For Halloween 2017 we decided to go with Marvel’s Avengers! This gave us a huge amount of opportunity to use current well-known characters as well as a few more obscure ones.
This post is going to be a photo sump of some of the best shots (individual and group) because I’ve had a lot of messages asking for them asap! (I love that you guys love Halloween as much as we do!) You can click all of the photos to get the full resolution image if you want to see more detail. Enjoy!
Halloween 2017 – The Avengers
Sadly, we didn’t have our Nick Fury around for the group shots!
And of course, we took our awesome costumes over to Toronto’s gay village and paraded down Church Street for photos! Our friend Shawn was a trooper and took all of the staged photos above, as well as some candid ones out on Church Street. Huge thank you to him, otherwise we wouldn’t have all of these amazing photos!
If you’re in Toronto for Halloween, Church Street is definitely the place to be! There’s tons of people, both in and out of costume, and it’s a really fun and friendly vibe in the Village.
Hope you enjoyed all the photos! I’ll have another post coming up later on today with more details of my own costume. Thanks for reading!
Halloween 2016 is done and dusted and my group of friends put together an amazing ensemble of costumes! We went as X-Men and, quite frankly, we nailed it!
Since the photos are always the most fun, I’ll post them first! At the end of this post you’ll find more details on my costume and face makeup as Mystique!
I bought the boots on Ebay – I upsized since they were shipping from China and I thought they wouldn’t fit me – turns out upsizing was too big in the foot, but it fit me perfectly in the legs.
I opted for a blue body suit to keep me warm and to suck all the jiggly bits in. It’s a blue morph suit that I got at a party store: I cut the head off and it was good to go!
The gloves are also from the same party store.
The white tunic was actually a full length shirt/dress thing I got on Ebay from somewhere in England. It had slits down the sides which was a huge help, I just trimmed the sides in so that they tapered to more of a point in the center of the panels.
My belt is a bunch of plastic skulls that I drilled through and then strung a shoelace through them to hold them together.
The little skull on my head came from a dollar store treat that my husband found as a last ditch effort to find a small enough skull for my head!
Sadly, the wig I ordered never actually arrived from China, so my wonderful friend Alison shipped me her Poison Ivy wig from last year’s costume. Thank heavens for that – the wig is such a huge piece!
The contacts are from SpookyEyes.com and they were FANTASTIC. They added an incredible touch that really completed the costume. And for a complete newbie to putting in contacts, they were really, really not that bad! The ones I wore are the Glimmer Gold contacts.
Now, on to the makeup.
I primed my face with Make Up For Ever‘s Smoothing Primer to make sure this base would last all evening.
I used MAC‘s Paint Stick in Marine Ultra and sponged *3* layers on to my skin, letting each layer dry about two minutes between applications.
I then set my entire face with a healthy amount of RCMANo-Color Powder to try to make the cream base as transferproof as possible. I let my face bake for about 15 minutes before I removed the powder.
To add dimension to my face, I went in with Sugarpill‘s Velocity eyeshadow and contoured with it. I also set my face with it to help keep the blue base from looking patchy.
I uses SugarpillVelocity and SleekInk to carve out my eyes. I also used Ink to fill in my brows.
I also used Make Up For Ever‘s Aqua XL Liners (M-26 and M-22) to line my upper and lower water lines. I used Kat Von D‘s Tattoo Liner in Trooper to create a wing, used some Urban Decay Perversion mascara and popped on a pair of EsqidoLashlorette falsies.
I used MAC‘s Brick lip pencil and MACRussian Red lipstick to finish off my lips.
And there we have it! My finished Mystique look! I had so much fun this and I’m already starting to brainstorm for what we can do next!
I know not everyone enjoys spending an entire month working on a Halloween costume only to wear it for a handful of hours while gallivanting about in the freezing cold! But, I also know that some of you may want to partake in Halloween in a slightly more quiet manner while handing out candy. So here’s a peek at some fun Halloween products that you can pick up last minute if you so desire!
Want some quick and dirty nails to make you feel festive? Keep an eye out for Broadway Nails at your drugstore – they always put out a few sets of Halloween inspired stick on nails and this year there’s a few glow in the dark options!
Last year I wore the red and black nails because they suited my Harley Quinn costume PERFECTLY. They stayed on all night and really added an extra touch to the look that may have not been overly obvious, but *I* knew they were there and that’s what mattered! Quick tip: if you feel the nails are too long, you can absolutely trim them down to fit your desired nail length!
Halloween is always the perfect opportunity to play around with your makeup and NOBODY is going to call you on it. Try out some ridiculous feathery lashes (Wet n Wild usually puts out some insane pairs for cheap prices around this time of year) or try a black lip out just for hell of it. If you need some inspiration for the black lip, I did a tutorial recently that may help:
I promise you, black eyes and a black lip are more flattering than you may think!
Or, try something else out entirely by using temporary tattoos on your eyes! KISS has some Eye Tattoos that I was initially really skeptical about (I mean, REALLY how the hell was this going to work?) but it turned out really neat! Apply the temporary tattoos as you would any other temporary tattoo, fill in the gaps with black eyeliner, add some mascara and you’ve got a fun eye for the evening! (It also came off relatively easily with an oil-based makeup remover.)
If you’d rather just relax entirely, put on a character sheet mask (doubles as a Halloween mask!) to reinvigorate your skin and give yourself a black and orange manicure. My current favourite colours are China Glaze‘s Liquid Leather and Julie G‘s Albuquerque polishes for the perfect Halloween shades!
Sheet mask bonus: you can take ridiculous selfies and sneak up on your roommate or significant other with it and scare the crap out of them! 😉
And of course, nothing beats chowing down on mini candy bars in a variety of flavours while watching a creepy movie! Let me know what your plans are for Halloween – I’d love to hear them. 🙂
Some of the items in this post were sent to me for consideration. (Sheet mask, eye tattoo, press on nails.)
We’ve reached the end folks! The last Halloween 2015 roundup is for Harvey Dent/Two Face!
The most striking thing about Shawn’s get up was definitely his face. While I didn’t do the makeup (our friend Steve did – he was Batman in our group costume), I can link you to the video where an amazing YouTuber came up with some great techniques for it!
One of the key pieces for the makeup was incorporating clear fake fingernails by cutting them down to the shape of teeth! For this, KISSclear fake nails were used. I couldn’t believe just how realistic they looked when applied to the face.
Here’s a brief time lapse video of the application process:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOLNld7LkHQ
In Shawn’s own words: “The process of applying the make-up was actually less time consuming than I thought it would be – Steve worked remarkably quickly given the significant layering required to achieve the final look.
The significant amount of liquid latex applied to my face and neck was surprisingly comfortable; to be honest, it felt like a second skin and I barely noticed it throughout the evening. The edges of the prosthetic started to peel up a few hours after the initial application, especially around the mouth, but we were able to re-secure it with some eyelash glue.
At the end of the evening, the latex peeled off very easily and there was only a small amount of make-up left on my face to remove with make-up remover. All in all it was a very smooth and painless process from start to finish.”
The one piece I did have a hand in was creating the actual Two Face outfit. Shawn bought two suits that somehow miraculously lined up pretty well, including the button holes! Unfortunately, I’m not much of a seamstress and I haven’t a clue how to operate a sewing machine. We ripped the two sides of the pants apart, as well as the jacket, and I sewed them back up together by hand. We salvaged the zipper from one of the pants and were able to use that to help keep the pants up (with a touch of Velcro to lock it in place). All in all, I think the outfit turned out surprisingly good!
And with that, we’re done for Halloween 2015! If you’re interested in the other costumes I posted about, you can find them here: | Harley Quinn | The Joker | Poison Ivy |
Halloween never really ends here on Makeup Your Mind (and I’m okay with that)! Today’s post covers Alison‘s Poison Ivy makeup as well as give you a good look at her costume in full. For details on her costume, please visit her blog post that has all the details.
Poison Ivy
Seriously adorable. I love this shot so much!
So let me start off by saying that I did her makeup and I’m really, really not used to doing beauty makeup on other people. I think I’ve only ever done makeup on my cousin before and maybe one or two high school friends (14 years ago!). So this was a bit of an exercise in nervousness for me but I was happy to be able to do it on someone else whom I’m extremely comfortable with!
Eyes
I first swept Makeup Geek‘s Latte through her crease.
I then applied Too FacedCreme Brulee shadow on the inner corner of her eye all the way to the middle. I then used InglotPearl 418 on the outer half of the lid and pulled it out quite far out to make it dramatic.
I then lined her upper lash line with Kat Von D‘s Tattoo Liner in Trooper and actually managed to create a successful wing in one shot. And then again on the other eye (SUCCESS!) I then applied Lit Cosmetics‘ Soul Sister glitter on top which… unfortunately looks patchy. Not happy with that one.
On the lower lash line, I used Lit Cosmetics’Mary Jane glitter.
She applied her own CoverGirlClump Crusher mascara and then I popped on some Quo lashes she brought. (And by the way… applying false lashes to someone else? SO MUCH EASIER THAN PUTTING IT ON MYSELF.)
For the lips, I had her apply MAC‘s Russian Red first, then some Too FacedJelly Bean on top.
Sidenote: Alison has AMAZING skin. She’s wearing absolutely nothing on her face -no foundation, no blush, no bronzer, no highlighter!
And there we have it! I was glad that she trusted me enough to do her makeup and I’m glad it turned out decently well. It also gave me a lot more confidence in working on someone else’s face!
