What I Bought This Month – February 2016 Haul

Monthly haul time! Enjoy. 🙂

Inglot - Duraline ($18 CAD)
Inglot – Duraline ($18 CAD)

Let’s start off with the only item I actually BOUGHT this month! Inglot‘s Duraline was a must have for me since my Inglot red gel liner turned gloppy on me. Duraline will soften up gel liners that have gone a little bit stale (or any other cream product). I’ve put off buying it for a while now, but when my red gel liner died, I knew it was time to invest. 🙂

So, that may have been the only item I bought this month, but I am very, very lucky to have a ton of beauty blogging friend in Toronto and we do swaps every few months. It gives me a chance to get rid of product that don’t work for me, and pick up ones that could potentially be love at first sight. So here’s the goodies I got from a swap:

Inglot - empty palettes
Inglot – empty palettes

I realize these are empty Inglot palettes, but I am SO excited for that! I love Inglot‘s system of palettes, and I think the packaging is beautiful, but it annoys me to buy packaging every time I go to buy shadows. Now I’ve got three empty palettes I can fill with beautiful colours!

I love... Coconut & Cream
I love… Coconut & Cream

I do not need shower gel. At all. And yet, I always grab for it when I see it at a swap. Why? Maybe because I always considered shower gel as so unnecessarily expensive in stores that I really don’t want to pay for it again any time soon. I love shower gel, and this smells wonderful, but it’s gone to the back of my “to use” pile of shower gels. I’m sure I’ll get to it… at some point. lol

Josie Maran - Argan Infinity Creamy Lip & Cheek Oil in Limitless Pink
Josie Maran – Argan Infinity Creamy Lip & Cheek Oil in Limitless Pink

One of my favourite YouTubers (StrwberrySweet – mostly does Project Pans) panned one of these Josie Maran Argan Infinity Creamy Lip & Cheek Oil relatively recently, and I wanted to see what they were all about. My initial reaction is that I’m not super keen on the scent of them, but that it wore well and looked good!

Boscia - Intensifying Moisture Pack
Boscia – Intensifying Moisture Pack

This Boscia Intensifying Moisture Pack + is sitting in my medicine cabinet and while I’m writing this up I realize I haven’t even got a clue as to whether this is a facial cleanser or a moisturizer. Heh.

Benefit Air Patrol
Benefit Air Patrol

I’ve harped on about my problems with eyeshadow primers before so I won’t bore you with the details other than to say I love trying new ones. Benefit‘s Air Patrol is adorable looking and I’m excited to see how this one holds up!

Aveenon Fresh Essentials Daily Nourishing Moisturizer
Aveeno Fresh Essentials Daily Nourishing Moisturizer

I love Aveeno‘s skincare products and I’ve been using them for the last… 14 years. Eek. Anyway, I haven’t tried out their Fresh Essentials range so I’m looking forward to using this one.

Vitabath - Sweet Pink Peppermint
Vitabath – Sweet Pink Peppermint

More shower gel! I got sucked in by the scent of Vitabath‘s Sweet Pink Peppermint – it’s more of a Christmasy scent, so I’ll probably bust it out in November.

The Body Shop Satsuma Body Butter
The Body Shop Satsuma Body Butter

MWAHAHAHAH!!!!! The Body Shop‘s Satsuma scent has been one of my favourite scents throughout my entire life and yet… my husband doesn’t like the scent of it. I haven’t repurchased it since I used my last big tub up of the body butter… but now I have another one. 😀

NYC Liquid Liner
NYC Liquid Liner

NYC‘s Liquid Liner has been touted as one of the best matte black liquid liners at the drugstore and I hadn’t gotten around to picking it up! Initial reaction: DEFINITELY matte, DEFINITELY black… but I’m not in love with the way the tip of the brush is cut. Hmmm… maybe I’ll just cut it myself.

Misslyn nail polish in 756
Misslyn nail polish in 756

No one wanted this Misslyn nail polish in 756… which was great for me since I wear this kind of silver disco polish on my toenails 24/7 so picked this one up since I’ve never tried a Misslyn polish before.

B Kamins Laboratories
B Kamins Laboratories

I know NOTHING about this B Kamins brand… but the body lotion says “Maple” on it. It, however, smells nothing like maple, so I was totally duped. 😐

BH Cosmetics - Galaxy Chic
BH Cosmetics – Galaxy Chic

/GASP

BH Cosmetics - Galaxy Chic
BH Cosmetics – Galaxy Chic

I couldn’t believe someone brought this to the swap. I had lusted over this Galaxy Chic palette years ago when BH Cosmetics released it, but never bought it because like everything else in the makeup world… you become so inundated with products you end up buying some, and not others. The colours, the marbling, the names of the colours… everything about this palette makes me so, SO happy. I’ve used it twice now and love the shadows. Not a matte in sight though, so it’s not a standalone palette.

Maybelline Lash Sensational
Maybelline Lash Sensational

A new mascara for me to try out: The Maybelline Lash Sensational. I’ve still got a lot of mascara left in my currently opened tubes, so it’ll be a while before I bust into this one.

Etude House Vivid Popstick
Etude House Vivid Popstick

I’m not too familiar with Etude House‘s makeup, so I was excited to see a few items by them. This is essentially one of those matte lipstick crayons. I like it, but I don’t love it.

Etude House - Color Lipsfit
Etude House – Color Lipsfit

Not tried this one yet… this is by Etude House as well and I think it’s just for lips.. but may be for cheeks as well. It’s still sitting in my “To Use” pile!

Coloured Raine - Electric Raine
Coloured Raine – Electric Raine

Oh wow. Okay… I had heard about Coloured Rained via NikkieTutorials on YouTube, but never bought any. BUT THIS IS AMAZING! IT’s nowhere near as drying as the Colour Pop liquid lipsticks – instead this one is so much more comfortable on me lips. I may need more…

Clip - Lipnicure in Trouble Peach
Clip – Lipnicure in Trouble Peach

Unfortunately, Clio‘s Lipnicure was a straight “into the garbage” item. It applied patchily and then just really poorly. To the point where I removed it mid-day at work and it was a disaster to remove. I threw it straight into the trash. 🙁

Too Faced La Creme in Loganberry
Too Faced La Creme in Loganberry

This one astonished me. Too Faced‘s Loganberry La Creme lipstick was discontinued about a year ago and I was never able to get my hands on it. Imagine my surprise that someone would want to get rid of it! YESSSS!

THEFACESHOP - Face Mask Aloe
THEFACESHOP – Face Mask Aloe

A face mask via THEFACESHOP. This’ll be my first time using anything by THEFACESHOP.

Annabelle Brow-To-Go
Annabelle Brow-To-Go

A brow kit from Annabelle that has turned out to be wayyy too dark for me, but it has worked when I need to darken up my eyebrows to look more like someone else (see my The 100 Wanheda/Clarke tutorial).

Annabelle Brow Show
Annabelle Brow Show

Another Annabelle brow product! Brow Show is light enough for me so this has actually been working out and it’s really easy to use. Not enjoying the huge size of the pencil, but the product is nice!

And we’re done! I’m doing pretty well conserving my money for IMATS New York, and these swaps are definitely helping me to keep products rotating in and out of my collection1

Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid (Review & Swatches)

Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid

Doesn’t the packaging and colours of the new Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquids take your breath away? I kind of see this launch as an extension of the Vivid lipstick launch (what was that… four years ago? Eek!) and I LOVED that launch so, so much.

Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid
Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid

So the new Vivid Matte Liquids are essentially a lipstick with a “creamy liquid base that creates a soft, cushiony feel that glides on smooth to a matte finish”. But… they’re not actually matte. And they don’t dry matte. The only way to get them to turn matte is to actually blot them down with a tissue.

Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid - applicator
Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid – applicator

This isn’t going to be a terribly positive review, so please let me start out with what I DO love about the Vivid Mattes before I get into all of my negatives. Number one is the applicator. This thing is pure gold for applying lip colour. It’s long and slanted and because of its length, it does a phenomenal job of creating straight lines as you apply colour (drag the edges across your lips in one smooth motion). I’m fairly terrible at applying lip colour without causing skipping and this completely stopped that from happening. Love!

Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid swatches: Rebel Red, Berry Boost & Vivid Violet

The other aspect I’m in love with is the colour range. They have some neutrals, but I was drawn to the bold, vibrant shades. The colours above are just BEAUTIFUL!.

Wearing Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid in Rebel Red

Rebel Red is a lot of fun and this one applied the most consistently.

Wearing Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid in Berry Boost
Wearing Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid in Berry Boost

Berry Boost was the best shade to blot down to create a matte texture.

Wearing Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid in Vivid Violet
Wearing Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid in Vivid Violet

Vivid Violet was fairly patchy, but there’s no denying that colour impact.

However… like I said… this isn’t going to be a positive review. So let’s dissect why:

  • The formula actually creates a numbing sensation on my lips. And we’re not talking “plumping” either. It’s like I applied Orajel on my lips – they feel NUMB! The sensation does disappear after about an hour, but it’s not a comfortable feeling. (And I’m definitely not the only person that’s noticed this.)
  • The scent on these is very unpleasant to me. I like the scent of the Maybelline Vivid lipsticks (although I don’t really know how to describe it… slightly sweet?), but these smell nothing like those. This has a wickedly strong floral/old lady/potpourri scent that lingered the entire time I wore these. DO NOT WANT.
  • These aren’t matte, and so, matte should not appear in the name. You can blot them down so that they become matte, but you lose a lot of the pigmentation that way.
  • The formula moves around on my lips. Even with lip primer and invisible lip liner, these still bled outside my lip lines and (worse) started to smear on the outside corners of my mouth. (Think fruit punch mouth.) This required constant maintenance and I was eternally worried that I looked like I had no idea how to apply lipstick.
  • There’s inconsistencies in the formula: Rebel Red was the smoothest to wear, Vivid Violet was fairly patchy, and Berry Boost wore best when blotted with a tissue.

Thoughts on how you can possibly make these work:

  • I only wore the bright shades, maybe the lighter ones are less obvious to smear/move around?
  • I didn’t try this, but I imagine a lip liner in the same colour as the Vivid Matte would help control the product.
  • …and that’s all I’ve got.

Final Thoughts

I’m so sorry to say that I really can’t with this product. It smells bad, it numbs my lips (like what??? No Maybelline product has ever done that to me!) and it  won’t stay put without leaking out the sides of my lips. I know this is a very strong “NO” review, but it’s not like it’s fun to come down so harshly on products – and I really, REALLY wanted to love these. I love Maybelline as a brand, and I still love and use many of their products (like seriously, go look at the epic-ness of their new eye primer) but this was just a total miss for me. 🙁

Maybelline Master Prime Long-Lasting Eyeshadow Base (Review & Testing)

Maybelline Master Prime Long-Lasting Eyeshadow Base

I’ve really been struggling with eyeshadow primers in the last two years. I’ve been unable to use a single primer on my greasepit eyelids and have had to double up (lately I’ve been using Too Faced and Milani in conjunction). This is expensive, time consuming and, frankly, quite frustrating.

So I’m ALWAYS up for trying out a new eyeshadow primer in the hopes that I can find THE ONE. Suddenly… along came Maybelline‘s brand new Master Prime Long-lasting Eyeshadow Base in 420 Prime & Matte (although I believe this is the only shade available).

Maybelline Master Prime Long-Lasting Eyeshadow Base
Maybelline Master Prime Long-Lasting Eyeshadow Base

Here are the basics: The Master Prime contains a colour grip formula to hold pigments in place – making any shadow a 24Hour formula. It creates a perfect, smooth canvas for pure colour impact – no creasing or smearing to get in the way of showcasing your eyes. It retails for approximately $11 CAD.

24 hours is a HUGE claim, but the reality is that most people just want their makeup to last an entire workday (which is somewhere in the 10-12 hour ballpark area when you factor in commuting).

Maybelline Master Prime wand
Maybelline Master Prime wand

The Master Prime comes with a typical doefoot applicator. It does collect a lot of product on the wand as I think the filter on the inside of the packaging isn’t very tight. That being said, it works out quite well because the amount of product you see on the wand above is exactly how much I use to cover both eyelids.

Maybelline Master Prime swatch
Maybelline Master Prime swatch

I almost totally disregarded this product based on how it looked. I mean, it’s this awkward colour of brown that doesn’t go translucent (or so I thought), how the heck was I going to wear this on my eyes as a base? I was very, VERY wrong however. Despite the stark colour difference in my hand swatch, the colour seeps into my lids and loses a lot of its colouring. I don’t know how it does that, but it works for me!

Maybelline Master Primer Time Trial - comparison between 7:30 am and 5:15 pm
Maybelline Master Primer Time Trial – comparison between 7:30 am and 5:15 pm

So here’s how it plays out. On the left is my eye makeup at 7:30 AM right after I’d applied it to go to work. The shot on the right is how my makeup looked when I got home from work at 5:15 PM. Aside from a slight lighting change, I see no difference in my eye makeup at all.

Maybelline Master Primer after roughly 10 hours
Maybelline Master Primer after roughly 10 hours

Here’s a close up shot of my closed lid so you can see a little bit more. I’m starting to show faint signs of creasing on the inner most corner of my eye where the deep fold in my lid is. And… that’s it. For 10 hours, while only using a single primer, this is INCREDIBLE for me. I’ve been using it for a week solid now and it’s the same results every single day!

Final Thoughts

I may be totally done with all of my other eyeshadow primers, because the Maybelline Master Prime is totally doing it for me! I’m so pleased with the long wear time, the lack of creasing which I’m excessively prone to and the fact that this is a drugstore product with an excellent price point. If you’ve been struggling with your eyeshadow creasing on you like I have been, you may want to give this one a shot!

What I Bought This Month – January 2016 Haul

Monthly haul time! January’s haul is a bit of a mix of things – some items I received for Christmas from family members (but didn’t get a chance to photograph until January), as well as some birthday items (January baby here!). Enjoy!

Chemins de provence sels de bain - amande (free - gift)
Chemins de provence sels de bain – amande (free – gift)

I know little to nothing about this brand Chemins de Provence aside from the fact that my brother picked it up for me in France. These are bath salts and the scent is in Almond. I’ve used them once so far and loved the scent, although I definitely did not smell almonds. I’ve previously finished up lavender scented bath salts by the same brand, which you can see in my most recent Empties video.

Energie Fruit bain moussant en fraise l'exquise (free - gift)
Energie Fruit bain moussant en fraise l’exquise (free – gift)

Another present from my brother, and presumably from France as well since I’m totally unfamiliar with the brand. Fraise l’exquise de Energie Fruit is a shower gel that I’ve added to my collection but haven’t had the opportunity to use yet because I’m totally overwhelmed with all the shower gel I currently have in my linen closet, so this has essentially moved to the back of the lineup!

L'Occitane Pamplemousse + Rhubarbe shower gel (free - gift)
L’Occitane Pamplemousse + Rhubarbe shower gel (free – gift)

L’Occitane‘s Pamplemousse Rhubarbe (Grapefruit and Rhubarb) is a limited edition scent that my mom picked up for me in a shower gel (yep, into the closet it goes!) for Christmas. She knows I love anything grapefruit scented, and the rhubarb is a great addition to the scent!

Neutrogena Oil-Free Cleansing Wipes Pink Grapefruit (free - gift)
Neutrogena Oil-Free Cleansing Wipes Pink Grapefruit (free – gift)

Annnnd since she knows I love grapefruit so much, she also picked up a pack of Neutrogena grapefruit wipes for me. Made me laugh when I opened the package!

Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer (free - gift)
Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer (free – gift)

My mother in law gifted me this Jergens Wet Skin Moisturizer. I had heard about in-shower moisturizers (like the one by Nivea), but I had never tried them out. This one is slightly different in the sense that you apply it just after you’ve gotten out of the shower, but before you towel off. While it feels like a normal moisturizer, what’s cool to me is that unlike a normal moisturizer, this works with the moisture on your skin in order to hydrate your limbs. Usually if I apply a typical moisturizer to wet skin it slides right off – this one doesn’t! So after I’ve applied to my wet skin, I towel/pat myself try and I’m good to go. Really, really handy for quick moisturizing without having to worry about it needing to sink in for a lengthy period of time!

Burt's Bees Mango lip balm and Lemon Butter cuticle cream (free - gift)
Burt’s Bees Mango lip balm and Lemon Butter cuticle cream (free – gift)

One of the cute things my mother in law put in my stocking (hi Ruth!) are these Burt’s Bees items; a lip balm and a cuticle cream. She had read in my stocking stuffer guide (prior to Christmas) that my grandmother would typically put a Burt’s Bees lipbalm in my stocking, so she decided to keep the tradition going since we were in Wisconsin this year and not in Ottawa! Very sweet touch. 🙂

Chap Stick lip balm in Pumpkin Pie and Candy Cane (think I paid $3 USD for both)
Chap Stick lip balm in Pumpkin Pie and Candy Cane (think I paid $3 USD for both)

Sooo here in Canada, I’ve never seen Chap Stick in these cool scents. I’d seen plenty of American bloggers and YouTubers mention them, but they never seemed to be available in Canada. I need lip balm like I need more shower gel (which is to say not at all!), but I wanted these because I just can’t find them here! The Pumpkin Pie one is incredible (so, so nice to wear that one) and the Candy Cane one is as to be expected – very candy cane-like. Currently wishing I’d also picked up the Cake Batter one as well, but I think it would’ve been a little too sweet for my tastes.

LORAC Mega Pro 2 ($55 USD)
LORAC Mega Pro 2 ($55 USD)

Alright, here’s a biggie! My mother in law gave me some cash for my birthday and encouraged me to hit up Ulta while we were visiting. I needed no convincing and I knew exactly what I was going to pick up – the Lorac Mega Pro 2.

LORAC Mega Pro 2 ($55 USD)
LORAC Mega Pro 2 ($55 USD)

I had died a small death by not getting the original Mega Pro (RIP) and have been wanting to try Lorac eyeshadows out since then. What better way to do that than with an ENORMOUS palette? (I’m seriously dreading Swatch Sunday for this sucker… that’s a LOT of photos to edit.) I’m so happy to have this palette in my collection now. 🙂

Tree Hut Shea Sugar in Brazilian Nut ($7.49 USD each, was BOGO 50% off)
Tree Hut Shea Sugar in Brazilian Nut ($7.49 USD each, was BOGO 50% off)

Another thing I picked up from Ulta is the Tree Hut Shea Sugar Scrub in the Brazilian Nut scent. I’ve actually already finished one of these before and I knew I wanted more of them. Out of all of their scrubs, this is definitely my favourite scent.

NYX Micro Brow in Taupe ($9.99 USD)
NYX Micro Brow in Taupe ($9.99 USD)

While we now have NYX stores in Toronto, I hadn’t been able to get out there yet, so I picked up the very last NYX Micro-Brow in Taupe at Ulta while I was there. Love, love, love this brow pencil – it’s so much easier to use when I’m in a rush than say a pomade or the like. (I still love those too, they’re just not a product I want to dip into when I need to do my makeup quickly.)

Bite Beauty Juniper (Frozen Berries exclusive) - $24 USD
Bite Beauty Juniper (Frozen Berries exclusive) – $24 USD

This was such an impulse purchase and I’m still a little dazed and confused by it. I was inside a Sephora at JC Penney (holy smokes they have a lot more amazing sets there!) and noticed they still had a few shades left from the US-exclusive Frozen Berries collection by Bite Beauty. I picked up the shade Juniper because it’s a stunning shade… but on further reflection I already have this shade in a few other lipsticks! It’s not dissimilar to Kir Royale (also by Bite) and Too Faced Melted Berry. Did I need another lipstick in the exact same shade? NO! But now I own it and I feel kind of silly about it.

MAC - Full Fuchsia (free - gift)
MAC – Full Fuchsia (free – gift)

A few products from a generous friend here. She was at the MAC Warehouse sale a few months back (I think) and picked up this Full Fuchsia pan blush for me because it was super bright and she figured I’d like it. And I do! Soo pretty!

Maybelline - Luminous Lilacs (free - gift)
Maybelline – Luminous Lilacs (free – gift)

A new Maybelline quad in Luminous Lilacs. This looks like new packaging for the quads (to me anyway, I’m not overly familiar with their eyeshadows except for the ones that used to come in a chevron pattern) and I have yet to bust open this one!

The Body Shop Body Butter Trio (free - gift0
The Body Shop Body Butter Trio (free – gift0

Next up is a trio of The Body Shop body butters in their tiny size. She gifted me this because it has a tiny Satsuma one in there (and she knew my husband wasn’t a fan – haha!). There’s also a Strawberry and Mango one in there as well.

The Body Shop Frosted Cranberry Shimmer Lotion (free - gift)
The Body Shop Frosted Cranberry Shimmer Lotion (free – gift)

The next two items are freaking AWESOME! She also gifted me The Body Shop‘s Frosted Cranberry Shimmer Lotion! I had a small bottle of it last year but had used the whole thing up. This stuff is MAGIC. I love the scent, and it actually deposits very fine silver shimmer onto your skin. It’s not for everyone, but I love glitter all day, every day, so this is so, so nice to wear because it makes my skin gleam.

The Body Shop Frost Cranberry Shimmer Mist (free - gift)
The Body Shop Frost Cranberry Shimmer Mist (free – gift)

In addition to the shimmer lotion, she also handed me the shimmer mist (also in Frosted Cranberry). This is more of a bodyspray with fine shimmer in it, but I find the shimmer particles are not as strong as the shimmer lotion. Love the packaging too – it’s like a snowglobe!

Laura Geller set (free - gift)
Laura Geller set (free – gift)

The next two items are from my lovely friend Kat (well… her real name is Sara, but I call her Kat). We do a gift exchange at Christmas and she freaking spoiled me this year! She knew I had been lusting over the Laura Geller baked sorbet blush in Guava (Laura Geller is impossible to find in Canada), and not only did she find it, but she also managed to score it in an amazing set that came with a face primer, lip gloss and mascara. Unfortunately, the sparkly clutch it came in started shedding glitter particles everywhere so it’s not especially usable. The blush though… incredible. I’m so, so in love with it.

Lorac Unzipped Gold (free - gift)
Lorac Unzipped Gold (free – gift)

The other thing she spoiled me on is the Lorac Unzipped Gold palette. Kat had asked me what brands we didn’t have access to in Canada and Lorac was my first response since I didn’t have any of their palettes at the time she asked (of course then I went and bought the Mega Pro 2 above when I was in Wisconsin…).

Lorac Unzipped Gold (free - gift)
Lorac Unzipped Gold (free – gift)

The shades in this palette speak to me and I’ve heard Samantha Jane going on about it a lot so I knew it had to be mine!

Phew! That’s it for January! I’m sticking to a very minimal buying pattern for the next few months since I’m saving up for IMATS New York (Sugarpill EVERYTHING) in April. Luckily, I’ve also received a few Sephora gift cards so if I feel the need to splurge, I’ve got those in my back pocket! 😉
