Annabelle Big Show Lacquers

Available since January 2016, the  Annabelle Big Show Lacquers bring a sense of vibrancy to the winter months!

Annabelle Big Show Lacquers

The Big Show Lacquers have:

  • High-impact staining pigments
  • Mirror-like shine and lightweight colour
  • Non-sticky
  • Comfortable and non-drying, stay-put finish
  • Fruity scent

The doefoot applicator is standard fare for products like this. It deposits colour evenly all over the lip, but you will need to dip in a few times to completely cover your lips.

Although there are six shades in the range, they do veer quite bright. The colour payoff in each one is quite opaque, so you’re definitely getting a mouthful of colour!

Here’s the full range as a lip swatch followed by a full face shot:

Final Thoughts

The Annabelle Big Show Lacquers are smooth, comfortable to wear formula. I found the pigmentation was stellar across the board (none of these colours were patchy at all!) and the vibrancy of the shades is pretty dang fantastic. Since they’re a lacquer, they will stay fairly emollient on your lips. I found I had to reapply every 90 minutes or so to keep the glossiness at full peak. You could wear them for longer without reapplication, but I just liked to keep my lips looks as great as they did when I first applied it.

I didn’t use a primer or lip liner with these, so I did experience minimal lip line bleed out. (That’s not make it or break it for me in this formula though, I have that problem with any lip product without some kind of primer.) If you’re going for a glossy, comfortable to wear lip product, you absolutely cannot go wrong with these!

Too Faced Love Flush Blush Wardrobe (Review, Swatches & Comparison)

Too Faced Love Flush Blush Wardrobe

Choosing between what shade of blush to buy can be hard… so I have to love the fact that Too Faced released a six-pan of ALL of their Love Flush blushes!

And really, I can’t get over the ridiculously cute packaging. (But let’s be honest, Too Faced always slays their packaging!) As warning though, this palette is LONG – it’s way longer than the average makeup palette so you may be a little surprised when you first see it in person!

I love that the palette is compact and sleek and even comes with a slice of mirror in the lid. It closes with a magnet that seems fairly solid.

Each section of the palette is colour coded to match the shade of the blush, although you may notice some slight discrepancies between the printed shade and the colour of the pan. Doesn’t matter though – it gives you a darn good idea what shade you’re going to be reaching for! The Love Flush blushes claim to have blendable, budgeproof, high-impact colour that will last 16 hours – I didn’t wear them that long, but the shades looked just as strong as when I put them on as they did after a 10 hour work day!

Let’s get into the swatches:

All swatches above are done on bare skin and because this was photographed under artificial light, I built up the colours a bit. You will notice, however, that at no point do the shades look totally overboard. I really appreciate the fact that while the Too Faced blushes are pigmented, they’re not SO pigmented that you have to be overly careful about how you apply them to your cheeks.

Final Thoughts

If you’re like me, and hadn’t gotten around to buying any (or all) of the Too Faced Love Flush blushes, I think you’ll love this limited edition palette. The price point is excellent considering you get to try all six of their new blushes (each blushes contains 2 grams/0.07 ounces, which is more than your average eyeshadow). Pigmentation was smooth and relatively even across the board (Your Love Is King looks a bit patchy in the swatch, but it didn’t wear like that or look patchy on my face). I love having every single shade in a convenient palette, so this is seriously absolutely ideal for a heavyweight makeup collector or even a makeup novice that wants to try a few shades out without dumping all kinds of money on full sized products.

The Too Faced Love Flush Blush Wardrobe is a limited edition product (get it while you can!!) and can be purchased on sephora.ca for $45 CAD or on sephora.com for $36 USD.

Maybelline Dream Velvet Foundation (Review + Swatches)

Maybelline Dream Velvet foundation in shades 10 Porcelain Ivory and 15 Ivory

New in the foundation department by Maybelline is their Dream Velvet formula and it promises:

  • Hydrated skin. Matte finish. Flawless face.
  • Turning heads, bringing your A-game, the #nofilter selfie.
  • Putting your best face forward.

The Maybelline Dream Velvet foundation comes in 12 shades ranging from 05 Warm Porcelain to 95 Coconut – although the shades definitely skew more to the paler side of things. You get the usual fluid ounce of product in a squeeze tube that comes with a nozzle tip (and there’s even a little foil seal on it when you first purchase it so you know it’s not been tampered with). The packaging is slim, compact and sleek. The tube is easy to squeeze and it’s easy to get product out of this tube since the plastic is soft and pliable (something I highly appreciate). The product itself is like a thick, whipped mousse but it spreads and blends easily on the face.

The one thing that really set me back in trying this foundation though was the colours. If you take a look at the swatches above, you’ll notice that 15 Ivory is really quite dark and is more attuned to my skin tone in the summer. However, even the shade 10 Porcelain Ivory is still quite dark and VERY warm compared to my skin tone. In fact, it looks downright peachy. I put off trying this foundation for a week because I was scared it would not match my face and I’d be left looking like a fool at work.

I was TOTALLY wrong:

Comparison between no foundation and shade 10 Porcelain Ivory
Comparison between no foundation and shade 10 Porcelain Ivory

That’s how 10 Porcelain Ivory looks on my skin! It’s a FLAWLESS match in my book *and* it even matches my neck! I have no idea what the heck is in this foundation to cause it to colour match like that, but the shade is bang on and I couldn’t be happier. Given how odd the original swatch looked on the underside of my arm… I’m kind of astounded. I don’t know how you did it Maybelline – but you did, and it’s awesome!

Final Thoughts

I’m in LOVE with this new Dream Velvet foundation! Aside from my initial scare with the colour matching, this product has seriously zero faults. (For reference, my skin is fairly dry right now.) I get a full day’s wear out of it (around 10 hours). I have no creasing or sinking into fine lines (usually an issue on my forehead because I raise my eyebrows a lot). It feels soft and velvety to the touch. It doesn’t make my face itchy. It doesn’t go patchy or peel anywhere. The coverage is truly flawless and it was a breeze applying it to my face since it requires very little blending to get it to sink in (I use a Real Techniques sponge). I love the squeeze tube and the compact size. In short, I cannot believe how amazing this foundation is! I really don’t have any faults for how this foundation wore on my skin or looked. /bows down before Maybelline

The Maybelline Dream Velvet foundation can be purchased for ~$16.99 CAD in stores, or at Ulta.com for $10.99 USD.

Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid (Review & Swatches)

Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid

Doesn’t the packaging and colours of the new Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquids take your breath away? I kind of see this launch as an extension of the Vivid lipstick launch (what was that… four years ago? Eek!) and I LOVED that launch so, so much.

Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid
Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid

So the new Vivid Matte Liquids are essentially a lipstick with a “creamy liquid base that creates a soft, cushiony feel that glides on smooth to a matte finish”. But… they’re not actually matte. And they don’t dry matte. The only way to get them to turn matte is to actually blot them down with a tissue.

Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid - applicator
Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid – applicator

This isn’t going to be a terribly positive review, so please let me start out with what I DO love about the Vivid Mattes before I get into all of my negatives. Number one is the applicator. This thing is pure gold for applying lip colour. It’s long and slanted and because of its length, it does a phenomenal job of creating straight lines as you apply colour (drag the edges across your lips in one smooth motion). I’m fairly terrible at applying lip colour without causing skipping and this completely stopped that from happening. Love!

The other aspect I’m in love with is the colour range. They have some neutrals, but I was drawn to the bold, vibrant shades. The colours above are just BEAUTIFUL!.

Rebel Red is a lot of fun and this one applied the most consistently.

Berry Boost was the best shade to blot down to create a matte texture.

Wearing Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid in Vivid Violet
Wearing Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid in Vivid Violet

Vivid Violet was fairly patchy, but there’s no denying that colour impact.

However… like I said… this isn’t going to be a positive review. So let’s dissect why:

  • The formula actually creates a numbing sensation on my lips. And we’re not talking “plumping” either. It’s like I applied Orajel on my lips – they feel NUMB! The sensation does disappear after about an hour, but it’s not a comfortable feeling. (And I’m definitely not the only person that’s noticed this.)
  • The scent on these is very unpleasant to me. I like the scent of the Maybelline Vivid lipsticks (although I don’t really know how to describe it… slightly sweet?), but these smell nothing like those. This has a wickedly strong floral/old lady/potpourri scent that lingered the entire time I wore these. DO NOT WANT.
  • These aren’t matte, and so, matte should not appear in the name. You can blot them down so that they become matte, but you lose a lot of the pigmentation that way.
  • The formula moves around on my lips. Even with lip primer and invisible lip liner, these still bled outside my lip lines and (worse) started to smear on the outside corners of my mouth. (Think fruit punch mouth.) This required constant maintenance and I was eternally worried that I looked like I had no idea how to apply lipstick.
  • There’s inconsistencies in the formula: Rebel Red was the smoothest to wear, Vivid Violet was fairly patchy, and Berry Boost wore best when blotted with a tissue.

Thoughts on how you can possibly make these work:

  • I only wore the bright shades, maybe the lighter ones are less obvious to smear/move around?
  • I didn’t try this, but I imagine a lip liner in the same colour as the Vivid Matte would help control the product.
  • …and that’s all I’ve got.

Final Thoughts

I’m so sorry to say that I really can’t with this product. It smells bad, it numbs my lips (like what??? No Maybelline product has ever done that to me!) and it  won’t stay put without leaking out the sides of my lips. I know this is a very strong “NO” review, but it’s not like it’s fun to come down so harshly on products – and I really, REALLY wanted to love these. I love Maybelline as a brand, and I still love and use many of their products (like seriously, go look at the epic-ness of their new eye primer) but this was just a total miss for me. 🙁

Smashbox Be Legendary Lipsticks (Review & Swatches)

Smashbox Be Legendary Lipsticks in Infrared Matte and Famous

Sometimes you try a new lip product and you wonder how the heck you were missing out on something so amazing all along. This is one of those times.

Smashbox Be Legendary Lipsticks in Infrared Matte and Famous
Smashbox Be Legendary Lipsticks in Infrared Matte and Famous

Smashbox recently added new shades to their Be Legendary lipstick line. They come in two types of formula:

  • CREAM: Get show-stopping colour with a lustrous finish from this rich cream formula. Enriched with shea butter, the vibrant lipstick hydrates deep into lips for lasting moisture throughout the day, while added Vitamins C and E add a boost of antioxidants to protect and perfect.
  • MATTE: Master the matte lip trend with this silky hybrid formula. The vivid colour glides on smooth, with added adherence power to help the lipstick stay in place all day. Plus, each sultray shade added Vitamins C and E for saturated colour that never dries out your lips.

Since this is my first time experiencing Smashbox Be Legendary lipsticks, I was pleased to see how solid the packaging and bullet felt. The sleek rectangular case for the lipstick is hefty and expensive looking. The bullet of the lipstick itself is wonderfully firm – this is something I always look for since I have a nasty habit of snapping lipsticks in half.

Smashbox Be Legendary Lipsticks in Infrared Matte and Famous

But don’t let a firm bullet mistake you… these lipsticks are easy to apply and they really do glide on smoothly.

Matte shades are generally my preference for lipsticks, and Infrared Matte did not disappoint. It glides on seamlessly and is excessively comfortable to wear, especially since it’s a matte. I wore it for about five hours and noticed no difference between when I applied it and when I took it off five hours later. That’s impressive!

Although I love my mattes, the Famous (cream) shade equally impressed me. It’s a soft, creamy lipstick with a sheen. What impressed me the most about this lipstick is that there’s a bit of tacky-ness to the formula that actually helped the lipstick adhere to my lips. I know that sounds… not pleasant, but work with me on this one. Usually when I wear a nude cream lipstick, it disappears in about two hours. This one did not! Famous stayed on my lips for over four hours (I took it off at that point cuz I was removing my makeup) and still looked just as good as ever. I really, really appreciated the consistency of the lipstick because it worked for me.

Infrared Matte has quickly become one of my favourite reds… and it may actually bump MAC’s Russian Red out of first place. /gasp

Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick in Famous

Famous is a nude-pink cream that looks a bit more peach in the tube. Super impressive formula on this one.

Final Thoughts

Well Smashbox, you’ve done it again. First you impressed me with your Insta-Matte a few weeks ago, now you’ve taken my breath away with your lipsticks. Pigmentation is incredible, wear time is excellent and they feel fantastic on the lips. I wish I’d paid more attention to Smashbox lip products before because the Be Legendary lipsticks have blown me out of the water. If you’re looking for a comfortable lipstick to wear on the daily, I’d put this near the top of my recommended formulas.

The Smashbox Be Legendary lipsticks can be purchased on sephora.ca for $23 CAD and on sephora.com for $21 USD.
