inside that delighted me to no end. The lipstick has a sheer outer edge that is essentially a jelly balm filled with gold glitter particles whereas the inside core is a beautiful red that’s shaped like a cat’s face! How freaking ADORABLE is that? It actually pained me to use it the first time, but in the name of blogging I forced myself to do it.

The consistency of this lipstick is more like a balm and extremely juicy looking (swatches and face shots are below). I found this lipstick to be extremely comfortable to wear, although it did apply a little bit differently than how I normally wear lipstick. Because of the outer rim being translucent, it means the bulk of the product ends up on the inner rim of your lips – which is actually quite lovely since it creates a natural ombre fade.

Paul & Joe Beauté Eye Gloss S 001
Paul & Joe Beauté Eye Gloss S 001

Sooooo when you first look at this product… what do YOU think it is? Because I thought it was a lip gloss. So I plopped it on my lips one morning and was like “OH GOD THIS IS HORRIBLE WHY IS IT SO STREAKY AND GOOPY?”. Then I read the packaging and had a “you’re a total dumbass, Chelle” moment. This is actually an eye gloss and is really not supposed to go on my lips. Whoops. Of course, when I read “eye gloss” I also wasn’t that amped about the product either because my experience with eye glosses has never been positive. Labeled as “Eye Gloss S 001“, this one is a little bit different than ones I’ve tried in the past however – it’s not as viscous as the MAC eye glosses are (those are such an utter failure in my opinion) – this one has a thinner consistency and actually dries down relatively fast.

However… eye glosses, liquid shadows, cream shadows, etc., are really not my favourite kind of product. While I felt this added a little bit of sparkle to my eyelids, it’s not something I would reach for with any kind of consistency. It caused a little bit of creasing on my lid (very little though) and it had a tendency to lift the shadows I had applied underneath.

Paul & Joe Beauté Shimmering Blush 001
Paul & Joe Beauté Shimmering Blush 001

The last item in the makeup bag is Shimmering Blush 001. The compact is small and adorable AND it has a mirror. Sometimes brands skimp out on the mirror when the product is small, but thankfully not this time!

The blush is pink-leaning-peach with quite a bit of sheen to it. I opted to skip highlighter on days when I wore this just so I could see how well it actually lit up my face, and I have to say I was impressed. I’m a diehard for highlighter, but it’s not always necessary – ESPECIALLY when you’ve got a blush that can delivery some of that glow. Given the softness of the colour, I was expecting the blush to fade into oblivion throughout the day, but that wasn’t the case at all. It stayed true to its colour the entire length of the workday.

Paul & Joe Beauté Make Up Collection 2017 – swatches

These swatches should give you a better idea of how the products look:

  • The lipstick has an incredible balmy sheen to it, and you can see where the edges of the outer rim are just on the outsides of the swatch. The gold flecks you see in the tube are not reflected on the skin so you needn’t worry about glitter everywhere. I think they’re mostly for show in the bullet.
  • The eye gloss comes out as a pale champagne with a hint of rose. There are definitely specs of glitter in there and I’m afraid they did have a tendency to drop onto my cheeks throughout the day.
  • The blush does have hints of glitter in it in the swatch, but they were not visible on my cheeks at all. The entire cheek looks came across as more shimmery, but not glittery, and really, really pretty.
Wearing the whole collection
Wearing the whole collection

Hands down my favourite item in this bag was the lipstick. The colour is absolutely incredible and the fact that it feels like a balm is wonderful. It has no taste or scent, which is also great for those who are sensitive to scented products.

The shimmery blush was also a really nice surprise. It’s a beautiful colour and the longevity surprised me since I tend to find shades like this dull throughout the day.

My least favourite item in the makeup bag was the eye gloss, but that’s partially because I’m just not the kind of person who wears that type of product. In the shot above I’m wear it on the inner half of my lid.

Final Thoughts

The eye gloss is a pass for me, but the lipstick is incredible and so seasonally appropriate for the cooler months. It’s an easy to wear red that feels comfortable – what more could I need during the winter months? (Also, side note, I, for once, did not wear a lip primer with this product and noticed ZERO bleedout. Huzzah!) The blush is also so lovely and one of those easy to wear shades that I expect would look lovely on a wide range of skin tones. The makeup bag is also adorable, because hello… cats! (Even my husband commented on the packaging yesterday… he was like “wait… are those cats??”. When I confirmed they were, his immediate response was “this is the best kind of makeup bag”. haha!)

The Paul & Joe Beauté Make Up Collection 2017 is limited edition for the holidays and you’ll have to wait a little bit to get your hands on it because it won’t be available until November! (I had no idea as I started this review that that was the case, so I’m really sorry that you’re going to have to wait to get your hands on it!) It retails for $64 CAD and will be available online at beautyboutique.ca or in stores at select Shoppers Drug Marts.

tarte Tarteist Clay Paint Liner (Review & Swatches)

tarte Tarteist Clay Paint Liner

This product isn’t new, but it’s something I had been meaning to try out ever since it was released several years ago. The tarte Tarteist Clay Paint Liner is a very interesting hybrid product to me: it’s got a squeezy tube like a lip gloss, it’s a gel liner (but not quite) and it’s got some kind of well-shaped contraption at the top of it!

tarte Tarteist Clay Paint Liner

In its essence, the Tarteist Clay Paint Liner is a “waterproof cream eyeliner with a unique blending tip that is inspired by an artist’s palette”. They say cream, but I feel like it’s less viscous than that. It’s like a thicker liquid – and I would never mistake this to be a gel texture either. It’s not so liquid that it runs and spills everywhere though – more like it’s got enough thickness so that it holds in place in that well area at the tip.

The well, in my opinion, is a genius idea. While I have traditionally liked gel pots (and really loved the tarte gel liner as well), I find that you often struggle with getting the right amount of product on your brush while also shaping the brush into my preferred flattened edge so I can get a crisp line on my lid. The well tip helps me flatten out my brush without disrupting anymore product (like I would in a pot) and I can vary just how much I get on my brush by wiping it on a clean edge.

Rather conveniently, the Tarteist Clay Paint Liner comes with a mini angled liner brush inside the packaging. I wasn’t expecting that at all since I didn’t think the product packaging was big enough to hold a brush! So that was a nice surprise… however I’m not personally a fan of angled liner brushes, so I did resort to using one of my own straight ones for application.

Swatched out you can see how the product is drying to a matte finish (it’s a bit glossy at the top where the thicker blobs are still drying). THIS IS SUCH A RELIEF FOR ME! I prefer matte black liners above anything else and I’ve been continuously annoyed that I can’t seem to find matte black waterproof liners (I’ve yet to find a gel liner that is truly waterproof). While I’d prefer this texture and feel in a pen style brush tip liner, this is the next best thing and I am so, SO happy by how matte it gets.

tarte Tarteist Clay Paint Liner - winged liner
tarte Tarteist Clay Paint Liner – winged liner

On the eye, the Tarteist Clay Paint Liner is as deep and black as I could ever need! It doesn’t go watery on me, which means I get a solid line in one swipe. I also didn’t initially realize this was waterproof and was quite surprised at work one day when my eye watered and I pressed a tissue to the corner of my eye. Usually I get some liner peeling off my eye and onto the tissue – not the case this time! My liner stayed fully intact on my face and had zero transfer. Although I’ve not tested it by dunking my head in water to test the true waterproofness of the product, all I personally really need is something that will hold up to my eyes watering, and this did it!

Final Thoughts

Suffice to say – I’m a fan. The tarte Tarteist Clay Paint Liner is a wonderfully matte black waterproof formula that is easy to apply. If you’re a fan of gel liners (or any type of potted liner that requires a brush) I think you’ll be a fan of this one. I had no fading throughout my work day and it actually didn’t pick up a ton of my shimmery lid shade either (which can sometimes be a problem for me with hooded lids).

The tarte Tarteist Clay Paint Liner can be purchased at sephora.ca for $29 CAD and on sephora.com for $24 USD.

IT Cosmetics Your Most Beautiful You – Live Love Laugh (Review & Swatches)

IT Cosmetics - Your Most Beautiful You Anti-Aging Face Palette - Live, Love, Laugh

Canadians! The wait is ALMOST over! IT Cosmetics is going to be launching in Canada in August! I have no exact date so far, but I attended a launch event here in downtown Toronto in June and they said that August was when it was all happening! I’ll keep you posted on an actual launch date, so stay tuned to my Twitter!

With the IT Cosmetics pre-launch event, we were sent home with some items to try and the first thing that caught my eye was this massive disc of product I had only ever experienced vicariously through US vloggers’ YouTube videos. Finally my time had come! I now owned the (just wait for this lengthy product name): Your Most Beautiful Your Anti-Aging Matte Bronzer, Radiance Luminizer & Brightening Blush Palette. It’s also branded with Live, Love, Laugh, which I think is a little bit of an easier format in which to refer to this product.

Anyway, just like its name, the Live, Love, Laugh compact comes with a whopping 22.22 grams of product. The bronzer is 11 grams, which is more than your average bronzer compact and each of the other two products have over 5.5 grams. I wish I had taken a photo of my hand over the product for scale, but please just trust me when I say this thing is ENORMOUS!

The way the product is laid out is really appealing (to me anyway!) and the mirror inside the compact is also jumbo sized which is so handy for daily use, or travel. The product itself is talc free and contains anti-aging hydrolyzed collagen, silk and peptides.

Swatched out, you can see how vivid the colours are on the skin. The blush and bronzer shades are slightly powdery (this isn’t a negative to me, but worth noting for those who care) and EXTREMELY pigmented. This is the kind of product where you’re going to want to whack your brush off first instead of going straight from the pan to your face! The highlighter is equally gorgeous and illuminating, but it’s not one of those super reflective highlighters we’ve seen on the market lately. It’s gorgeous, don’t get me wrong, but it’s more of a “lit from within” look as opposed to “hello my name is disco ball”.

On the face, this compact is everything I need and want in a bronzer and blush. The tones are extremely complementary and blend beautifully.

As previously noted, the highlighter isn’t SUPER reflective, but it’s still incredibly gorgeous and the it pairs well with the bronzer and highlighter. (Sidenote: the highlighter IS more reflective than my picture above is showing – I just didn’t capture it very well on camera.)

Final Thoughts

In summary? I love this enormous compact so, so much. It seems everyone was raving about it on YouTube for good reason! The IT Cosmetics Your Most Beautiful Your Anti-Aging Matte Bronzer, Radiance Luminizer & Brightening Blush Palette may have the longest product name I have ever encountered in makeup, but it is 100% worth the hype!

So far, this compact can only be purchased on Ulta.com for $38 USD but it will be available in Canada shortly!
