As I was putting together this roundup of looks, I started to realize just how much I’ve been using my Makeup Geek shadows lately. I mean, I use them a lot on a regular basis, but three out of the five looks are solely Makeup Geek in here!
I did this for a YouTube video tutorial but had to repost it here because I know not everyone has the time for videos (I’ll continue to repost my video tutorial looks on the blog as time goes on).
Eyes
(using the Viseart 08 Editorial Brights palette) I first covered my lid with NYX‘s Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencil in Milk and then:
MAC‘s Cork in the crease.
The yellow shade from the palette on the inner third of the lid.
The orange on the middle of the lid.
The red on the outer half of the lid.
The lime green on the inner corner of the lid.
(also listed as 5) MAC‘s Blanc Type to highlighter the brow bone.
I applied the light blue to the middle of my lower lash line and the purple to the outer section of the lower lash line. I created the wing with Kat Von D‘s Tattoo Liner in Trooper and tightlined my water lines with Marc Jacobs‘ Highliner Gel Crayon in Blacquer. I coated my lashes with Make Up For EverSmoky Stretch mascara and applied House of LashesBombshell falsies.

Although I love the Kat Von DMi Vida Loca Remix palette, I’ve not been using it because I was trying to work through a bunch of other palettes. I said enough was enough, and went back to it for it this look!

Monthly haul time! January’s haul is a bit of a mix of things – some items I received for Christmas from family members (but didn’t get a chance to photograph until January), as well as some birthday items (January baby here!). Enjoy!
I know little to nothing about this brand Chemins de Provence aside from the fact that my brother picked it up for me in France. These are bath salts and the scent is in Almond. I’ve used them once so far and loved the scent, although I definitely did not smell almonds. I’ve previously finished up lavender scented bath salts by the same brand, which you can see in my most recent Empties video.
Another present from my brother, and presumably from France as well since I’m totally unfamiliar with the brand. Fraise l’exquise de Energie Fruit is a shower gel that I’ve added to my collection but haven’t had the opportunity to use yet because I’m totally overwhelmed with all the shower gel I currently have in my linen closet, so this has essentially moved to the back of the lineup!
L’Occitane‘s Pamplemousse Rhubarbe (Grapefruit and Rhubarb) is a limited edition scent that my mom picked up for me in a shower gel (yep, into the closet it goes!) for Christmas. She knows I love anything grapefruit scented, and the rhubarb is a great addition to the scent!
Annnnd since she knows I love grapefruit so much, she also picked up a pack of Neutrogena grapefruit wipes for me. Made me laugh when I opened the package!
My mother in law gifted me this JergensWet Skin Moisturizer. I had heard about in-shower moisturizers (like the one by Nivea), but I had never tried them out. This one is slightly different in the sense that you apply it just after you’ve gotten out of the shower, but before you towel off. While it feels like a normal moisturizer, what’s cool to me is that unlike a normal moisturizer, this works with the moisture on your skin in order to hydrate your limbs. Usually if I apply a typical moisturizer to wet skin it slides right off – this one doesn’t! So after I’ve applied to my wet skin, I towel/pat myself try and I’m good to go. Really, really handy for quick moisturizing without having to worry about it needing to sink in for a lengthy period of time!
One of the cute things my mother in law put in my stocking (hi Ruth!) are these Burt’s Bees items; a lip balm and a cuticle cream. She had read in my stocking stuffer guide (prior to Christmas) that my grandmother would typically put a Burt’s Bees lipbalm in my stocking, so she decided to keep the tradition going since we were in Wisconsin this year and not in Ottawa! Very sweet touch. 🙂
Sooo here in Canada, I’ve never seen Chap Stick in these cool scents. I’d seen plenty of American bloggers and YouTubers mention them, but they never seemed to be available in Canada. I need lip balm like I need more shower gel (which is to say not at all!), but I wanted these because I just can’t find them here! The Pumpkin Pie one is incredible (so, so nice to wear that one) and the Candy Cane one is as to be expected – very candy cane-like. Currently wishing I’d also picked up the Cake Batter one as well, but I think it would’ve been a little too sweet for my tastes.
Alright, here’s a biggie! My mother in law gave me some cash for my birthday and encouraged me to hit up Ulta while we were visiting. I needed no convincing and I knew exactly what I was going to pick up – the LoracMega Pro 2.
I had died a small death by not getting the original Mega Pro (RIP) and have been wanting to try Lorac eyeshadows out since then. What better way to do that than with an ENORMOUS palette? (I’m seriously dreading Swatch Sunday for this sucker… that’s a LOT of photos to edit.) I’m so happy to have this palette in my collection now. 🙂
Another thing I picked up from Ulta is the Tree Hut Shea Sugar Scrub in the Brazilian Nut scent. I’ve actually already finished one of these before and I knew I wanted more of them. Out of all of their scrubs, this is definitely my favourite scent.
While we now have NYX stores in Toronto, I hadn’t been able to get out there yet, so I picked up the very last NYX Micro-Brow in Taupe at Ulta while I was there. Love, love, love this brow pencil – it’s so much easier to use when I’m in a rush than say a pomade or the like. (I still love those too, they’re just not a product I want to dip into when I need to do my makeup quickly.)
This was such an impulse purchase and I’m still a little dazed and confused by it. I was inside a Sephora at JC Penney (holy smokes they have a lot more amazing sets there!) and noticed they still had a few shades left from the US-exclusive Frozen Berries collection by Bite Beauty. I picked up the shade Juniper because it’s a stunning shade… but on further reflection I already have this shade in a few other lipsticks! It’s not dissimilar to Kir Royale (also by Bite) and Too FacedMelted Berry. Did I need another lipstick in the exact same shade? NO! But now I own it and I feel kind of silly about it.
A few products from a generous friend here. She was at the MAC Warehouse sale a few months back (I think) and picked up this Full Fuchsia pan blush for me because it was super bright and she figured I’d like it. And I do! Soo pretty!
A new Maybelline quad in Luminous Lilacs. This looks like new packaging for the quads (to me anyway, I’m not overly familiar with their eyeshadows except for the ones that used to come in a chevron pattern) and I have yet to bust open this one!
Next up is a trio of The Body Shop body butters in their tiny size. She gifted me this because it has a tiny Satsuma one in there (and she knew my husband wasn’t a fan – haha!). There’s also a Strawberry and Mango one in there as well.
The next two items are freaking AWESOME! She also gifted me The Body Shop‘s Frosted Cranberry Shimmer Lotion! I had a small bottle of it last year but had used the whole thing up. This stuff is MAGIC. I love the scent, and it actually deposits very fine silver shimmer onto your skin. It’s not for everyone, but I love glitter all day, every day, so this is so, so nice to wear because it makes my skin gleam.
In addition to the shimmer lotion, she also handed me the shimmer mist (also in Frosted Cranberry). This is more of a bodyspray with fine shimmer in it, but I find the shimmer particles are not as strong as the shimmer lotion. Love the packaging too – it’s like a snowglobe!
The next two items are from my lovely friend Kat (well… her real name is Sara, but I call her Kat). We do a gift exchange at Christmas and she freaking spoiled me this year! She knew I had been lusting over the Laura Geller baked sorbet blush in Guava (Laura Geller is impossible to find in Canada), and not only did she find it, but she also managed to score it in an amazing set that came with a face primer, lip gloss and mascara. Unfortunately, the sparkly clutch it came in started shedding glitter particles everywhere so it’s not especially usable. The blush though… incredible. I’m so, so in love with it.
The other thing she spoiled me on is the LoracUnzipped Gold palette. Kat had asked me what brands we didn’t have access to in Canada and Lorac was my first response since I didn’t have any of their palettes at the time she asked (of course then I went and bought the Mega Pro 2 above when I was in Wisconsin…).
The shades in this palette speak to me and I’ve heard Samantha Jane going on about it a lot so I knew it had to be mine!
Phew! That’s it for January! I’m sticking to a very minimal buying pattern for the next few months since I’m saving up for IMATS New York (Sugarpill EVERYTHING) in April. Luckily, I’ve also received a few Sephora gift cards so if I feel the need to splurge, I’ve got those in my back pocket! 😉
Launching in North America on February 4, 2016 at all MAC locations (internationally in March 2016), the MACFlamingo Park collection is nothing to squawk at.
(Too much?)
Let’s get real. I saw this collection had freaking flamingos, corals and reds and I fell in love with it. I mean, how could you not, when the promo image looks like this:
Um yep. SOLD.
Let’s dive into some of the products, shall we? (Products first, full face shots follow. For a full list of products available in this collection, please visit Swatch & Review.)
The first stunner of the collection is a pinky-coral-red that set my heart on fire. This is the kind of shade that I gasp over and want multiples of. I have this shade in blushes, in lipsticks, and I can never, ever get enough of it. Life’s A Picnic is a satin blush that can be applied intensely for those looking for a strong cheek colour. Or, apply it gently for a vibrant flush of colour.
This may be a spring collection, but Life’s A Picnic is the kind of shade that I want to wear RIGHT NOW. It gives me that wintry “came in from the cold” look that I love so, so much.
Next up is Nice To Meet You, an intense deep pink-red lipstick with a cremesheen finish. As is usual of cremesheens, this glides onto my lips with intense pigmentation and shine. The shine holds up for several hours (as if you’d applied a gloss over top of your lipstick) and the pigmentation is vibrant and wonderful.
Sidenote: I’m someone who needs to apply lip primer before I wear *any* lipstick as I’m prone to lip line bleedout. I’m especially susceptible to that with cremesheens since this formula has more slip to it. I always, always, always use MAC‘s Prep + Prime for lips (they’ve been in my Empties posts since I first started this blog!) and it keeps everything in place. Just a word to the wise for those of you who suffer with the same problems I do!
The cremesheen glass I have is Sweet Tooth, a warm mid-tone pink. This is the kind of shade that almost everyone I know loves to wear because it’s not only flattering, but it’s also really easy to wear. You can apply this on the fly and not really worry about it. It wears well on the lips and it’ll also wear off nicely (no nasty lip line, etc.). And also… I personally feel kind of awkward in true pink lip colours (I find them too girly), but I really, really liked how this looked on me, which is always a pleasant surprise!
Rounding out the collection are some permanent pigments: Golden Olive (frost) and Tan (frost). I’ve used MAC pigments again and again over the years and they never fault me. I even press them so I can have a solid eyeshadow!
Golden Olive has been a staple in my collection for years: It’s a green pigment with golden sheen that does wonders on the eyelids. Tan, although new to me, has been around for years and is well loved by the beauty blogging world. Tan is a shade that most people feel comfortable wearing because it’s a soft bronze with a pink sheen.
MAC Flamingo Park Looks
In the shot above I’m wearing Tan and Golden Olive pigment on my eyes, Life’s A Picnic blush on my cheeks and Sweet Tooth cremesheen glass on my lips.
Same eyeshadow and blush as above, but this time I’m wearing Nice To Meet You lipstick.
For the eyes, I applied Tan pigment all over the lid with MAC‘s Handwritten on the outer half of the lid and through the crease. Blanc Type is on my brow bone to highlight. The only shadow on my lower lash line is Golden Olive pigment.
Final Thoughts
MAC‘s Flamingo Park collection intrigued me with its colours and then suckered me in completely with the quality and pigmentation of the shades. Although there are some permanent products in the mix (and let’s be honest, MAC‘s permanent products are often overlooked, but they are always excellent), the real standouts for me are the Life’s A Picnic blush (that red-pink is to die for) and the Sweet Tooth cremesheen glass which took me by surprise. I’m currently eyeing the lipstick that’s available online only called The Fashion Flock because it’s a pink-coral matte shade and I’m allllll about that life! The lipstick I received is gorgeous, but I’m more of a lover of mattes in the lipstick world (but to each their own!). And, as always, the pigments are amazing, but since they’re permanent, you can get them any time!
So what are you eyeballing? What about Flamingo Park has caught your attention?
The products featured in this post were provided for consideration.
This post is nothing more than an appreciation for embossed products – ones I’ve loved enough to wear down the gorgeous pattern that’s been imprinted on it. Enjoy!
Let’s start this post off with one of the more infuriating products I’ve had the pleasure of working with; the Physicians FormulaBronze Booster was in my Use Up 2014 project… and as you can see I clearly did not finish it up (or even hit pan!). The only thing I managed to do was dust away the sun emblem that used to appear in the very middle. I became so enraged with my lack of progress on this bronzer that I really don’t think I touched it at all in 2015. Damn thing hurt my feelings! 😉
With the infuriating product out of the way, let’s talk about something I love immensely. My MACSea Me, Hear Me blush is one I’ve reached for continuously since I bought it in 2014 (I even mentioned it in my 2015 Favourites video). I seem to have been focusing on wiping out the curve of the wave as well as the repeated MAC logo on the upper half.
Another stunner from MAC – the highgly coveted Whisper of Gilt. I purchased this when it was repromoted and it’s been my go-to highlighter when I want a gold shade. Unlike the blush above that has the same pattern, this one seems to flake off in odd chunks. It never looks that way on the skin, but it’s certainly left behind a mottled pattern!
Although the bronzing side from this Make Up For EverPro Sculpting Duo (#1) hasn’t been touched much, I can’t say the same for the highlighter! The iridescent pinky-beige highligter is unbelievably epic. Since it can lean quite pink, I tend to reserve it for days where it’ll work with my makeup, but that definitely doesn’t mean it gets neglected in my collection! I’ve swiped clean the center of the upraised bumps and I’m sure I’ll have the whole thing cleared off by the end of the year. (Full review on the Pro Sculpting Duo right here.)
I’m sensing a pattern here… everything I adore with an embossed pattern seems to be either a bronzer or a highlighter! Although the highlight shade of the Charlotte TilburyFilmstar Bronze & Glow has seen some action, it’s really the sculpting/bronzing side that’s taken a beating. I love that Sculpt shade for almost any makeup look together – it’s just so versatile!
essence‘s Autumn Peach was a surprise winner for me. When I first used it, I knew next to nothing about essence as a brand, nor what to expect out of such low-cost products. But this blush completely blew me out of the water – I couldn’t believe just how flattering it looked on my face! As a result, I’ve worn this sucker over and over again and the center ring has already been destroyed as well as some of the other circles to the sides. Love, love, LOVE!
My TarteOff The Cuff blush and bronzer palette saw a lot of love from me over the years, but it’s the bronzer that’s carried the bulk of my love. Park Ave. Princess is such a smooth and buildable bronzer that it’s easy to see why so many people are in love with it! I’ve seemingly destroyed the middle of the Amazon River imprint. Oops!
So how about you? Can you bring yourself to dab your brush into beautifully embossed products? I know I’ve got a few friends out there that find it difficult to dip in for fear of ruining the pattern!
The essence blush and Make Up For Ever duo were provided for my consideration (clearly many, many moons ago).
Alright, it’s been a while since I’ve done a roundup of looks. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a lot of pizzazz in my looks throughout December as I felt like I was eternally rushing around, so this roundup is going to include my actual New Year’s look, some guest posts and a suuuuper old look from June I still hadn’t posted yet. Enjoy!
So here’s what I actually wore on New Year’s Eve. We didn’t have extravagant plans (we ended up going to an arcade), but I wanted to at least have a splash of glitter on! I ended up applying false lashes later on, but didn’t get around to reshooting the pictures, so what you’re looking at is sans falsies. This look does use the Too Faced Chocolate Bon Bons palette, but I promise there’s a full Challenge Week coming up focusing on that palette soon!

This look was completely focused on featuring Too Faced’s Melted Villain lipstick. Although it’s a dark purple, I have to admit that it mostly comes out looking black on me. that’s okay though! I love the colour and it’s NOT patchy! (And yes, I did wear this exact look to work that day!)

I looooved this look! I did this as a guest post for Up The Rollercoaster last month and just adored how the shots came out. I wasn’t sure how the cranberry tones in the shadows would work with a red lip and if I’m honest, I think it’s a LITTLE bit off, but the overall effect is WA-BAM!
^^ That right there’s a money shot. I’m so pleased with it! 😀

Another guest post! (This time for Writing Whimsy.) I really love doing guest posts because it gives me an opportunity to be totally creative. Usually I’ll take a Saturday afternoon and spend a couple hours working on one. This is very different from my usual makeup roundups which are done almost exclusively as my daily work makeup (which doesn’t always afford me the luxury of playing around with glitter since I’m usually in a rush!).
Eyes
After priming my eyelids, I applied NYX‘s Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencil in Black Bean all over the lid and blended out the edges. Then:
I deepened my almost non-existent crease (thanks hooded lids) with MAC‘s Cork.
I covered the entire lid with Urban Decay‘s Blackout, making sure to blend it into Cork.
I then patted on Lit Cosmetics’ glitter in Disco Diva using their glitter adhesive.
MAC‘s Blanc Type is on the brow bone to even everything out.
On the inner corner, I blended together Naked CosmeticsIV-05 and IV-03 and patted it on.
I created the inner corner point with Kat Von D‘s Tattoo Liner in Trooper, thinly lining my upper lash line with it as well. I tightlined my water lines with Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Crayon in Blacquer and applied essence get big! lashes waterproof mascara to my lashes. I lined my lower lash line Lit CosmeticsPeacock glitter.
