Holiday 2018: Bite Beauty Sets (Review & Swatches)

Bite Beauty Holiday 2018

Bite Beauty‘s holiday launches are always a sweet treat! Whether you’re already an avid Bite-a-holic like me, or gifting to a Bite newbie, their holidays sets always offer old favourites with a new surprise in the mix.

Bite Beauty - Agave Treat Trio Mini Agave Lip Mas Set and brand new Candy Cane Agave Lip Mask!
Bite Beauty – Agave Treat Trio Mini Agave Lip Mas Set and brand new Candy Cane Agave Lip Mask!

Hands down the item that I was the most excited for this year was Bite‘s brand new Agave Lip Mask in the scent Candy Cane. CANDY CANE??? Oh heck yesssss! Not only did they launch Candy Cane in a full sized tube, but they also put it into a mini trio set of their Agave Lip Masks ($20 CAD/$18 USD). The trio set includes their original agave mask alongside the new Candy Cane scent and (my personal favourite) the Maple lip mask. Giftable or keepable, the trio set will delight anyone that gets their hands on it.

As for the Candy Cane Agave Lip Mask ($30 CAD/$26 USD)… it’s as good as you would image: luscious and balmy with a translucent candy red colour. The scent is bang on too – this isn’t any kind of fake candy cane scent. This truly smells like you cracked open a fresh candy cane and started sucking on it. You *will* find it hard not to eat it out of the tube outright. But hey… all of Bite‘s formulas are edible so if you end up snacking on your lips, it’s not that bad… right? 😉

Need a stocking stuffer that’ll knock it out of the park AND not set your wallet back by much? The Sweet Treats Agave Lip Care Sets are only $15 CAD/$12 USD and have a ton of product in them. Each set contains a mini Agave Lip Balm in Natural, a single use Agave Sugar Lip Scrub packet and a mini Agave Lip Mask. The only difference between the two sets is that the Party Prep pack comes with the Agave Lip Mask in Champagne, and the Holiday Hangover (lol) pack comes with their Lavender Lip Mask. Sidenote: these are sold out in stores at Sephora constantly but there’s still plenty of stock online!

Bite‘s mini lipsticks are an absolute godsend and I’m always happy to own these! They’ve repeated their mini four pack over the last few years and I’m always a bit worried that they’re going to repeat too many shades over the course of the years, but thankfully, this year’s Four Little Bites Amuse Bouche Lipstick Set ($29 CAD/$25 USD) was a total shock to me – with one exception, I hadn’t ever encountered these shades before!

The duplicated shade is Nori (they had it in the 2016 holiday set), but the rest are all brand new shades to me and they’ve quickly become new favourites!

Nori is the replicated shade, but it’s a stunner. This one does have a bit of a purple base so you may find there’s a slight bit of patchiness with this one. It goes on very smoothly and creamy – almost a touch too much, so I find this one is best blotted down a touch.

Wearing Tannin

Tannin is a freaking stunner! It’s bright and luminescent – it’s the kind of red I adore wearing at Christmas time.

Wearing Date

Date absolutely surprised me because it looked so boring in the tube. But as soon as I got it on my lips it was utterly transformative. Bite calls this shade a light brown, but on me it turned into more of a light-medium pink with warm undertones. I love, love, LOVE this one!

Wearing Sake

Sake was another surprising favourite in this bunch. I love how it’s not a traditional holiday colour because it’s got that edge of purple in it. It reminds me a bit of KVD’s Lovesick, which is great because I’ve been needing a replacement for that shade! This will pair nicely with bright cool toned eyeshadow looks.

So what are your picks from Bite‘s 2018 holiday collection? Will you be picking anything up? Or gifting anything? Let me know! I’m personally dead pleased with that Four Little Bites set – I love the shades in there!

Bite Beauty French Press Lip Glosses (Full Collection – Review & Swatches)

Bite Beauty French Press Lip Gloss

Bite Beauty has this knack for pleasantly surprising me. Every time they come out with a new collection of lip products I end up having this cute little smile on my face due to their inventive ideas. They have this habit of turning on a dime to produce something different and very unique every time they launch a collection – whether they’re coming up with monthly astrology-based lip colours, or putting out spice-inspired lipsticks (seriously cannot get enough of those), or, like with today’s posted, putting out a bunch of lip glosses inspired by coffee – suffice to say, Bite has a little something special for everyone and you never know what they’re going to put out next!

The French Press Lip Gloss collection is a “a limited-edition collection of coffee-inspired lip glosses that serves up indulgently creamy shine in warm, java hues.” The formula actually uses coffee butter (is that a THING? AND TELL ME WHERE I CAN BUY IT – I feel like I need to spread this on toast!) and arabica cold press coffee oil! And of course, it wouldn’t be Bite if it wasn’t handcrafted right here in Toronto and made with natural ingredients.

While I have not fully succumbed to the gloss trend that everyone else seems to be happily jumping aboard… I have to say that these had my interest piqued. I was immediately drawn to Dirty Chai and then Salted Caramel. The colours looked creamy, delicious and… different. They’re the kind of colours that I wish I had in a lipstick, but that I just somehow don’t!

Swatched out the colours are surprisingly pigmented. And heck – you can actually see just how creamy they look!

Flat White amazed me. I used to wear these kind of muted-down, almost concealer glosses (hello MAC C-Thru!) all the time, but I’d kind of forgotten about it. And now? Now I’m back to being in love with this look!

Vanilla Latte was a shade I really wanted to love because it’s my go-to Starbucks drink order when I’m getting something other than a black coffee. But, true to the hot drink, it actually came out a little more yellow-based than I was looking for. Still pretty though!

Salted Caramel… be still my heart. This is GLORIOUS. I should’be known just from the name that I was going to love this one. It’s an easy lip colour to wear as it goes with so many orange, red and really any warm hues I’ve been wearing lately.

And sure enough, the colour that I was drawn to originally – Dirty Chai – turned out to be frigging glorious. Just look at that colour!

Things started to get a little bit patchy on me with the darker shades (this is French Press), but I think, fundamentally, that they’re not intended to be worn over naked lips unless you’re a deeper skin tone than fair/light. The colour itself is gorgeous, but you can see some distribution problems across my lips and it’s simply because it’s a dark gloss and my lips are incredibly light in comparison. If you’re pale like me and want to wear this, just fill your lips in with a similar lip pencil before applying the gloss and you’ll be good to go.

Wearing Bite Beauty French Press Lip Gloss in Black Coffee

Black Coffee performed the same as French Press did on me – which is to say that alone on ME it needs a bit of help with a lip pencil, or even just wearing it on top of a lipstick. What I really like about these two darker shades is that they’re not just black-brown – they actually have deep red bases which make them much more appealing (to me).

Final Thoughts

The formula on the Bite Beauty French Press Lip Glosses is impressive – they go on super glossy, and stay that way without any over-the-top tackiness. I was surprised to discover that they were still intact on my lips after two hours of wear. This isn’t normally the case for me – gloss has a tendency to disappear (Is it being wiped off? Am I eating it? I have no idea!) but these stayed put a heck of a lot longer than I was expecting them to.

For me, the paler colours are what I’m drawn to because they require less work but that isn’t to say the darker shades wouldn’t be less work on someone with a much deeper skin tone. When I wear a gloss I want it to be simple and easy, so for me that’s the paler options. Dirty Chai, Salted Caramel and Flat White were my clear favourites – I loved wearing those shades so, so much!

One last thing to mention – the scent. So many people have said it smells like coffee to them, but it doesn’t to me. It has a scent yes, and maybe it’s vaguely of coffee, but to me they smell like freezer burn. And I can pinpoint this scent because I used to keep a jar of instant coffee in the freezer (it was for making mocha icing) and that is EXACTLY the scent I get off of these – freezer burn coffee. (Bizarre, I know.)  The scent/taste is not intrusive however – it does linger, but it tastes fine to me!

So all in all, these are lovely. Comfortable to wear and the longevity is great. Let me know if you’ve snagged any and what you think of that! (And tell me if it smells like coffee to you!)

The Bite Beauty French Press Lip Glosses are limited edition and can be purchased on sephora.ca for $26 CAD or on sephora.com for$22 USD.

The 5 Lipsticks In My Bag

As I was emptying out my bag (a backpack, not a purse, to be clear! I frigging hate purses) of lipsticks I realized it’d make for an interesting post. What lipsticks have I been wearing throughout the summer? Well this seems like a fairly accurate representation of my overall colour theme!

The five lipsticks in my bag
The five lipsticks in my bag

Which is to say… a lot of coral, with a few toned down shades for balance!

Too Faced Peach Beach
Too Faced Peach Beach

Too Faced‘s Peach Beach lipstick is from last year’s Peaches and Cream launch and it pretty much represents my lipstick aesthetic in a nutshell: coral and matte! I find the formula on these lipsticks to be fairly creamy on application, but it dries into a comfortable matte finish with a lot of flex. There is that definite “peaches and cream” scent on the lipstick and it does not disappear while you wear it (I like it, but I know not everyone is keen on scented lipsticks).

I always tend to think of this kind of coral shade as “bright”, but it’s honestly not that bright and tends to match a lot of eye looks I pair with it – especially those in the more orange and yellow category.

Bite Beauty Saffron Fire
Bite Beauty Saffron Fire

Bite Beauty‘s Spice collection launch was such a freaking knockout hit for me this year (see the full collection swatch and reviews in this video I did a few months ago) and I’ve been wearing the shades non-stop.  Saffron Fire is definitely my most loved one and I think you can see why – it’s pure neon fire goodness. (If you’re wondering why my bullet looks like a multi-stick and not a lipstick, it’s because the formula is fairly soft and the bullet was starting to bend a bit so I started apply it like it was a chapstick and then using a lip brush to clean up my lip edges… which resulted in that shape.)

I’ve been wearing Saffron Fire at least one day a week since I got it and I’m not getting tired of the colour any time soon. This colour IS summer to me. It’s utterly perfect.

Bite Beauty Star Anise
Bite Beauty Star Anise

Another one from Bite‘s Spice collection! Star Anise isn’t what I would call a typical summer colour – it’s a bizarre pale cool-toned pink with a LOT of grey in it. Honestly, in the bullet it looks more innocuous than it does in a swatch as it goes very grey on my skin. But that’s why I like it – it’s so different and it works out really well with cool-toned glittery eyeshadow looks.

No picture, sadly, but you can see it in my Bite Beauty Spicy collection video:

Urban Decay Ex-Girlfriend
Urban Decay Ex-Girlfriend

Oh jeez… this poor, poor Urban Decay lipstick in the shade Ex-Girlfriend… it’s certainly seen better days. (I’m a bit of a lipstick murderer, so it’s not unusual for my lipsticks to look like they’ve been through World War III.) Urban Decay’s Ex-Girlfriend is essentially a balm texture with a hint of colour – which makes it perfect for those “I have no frigging idea what lipstick to pair with my eyeshadow” days.

It’s definitely a “my lips but better and more glossy” formula. I’ve paired this with every single colour combination out there and it’s never failed me. This is a total failsafe lip colour for me – I’m just sad I’m clearly destroying that bullet because it probably isn’t long for this life. 🙁

Too Faced Coral Fire
Too Faced Coral Fire

Too Faced‘s La Creme lipstick in Coral Fire – you are a dear, DEAR favourite of mine. This was another shade that I always thought was “bright” and then a few people at the office assured me that it was actually pretty toned down (I asked them for feedback – I’m never great at matching lipsticks to my looks!). The Too Faced La Creme range seems to be on the way out the door because they don’t have nearly as many shades on the market as they used to – which is SUCH a shame because it’s wonderful. The formula is creamy and buttery with a hint of shine. It also has a wonderful sweet lemon scent that is totally unique!

You can definitely see I lean a lot more coral/orange in my lipstick selections as of late, but there’s a few different shades in the mix to really change it up. What colour lipstick have you been gravitating towards lately? Let me know!
