October 2013 Favourites

Here’s a look at the beauty products I reached for the most throughout the month of October.

Revlon’s Super Lustrous lipstick in Fire and Ice
Revlon’s Super Lustrous lipstick in Fire and Ice

Fire and Ice is the first shade of Revlon lipstick I ever bought. It’s the kind of shade that makes me think I need to own every single colour from their Super Lustrous range, although realistically I have to acknowledge that no other colour is going to compare to this shade. The first time I wore it to work I got instantaneous positive reactions from a few coworkers. To me, it looks like an electric red with a hint of orange to it. The formula is comfortable on the lips and since it’s not matte (it’s a creme), it’s also not drying. Absolutely stunning product.

Hard Candy So Baked Bronzer in Hula Hula
Hard Candy So Baked Bronzer in Hula Hula

Hard Candy‘s bronzer in Hula Hula had become a favourite of mine throughout the summer. I wasn’t expecting to continue wearing it throughout the fall months as I thought it would be too dark and shimmery on my rapidly fading tan. However, this didn’t turn out to be the case! It is still a rather dark bronzer on my skin tone (even more so on the underside of my arm as you can see in the swatch) but when applied with a light hand, this gives a wonderful glow to the face. I don’t use bronzers to contour, so I end up sweeping this across the highpoints of my face. The bonus with this one is that because of the shimmery gold specs in the product, it can also double as a bronzey-blush with built in cheek highlight!

As a note: I don’t tend to wear this bronzer if I have a very shimmery eye look on as it can be a bit overpowering.

Joe Fresh Cream Blush in Apricot

Joe Fresh is a new company to me. I reviewed a few of their products very recently and this particular one stayed in constant rotation in my morning makeup routine. I don’t have a lot of experience with cream blushes and was a bit worried about how good the staying power would be. Imagine my surprise when the Apricot (a peach shade that tends to learn slightly pink on my skin) stayed safely on my cheeks throughout an entire work day (applied around 7 am, removed around 5 pm) and was actually VISIBLE on the cotton pad I used at night to remove my makeup. I hope all of the blushes in their cream line is as good as this one because I am definitely interested in picking up a few more!

MAC’s Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft and Gentle
MAC’s Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft and Gentle

This is probably a staple in quite a lot of people’s makeup collections, and it has been in mine for several years as well. Lately I’ve found myself reaching for it more and more.MAC‘s Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft and Gentle is a lovely champagne highlighter that I used quite often throughout October to highlight my cheeks. In the past I’ve also used it as an eyeshadow,  however this month it was solely applied to my cheeks.

CoverGirl Clump Crusher in Very Black (water resistant)
CoverGirl Clump Crusher in Very Black (water resistant)

I’m only going to mention this product in this monthly favourites, but rest assured that this is a “forever favourite”. I, like many others, was swayed by the utterly insane hype over CoverGirl‘s Clump Crusher mascara on YouTube about a year ago. While I love my L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black in waterproof, the reality is that sometimes you just want to try something new. This mascara does not disappoint! The oddly-shaped brush helps me get from the roots of my lashes to the tip multiple times over without, you guessed it, any clumps. I personally don’t apply multiple layers of mascara, but just for giggles one time I decided to do it just to see I could get the mascara to clump. No such climps. This stuff is beyond fantastic.

My only gripe with it? And this is one I’m willing to overlook because the brush and formula are so amazing… But there is no true waterproof formula for this mascara. I regularly buy the water resistant formula of this mascara and I have to say it just does not hold up to water at all. If anything remotely damp gets near your eye, this mascara WILL smudge. However, as I’ve already said, this is a detail I’m willing to overlook considering how amazing the results can be.

Let me know if you had any particular beauty favourites throughout October!

Review: Joe Fresh

Joe Fresh is a brand created for Superstore/Loblaws in Canada (although their Wikipedia page indicates they’re also available in JC Penny in the U.S., but I’m unsure if that includes the makeup line, or just the clothing). They came out with their makeup line in 2009 with a price point of $8 or less. I’ve skipped over Joe Fresh makeup a few times without really thinking about it, but when I received a $20 off voucher for Superstore/Loblaws I decided to take a closer look at this brand.

One of the first things that drew me into this line is their packaging. It’s very simple and clean. I love the fact that the bronzer in completely encased in clear plastic. The cream blush is similar, although frosted.

Joe Fresh’s bronzer in Sand is a matte, pale tan shade. This will be an excellent bronzer for those with very pale skin and  I’m going to love using this one during the dead of winter. For the late summer/start of fall this was not strong enough to show up on my skin, despite it being very pigmented and smooth. The texture is incredibly soft (touch the product with your fingertips, you’ll be amazed) but it does mean you’ll kick up a lot of product with your brush if you stab at it aggressively. Pat the bronzer lightly to pick up a bit of product and you’ll end up with less mess and just enough on your brush. I noticed zero hint of orange to this shade which makes it not at all intimidating for anyone concerned that they’ll end up looking like an Oompa Loompa.

Joe Fresh Cream Blush in Apricot ($8/4.2g)

Their cream blush in Apricot  turned out to be a massive hit for me! On me, Apricot is peach shade that leans slightly more pink. This is such an easy colour to wear – it goes on smoothly and last through an entire workday without any fading (which, for me, means I applied it at 7:30 am and took it off somewhere around 5 pm). The pigmentation and creaminess is the best I’ve experienced so far in cream blushes. I’ve been using a brush to apply it, but you could easily blend this onto your cheeks with your fingertips. I’d highly recommend this formula to anyone looking for a long lasting cream blush.

Joe Fresh Lip Tint in Mango ($6/3.4ml)
Joe Fresh Lip Tint in Mango ($6/3.4ml)

The Lip Tint in Mango is an incredibly vibrant coral shade that leans heavily on the orange side of coral in the tube. It has liquid, gel-like texture that goes on semi-sheer and comes with a doe-foot applicator which makes application simple. The colour, on me, goes on slightly pinker than what I can see in the tube and it’s a beautiful shade. It goes on somewhat shiny, but it does dry down and becomes a rather matte colour.

Unfortunately, that’s where the good stuff ends: This stuff tastes like toxic waste – there’s a very distinct acrid taste to the product that is impossible to ignore. If you happen to lick your lips to get used to the taste of it (and it does taste nasty, which is bizarre because it doesn’t smell offensive straight out of the tube) you end up removing all of the product from your lips. The lip tint will eventually stain, but you need to hold your lips immobile for quite some time before this happens (we’re talking upwards of 10 or more minutes here). If you move your lips, you end up with that horrible taste in your mouth which will inevitably lead to either wiping the product off with a tissue, or just licking it off as quickly as possible to get rid of the taste. This is one of few products I have bought over the years that I’m considering throwing straight into the bin. The only reason I’ve held onto it for so long was to test it long enough for this review. I would not recommend picking this product up even if the colours do appeal to you.

Overall, I really like the bronzer for the winter months, I absolutely love that cream blush… and the lip tint? Well, I dislike throwing products out, but realistically I’m never going to use it. It’s a shame, because I really do like that shade on my lips, but it’s just not worth the hassle.

Have you tried any Joe Fresh beauty products? Anything in particular you thought was especially good?
