Makeup Geek Duochromes (Full Collection – Swatches, Review & Looks)

Makeup Geek Duochromes

Oh man. I have been lusting and lusting over the Makeup Geek duochromes since they first launched  back in September. At the time, I couldn’t justify the cost of the whole collection, but come December I was back in a position to purchase ALL OF THEM.  I picked up the entire duochrome set in a packaged bundle for $150 USD. That set comes with all twelve duochrome shadows and all eight duochrome pigments. As I’m typing this, the set is currently out of stock, but it’s expected to be back in stock in early February.

Sidenote: If you’re ever wondering WHEN something will be back in stock at Makeup Geek, always be sure to check their spreadsheet here. They’ve had it for years and it’s continuously updated.

Makeup Geek Duochrome Eyeshadows
Makeup Geek Duochrome Eyeshadows

The duochrome eyeshadow singles are packaged in the usual single pan packaging (no case for these guys yet, so you’ll need a Z-palette).

Makeup Geek Duochrome Pigments
Makeup Geek Duochrome Pigments

The pigments come in the same original containers as the MUG pigments, but they’ve had an updated lid and logo design that is much more appealing than its earlier incarntion.

As we get into the shades, please keep in mind that since these shadows reflect multiple colours, sometimes a camera cannot capture each shade. At the bottom of all of the swatches are out of focus shots that I’ve taken in an attempt to show you the dimension of each shade.

Makeup Geek Duochrome Eyeshadow Swatches

Makeup Geek - Blacklight
Makeup Geek – Blacklight

Blacklight is a purple with teal reflect. This is an incredible shade to use with a black base since it will do a lot to change the colour of the shadow.

Makeup Geek - Phantom
Makeup Geek – Phantom

Phantom is a white shadow with a purple reflect. I find this very similar to MAC’s Vellum, although the texture on the Makeup Geek shadow is a million times better. I’ve had several pans of Vellum over the years and it ALWAYS develops crusty hardpan. (Very annoying!) I’m so pleased Phantom doesn’t do that!

Makeup Geek - Karma
Makeup Geek – Karma

Karma is an orangey-gold with green reflects.

Makeup Geek - Voltage
Makeup Geek – Voltage

Voltage is a colour I am so, SO FREAKING HAPPY TO HAVE. I had an old MAC duo that was very similar to this shade and I’ve never ever found a dupe for it (was the light white/gold shade from the Illusionary/Burning Ambition duo).

Makeup Geek - Steampunk
Makeup Geek – Steampunk

Steampunk is another unique shade I wasn’t expecting to see and it’s jawdropping. It’s a black base with a bronze reflect. And it’s EXACTLY what I would expect a shadow called “Steampunk” to look like.

Makeup Geek - Havoc
Makeup Geek – Havoc

Havoc, to me, is your basic MAC Club. It’s an orangey-brown base with some teal reflect.

Makeup Geek - Typhoon
Makeup Geek – Typhoon

Typhoon is another one that took me by surprise. It looks pretty, you know.. green in the pan. Even perhaps a pale green. However, once you swatch it, the colour actually DEEPENS (sayyyyy what?) and it develops this gorgeous teal with gold and green reflect. Insanity.

Makeup Geek - Secret Garden
Makeup Geek – Secret Garden

Another stunner! Secret Garden also deepends up once you apply it. It’s a dark brown base with sharp green reflect. This is the perfect shade if you only want to wear one colour on your eye – it’ll be dark green on the lid and smudge out to a brown in the crease.

Makeup Geek - Ritzy
Makeup Geek – Ritzy

Ritzy has a reddish brown base with gold reflects.

Makeup Geek - Mai Tai
Makeup Geek – Mai Tai

Mai Tai is a peach shade with a subtle lilac reflect.

Makeup Geek - I'm Peachless
Makeup Geek – I’m Peachless

I’m Peachless is a champagne with peach-pink reflects. Stunning on the lid and on the inner corner.

Makeup Geek - Rockstar
Makeup Geek – Rockstar

The already existing shade (although now added to the duochrome lineup) is Rockstar, a dull silver with purple and pink reflects. I find this very, very similar to MAC’s Vex.

Makeup Geek Duochrome Pigment Swatches

Makeup Geek - Wildfire
Makeup Geek – Wildfire

Wildfire is a red-coral with gold reflects. STUNNING.

Makeup Geek - Sugar Rush
Makeup Geek – Sugar Rush

Sugar Rush is a white with a teal reflect. The shot above does nothing to do it justice. Scroll down to see the out of focus shot and you’ll see more of the teal coming out.

Makeup Geek - Chameleon
Makeup Geek – Chameleon

Chameleon is kind of cool in the pot – it looks blue and silver, but as soon as you swatch it it goes teal with gold reflects.

Makeup Geek - Insomnia
Makeup Geek – Insomnia

Insomnia is an existing shade for MUG, but I didn’t own it before (so I was happy to have it in this set). It’s a red-brown with blue reflects (also similar to MAC’s Club).

Makeup Geek - Kaleidoscope
Makeup Geek – Kaleidoscope

I cannot photograph Kaleidoscope to save my life. It’s a medium silver with pink, purple and teal reflects that are very visible in person.

Makeup Geek - Prism
Makeup Geek – Prism

Prism is another one of those icy white shades with a peachy-pink reflect.

Makeup Geek - Mood Ring
Makeup Geek – Mood Ring

Mood Ring is a pale grey with lavender reflects.

Makeup Geek - Hologram
Makeup Geek – Hologram

Hologram is a favourite of mine – while the base is quite orange, you get a LOT of gold punch to it on the lid.

Makeup Geek Duochome Pigments - out of focus
Makeup Geek Duochome Pigments – out of focus

See how the colours on the right side of the swatch stand out more when they’re out of focus? So, SO pretty.

Packaging broken from inserted sifter
Packaging broken from inserted sifter

A note on the packaging: My pigments did not come with the sifters inside the jar and instead were in a separate baggie inside my order. Since I knew about the problem of the sifters breaking the jars, I decided to only try it on one of my pigments. As soon as I applied the sifter, it cracked the side of the lid around the screwtop. My husband pulled the top off for me, and I just decided to leave all the pigments as is without slotting in the sifters. Sure, they’re a bit messy, but pigments usually are. Applying the sifter isn’t worth it to me if it’ll crack the jars. Additionally, having the sifter on actually made it difficult to screw the tops closed (without the sifter on, it it glides through the grooves seamlessly.).

Lid of pigments
Lid of pigments

As you can see from the shot above, the lid of the pigments are suited to having the sifters on (the circle sticks out and slots into the hole in the sifter). I’m hoping they fix the packaging in the future so that that sifters don’t crack the jars, but until then it’s definitely not a deal breaker for me: I love the pigments and will continue to use them without the sifters.

Makeup Geek Duochrome Looks

Here’s a few looks I cooked up using some of the pigments:

Pressing The Pigments

I know some people don’t like the mess of pigments, so I decided to press Kaleidoscope to see how it would turn out (plus I wanted to send it to a friend). For a tutorial on how to press pigments, check out this post.

Kaleidoscope as a pressed eyeshadow

It definitely works, and the swatch ends up looking rather similar:

Kaleidoscope swatches: loose and pressed
Kaleidoscope swatches: loose and pressed

If anything, it’s a bit softer of a colour when it’s been pressed and then swatched, but the different colours are present when you tilt the shadow towards the light. (I know you can’t see it in the swatch, which is a shame, because Kaleidoscope is so utterly unique!)

Final Thoughts

These are PHENOMENAL. They are so much fun to use and play with. Since the duochromes have multi-coloured shifts, you can mix and match with other eyeshadows you have to pull out more colour as you wish. For example, to pull out the red tones in Hologram in my eye shot above, I used some darker red/orange shades. You can also use different bases to augment different shades in the pigment (try playing around with it!).

My personal favourites eyeshadow shades are Blacklight, I’m Peachless, Phantom and Secret Garden. For the pigments, I love Hologram, Wildfire, Sugar Rush and Prism. They’re all good though, and the pigmentation as amazing as every other Makeup Geek shadow I’ve tried! If you REALLY want to see the multi-faceted shades in one of these, next time you place a MUG order, pick up the Kaleidoscope pigment. I actually gasped when I swatched that one!

So if you couldn’t tell, as per usual, these are total winners from the Makeup Geek brand. The duochrome eyeshadows are the same $6 USD price tag you’re used to from MUG, although the pigments will set you back $12 USD each. If you get some, tell me about your experiences with the shades!

Swatch Sunday: Makeup Revolution Redemption Palette Acid Brights

Makeup Revolution Redemption Palette Acid Brights

Despite my scathing comments on the Makeup Revolution palette I swatched last week (see that here), this palette is actually a lot better on the pigmentation side of things. Once again, this is a direct shade rip off of the Sleek Acid palette, however, the Redemption Palette Acid Brights actually does have enough pigmentation to make this palette worthwhile. (Personally though, I’d just buy the Sleek palette instead.)

MAC Flamingo Park (Review, Swatches & Looks)

MAC Flamingo Park

Launching in North America on February 4, 2016 at all MAC locations (internationally in March 2016), the MAC Flamingo Park collection is nothing to squawk at.

(Too much?)

Let’s get real. I saw this collection had freaking flamingos, corals and reds and I fell in love with it. I mean, how could you not, when the promo image looks like this:

MAC Flamingo Park
MAC Flamingo Park

Um yep. SOLD.

Let’s dive into some of the products, shall we? (Products first, full face shots follow. For a full list of products available in this collection, please visit Swatch & Review.)

MAC - Flamingo Park - Life's A Picnic ($26 CAD/$22 USD)
MAC – Flamingo Park – Life’s A Picnic ($26 CAD/$22 USD)

The first stunner of the collection is a pinky-coral-red that set my heart on fire. This is the kind of shade that I gasp over and want multiples of. I have this shade in blushes, in lipsticks, and I can never, ever get enough of it. Life’s A Picnic is a satin blush that can be applied intensely for those looking for a strong cheek colour. Or, apply it gently for a vibrant flush of colour.

MAC – Flamingo Park – Life’s A Picnic ($26 CAD/$22 USD)

This may be a spring collection, but Life’s A Picnic is the kind of shade that I want to wear RIGHT NOW. It gives me that wintry “came in from the cold” look that I love so, so much.

MAC - Flamingo Park - Nice To Meet You ($20 CAD/$17 USD)
MAC – Flamingo Park – Nice To Meet You ($20 CAD/$17 USD)

Next up is Nice To Meet You, an intense deep pink-red lipstick with a cremesheen finish. As is usual of cremesheens, this glides onto my lips with intense pigmentation and shine. The shine holds up for several hours (as if you’d applied a gloss over top of your lipstick) and the pigmentation is vibrant and wonderful.

MAC - Flamingo Park - Nice To Meet You ($20 CAD/$17 USD)
MAC – Flamingo Park – Nice To Meet You ($20 CAD/$17 USD)

Sidenote: I’m someone who needs to apply lip primer before I wear *any* lipstick as I’m prone to lip line bleedout. I’m especially susceptible to that with cremesheens since this formula has more slip to it. I always, always, always use MAC‘s Prep + Prime for lips (they’ve been in my Empties posts since I first started this blog!) and it keeps everything in place. Just a word to the wise for those of you who suffer with the same problems I do!

MAC - Flamingo Park - Sweet Tooth ($24 CAD/$20 USD)
MAC – Flamingo Park – Sweet Tooth ($24 CAD/$20 USD)

The cremesheen glass I have is Sweet Tooth, a warm mid-tone pink. This is the kind of shade that almost everyone I know loves to wear because it’s not only flattering, but it’s also really easy to wear. You can apply this on the fly and not really worry about it. It wears well on the lips and it’ll also wear off nicely (no nasty lip line, etc.). And also… I personally feel kind of awkward in true pink lip colours (I find them too girly), but I really, really liked how this looked on me, which is always a pleasant surprise!

MAC - Flamingo Park - Golden Olive and Tan pigments ($26 CAD/$22 USD)
MAC – Flamingo Park – Golden Olive and Tan pigments ($26 CAD/$22 USD)

Rounding out the collection are some permanent pigments: Golden Olive (frost) and Tan (frost). I’ve used MAC pigments again and again over the years and they never fault me. I even press them so I can have a solid eyeshadow!

MAC - Flamingo Park swatches: Golden Olive & Tan

Golden Olive has been a staple in my collection for years: It’s a green pigment with golden sheen that does wonders on the eyelids. Tan, although new to me, has been around for years and is well loved by the beauty blogging world. Tan is a shade that most people feel comfortable wearing because it’s a soft bronze with a pink sheen.

For the eyes, I applied Tan pigment all over the lid with MAC‘s Handwritten on the outer half of the lid and through the crease. Blanc Type is on my brow bone to highlight. The only shadow on my lower lash line is Golden Olive pigment.

Final Thoughts

MAC‘s Flamingo Park collection intrigued me with its colours and then suckered me in completely with the quality and pigmentation of the shades. Although there are some permanent products in the mix (and let’s be honest, MAC‘s permanent products are often overlooked, but they are always excellent), the real standouts for me are the Life’s A Picnic blush (that red-pink is to die for) and the Sweet Tooth cremesheen glass which took me by surprise. I’m currently eyeing the lipstick that’s available online only called The Fashion Flock because it’s a pink-coral matte shade and I’m allllll about that life! The lipstick I received is gorgeous, but I’m more of a lover of mattes in the lipstick world (but to each their own!). And, as always, the pigments are amazing, but since they’re permanent, you can get them any time!

So what are you eyeballing? What about Flamingo Park has caught your attention?

The products featured in this post were provided for consideration.

Wearing The Pattern Down

Wearing The Pattern Down

This post is nothing more than an appreciation for embossed products – ones I’ve loved enough to wear down the gorgeous pattern that’s been imprinted on it. Enjoy!

Physicians Formula Bronze Booster
Physicians Formula Bronze Booster

Let’s start this post off with one of the more infuriating products I’ve had the pleasure of working with; the Physicians Formula Bronze Booster was in my Use Up 2014 project… and as you can see I clearly did not finish it up (or even hit pan!). The only thing I managed to do was dust away the sun emblem that used to appear in the very middle. I became so enraged with my lack of progress on this bronzer that I really don’t think I touched it at all in 2015. Damn thing hurt my feelings! 😉

MAC Sea Me, Hear Me
MAC Sea Me, Hear Me

With the infuriating product out of the way, let’s talk about something I love immensely. My MAC Sea Me, Hear Me blush is one I’ve reached for continuously since I bought it in 2014 (I even mentioned it in my 2015 Favourites video). I seem to have been focusing on wiping out the curve of the wave as well as the repeated MAC logo on the upper half.

MAC Whisper of Gilt
MAC Whisper of Gilt

Another stunner from MAC – the highgly coveted Whisper of Gilt. I purchased this when it was repromoted and it’s been my go-to highlighter when I want a gold shade. Unlike the blush above that has the same pattern, this one seems to flake off in odd chunks. It never looks that way on the skin, but it’s certainly left behind a mottled pattern!

Make Up For Ever Pro Sculpting Duo #1
Make Up For Ever Pro Sculpting Duo #1

Although the bronzing side from this Make Up For Ever Pro Sculpting Duo (#1) hasn’t been touched much, I can’t say the same for the highlighter! The iridescent pinky-beige highligter is unbelievably epic. Since it can lean quite pink, I tend to reserve it for days  where it’ll work with my makeup, but that definitely doesn’t mean it gets neglected in my collection! I’ve swiped clean the center of the upraised bumps and I’m sure I’ll have the whole thing cleared off by the end of the year. (Full review on the Pro Sculpting Duo right here.)

Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow
Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow

I’m sensing a pattern here… everything I adore with an embossed pattern seems to be either a bronzer or a highlighter! Although the highlight shade of the Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow has seen some action, it’s really the sculpting/bronzing side that’s taken a beating. I love that Sculpt shade for almost any makeup look together – it’s just so versatile!

essence Autumn Peach
essence Autumn Peach

essence‘s Autumn Peach was a surprise winner for me. When I first used it, I knew next to nothing about essence as a brand, nor what to expect out of such low-cost products. But this blush completely blew me out of the water – I couldn’t believe just how flattering it looked on my face! As a result, I’ve worn this sucker over and over again and the center ring has already been destroyed as well as some of the other circles to the sides. Love, love, LOVE!

Tarte Park Ave. Princess
Tarte Park Ave. Princess

My Tarte Off The Cuff blush and bronzer palette saw a lot of love from me over the years, but it’s the bronzer that’s carried the bulk of my love. Park Ave. Princess is such a smooth and buildable bronzer that it’s easy to see why so many people are in love with it! I’ve seemingly destroyed the middle of the Amazon River imprint. Oops!

So how about you? Can you bring yourself to dab your brush into beautifully embossed products? I know I’ve got a few friends out there that find it difficult to dip in for fear of ruining the pattern!

The essence blush and Make Up For Ever duo were provided for my consideration (clearly many, many moons ago).
