Skinny Brow Pencils (Anastasia vs NYX vs Marcelle)

201508_skinnybrowpencils_anatasia_nyx_marcelle_shot1

I feel like the skinny brow pencil trend started with Anastasia‘s Brow Wiz. It seems like ever since the Brow Wiz came out, we’ve seen brand after brand attempt to replicate the amazingness of that skinny brow pencil. Over the last year or so, I’ve been able to try out a few brands with similar pencils and I thought I’d compare them to the original Anastasia Brow Wiz.

Dual ended skinny brow pencils
Dual ended skinny brow pencils

All of these skinny/micro brow pencils features a 1.5 mm twist up brow pencil and a spoolie. The tiny pencil point helps create natural looking brow hairs (if you’re skilled enough to create them! I’m not!) and gives you an accuracy unlike anything else I’ve tried. The spoolie is a lovely touch as it’ll help you comb out the product through your brow hairs if you happen to get a little too heavy-handed.

Unlike with pencils that require sharpening, these pencils twist up so you actually get to use all of the product. And due to the nature of their tiny diameter, you get accurate precision every time you use them.

Spoolies for everyone!
Spoolies for everyone!

Here’s how the three that I have stack up:

  • Anastasia Brow Wiz costs $27 for 0.085 grams of product. 8 shades available.
  • NYX Micro Brow Pencil costs $11.99 for 0.09 grams of product. 8 shades available.
  • Marcelle Nano Brow Pencil costs $11.95 for 0.09 grams of product. 5 shades available.

The first thing you notice is the huge price discrepancy between Anastasia and the other two pencils. NYX and Marcelle are less than HALF the price of the Anastasia one and come with slightly more product!

201508_skinnybrowpencils_anatasia_nyx_marcelle_swatches1

So what’s the difference, you’re probably asking. And aside from shade selection, there isn’t a whole lot. I have the shade Taupe in both Anastasia and NYX, and Ash Blond in Marcelle. As you can see in the paper swatches above, the Marcelle one is slightly lighter than the other two.

201508_skinnybrowpencils_anatasia_nyx_marcelle_swatches2

On the skin, the Anastasia and NYX shades perform identically. They seem to have the same pigment and wax combination. The Marcelle leans more towards pigment and less towards wax. Interestingly, the Ash Blond shade comes out a lot more grey on my skin than it did on the paper swatch.

I know I'm wearing one of the pencils mentioned in this post on my brows here, but I couldn't even tell you which one because they all look the same!
I know I’m wearing one of the pencils mentioned in this post on my brows here, but I couldn’t even tell you which one because they all look the same!

But really, you’re asking, how do they wear? Is there a clear winner?

And the great answer is, there really ISN’T a winner! On the brows, all three products wear exactly the same. They have the same longevity (easily 12+ hours) and apply in an identical manner. When it comes down to it, it’s up to you to choose where you want to spend your money. You can either opt for the cheaper drug store option (although NYX is harder to find in Canada than Marcelle) or go for the more expensive Anastasia one if that’s more your style. I’ve been using all three brow products interchangeably and I really do not notice a difference in them at all!

The Marcelle Nano Brow Pencil was sent to me for consideration.

What’s On My Face – Volume 40

In my (not so humble) opinion, there’s some pretty epic makeup looks in this post. Either I love how my makeup turned out, or I love how the shots came out. I hope you like them too!

201508_womf40_look2-2

Let’s start this off with what I feel is probably my best makeup look accomplished to date. (So I’m going to post a few extra shots of it because I’m really pleased with how this turned out.)

201508_womf40_look2-1

We were going to the pub to watch the Womens’ World Cup final (USA versus Japan), and since my husband is American, I defaulted to supporting the USA. It was so close to the Fourth of July too, so this could’ve doubled as an Independence Day theme as well.

201508_womf40_look2-3

I don’t always post huge eye shots because I typically take photos of my makeup before work and don’t have the time to perfect everything. Smaller photos hide some mistakes so I have less to worry about. But when I do guest posts, or feature products specifically, I like to make sure that I get as close to a perfect makeup look as I’m physically capable of (since I don’t airbrush my photos). But this one, despite being done in a relative rush, was done soooo well that I just had to post a full-sized shot!

201508_womf40_look2-4

And here’s what I used:

201508_womf40_look2-5

Eyes

  1. MAC Cork through the top of the crease.
  2. MAC Crystal Avalanche all over the lid.
  3. Urban Decay Heroine on the outer half of the lid.
  4. MAC Blanc Type on the brow bone.

I then patted MAC‘s Transparent Blue Glitter on top of the whole lid using Too Faced‘s Glitter Glue to make sure it stayed in place. I then used MAC‘s Strike While Haute shadow all along the bottom lash line, and applied MAC Reflect Red glitter overtop (again with the Glitter Glue).

The winged liner was done with Kat Von D‘s Tattoo Liner in Trooper and I lined my lower water line with Marc JacobsBlacquer. I applied a coat of CoverGirl‘s Clump Crusher mascara and then popped on a pair of Bombshell lashes by House of Lashes.

Rest of the Face

Next up is a product I waited far, FAR too long to use. It had been sitting in my “to use” pile but I never got around to it. And as soon as I did, I wore it three times that week! That beautiful neon red? That’s Kryolan‘s UV-Red pressed shadow and it is INCREDIBLE. Since it is a neon, it does need a sticky white base to make it pop. But damn… seriously amazing.

201508_womf40_look5-2

Eyes
I first applied NYX‘s Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencil in Milk to the entire lid, blended it out, then:

  1. Applied Kryolan‘s UV-Red to the entire lid of my eye and the inner tearduct.
  2. Makeup Geek‘s Corrupt was used through the outer third of the lid, through the crease and on the lower lash line.

I created the wing with Kat Von D‘s Tattoo Liner in Trooper, coated my lashes with CoverGirl‘s Clump Crusher and then put on a pair of Bombshell lashes by House of Lashes. I tightlined both waterlines with Marc Jacobs‘ Blacquer.

I swear this is such a vain post, but anyway… That shot on the left is my favourite shot of myself I think I’ve ever taken. It’s all thick lash line, fiery eyeshadow, chubby cheeks and intense steel blue eyes. AND I LOVE IT. I did this for a guest post on Vancouver Eyeshadow Addict back in May and somehow forgot to cross post it!

Eyes

  1. Makeup Geek Peach Smoothie through the top of the crease.

  5. Naked Cosmetics IV-04 pigment on the inner corner.

I used Poppy on the outer corner of the lower lash line and used Chickadee for the remainder of the lower lash line. I then created the wing with Kat Von D Tattoo Liner inTrooper and tightlined with Urban Decay‘s Black Velvet liner. On my lashes is essence‘s Lash Princess mascara.

What’s On My Face – Volume 39

Another makeup roundup! I had a backlog of looks I hadn’t posted yet, some even from early May. I’m surprised I had such a backlog (and there’s still about 7 more looks on my harddrive) because it feels like I haven’t been that inspired lately (aside from Clarins’ Aquatic Treasures collection, holy smokes) but it seems my memory was just rather faulty.

201507_womf39_look5-1

And we’re starting off with a BANG! This is my absolute favourite of the whole lot. Neon? Orange? Chartreuse? YES PLEASE! I wore this out briefly to a brunch during Pride and loved every second of it.

201507_womf39_look5-2

Eyes
(using the Makeup Revolution Redemption Acid Brights palette – total knockoff for theSleek Acid palette) I first applied a white base to my lid (NYX Jumbo Pencil in Milk), then:

  1. Yellow on the inner half of the lid.
  2. Orange on the outer half of the lid.
  3. Purple shade on the outer corner and on the lower lash line.
  4. Pinky-purple through the crease.
  5. Wet n Wild Brule on the brow bone.

I used MAC‘s Blacktrack fluidline to create the wing and applied Make Up For Ever‘sSmoky Stretch mascara to my lashes.

201507_womf39_look4-1

I have a bucket full of makeup that is stuff I have yet to use. Most of it is stuff from swaps, or samples from Sephora (including their 100 point perks), so every now and then I make an effort to go into it and pull out items that I REALLY should at least try before I put away into the depths of my makeup collection. The main star of this look is a L’Oreal Infallible eyeshadow I picked up at a CBB swap.

201507_womf39_look4-2

Eyes

  1. L’Oreal Infallible shadow in Endless Sea all over the lid.
  2. MAC Sketch on the outer corner and through the crease.
  3. MAC Dazzlelight on the brow bone.

On my lashes is Make Up For Ever Smoky Stretch.

Rest of the Face

201507_womf39_look3-1

I had always thought this lip colour (Too Faced‘s Bon Bon) was too awkwardly bright for me. That’s not to say that I don’t love bright lip colours, but this seemed to look so weird on my skin when I didn’t have a bit of a tan. I love it so much more now that I’ve got a bit of colour on my skin! Anyway, the basis for this look was that I really wanted to wear MAC‘sPetal Power blush and tried to figure out a look that would work with it. Quite pleased with the results!

201507_womf39_look3-2

Eyes
(all Makeup Geek)

  1. Peach Smoothie through the crease.
  2. Starry Eyed on the inner half of the lid.
  3. Goddess on the outer half of the lid.

I created the wing with MAC‘s Blacktrack fluidline and applied Make Up For Ever Smoky Stretch to my lashes.

What’s On My Face – Volume 38

My makeup’s been getting more and more vibrant as we’re getting into the warmer months – there isn’t neutral look in this whole post! Enjoy. 🙂

201506_womf38_look3-1

Um yes. So much yes. Not dissimilar to another look I’ve done recently (also using Makeup Geek shadows) but I love the extra pop of reddish orange shadow through the crease.

201506_womf38_look3-2

Eyes
(all Makeup Geek)

  1. Untamed on inner half of the lid.
  2. Masquerade on the outer half of the lid.
  3. Poppy through the crease.
  4. Vanilla Bean on the brow bone.
  5. Rapunzel on the inner corner.

I tightlined my upper and lower lashlines with Urban Decay‘s Black Velvet liner, created the wing with MAC‘s Blacktrack fluidline and applied Make Up For Ever Smoky Stretchmascara to my lashes.

Rest of the Face

  • Bronzer: Hard Candy Hula Hula
  • Blush: I have no idea, I didn’t write it down 🙁 At a guess… maybe Tarte’s Charisma because I’m not sure what else I’d try to pair with this look.
  • Lips: Revlon Papaya gloss

201506_womf38_look1-1

Playing around with one of Wet n Wild‘s Silverlake palettes. I’m not a massive fan of frosty blue-green shades, but this turned out decently enough.

201506_womf38_look1-2

Eyes
(all Wet n Wild shades from the Vegan Culture palette)

  1. Light green on the inner half of the lid.
  2. Bright teal shade on the center of the lid.
  3. Dark green through the crease.
  4. Frosty white shade (lightly!) on the brow bone.

I used the silver shade to line the lower lash line. I created the wing with MAC‘s Blacktrackfluidline and applied Make Up For Ever Smoky Stretch mascara to my lashes.

Rest of the Face

  • Bronzer: Hard Candy Hula Hula
  • Blush: MAC Ripe Peach
  • Highlighter: MAC Soft & Gentle
  • Lips: Rimmel Apocalips in Nude Eclipse

201506_womf38_look5-1

Holy CRAP. I wasn’t expecting this Lise Watier Aurora shadow in Violet to come out this intensely. I’m not sure the photographs show it, but there’s a slight reddish tinge to the shade too which adds a lovely dimension.201506_womf38_look5-2

Eyes
I first covered my lid in NYX‘s Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencil in Black Bean, blended it out, then applied:

  1. Lise Watier Aurora shadow in Violet over the entire lid and blended through the crease. I first applied it dry, then dunked my brush in water and applied it wet on top.
  2. MAC Dazzlelight on the browbone.
  3. Naked Cosmetics IV-03 on the inner corner.

I used Marc Jacobs‘ Highliner gel crayon in Blaquer to tightline my upper waterline. On my lashes is Make Up For Ever Smoky Stretch.

Rest of the Face

  • Foundation: Boots No7 Instant Radiance in Cool Vanilla
  • Bronzer: Hard Candy Hula Hula
  • Blush: Hourglass Diffused Heat
  • Highlighter: Make Up For Ever Pro Sculpting Duo #1
  • Lips: Rimmel Apocalips in Celestial

201506_womf38_look2-1

Another Wet n Wild Silverlake palette! I wasn’t expecting this one to cause such a bang on my lids. It looks like such a soft, innocuous palette but I really managed to make it pop!

201506_womf38_look2-2

Eyes
(all Wet n Wild Thrift Store Chic palette)

  1. Hot pink shade all over the lid.
  2. Burgundy/pink shade in the outer corner and crease.
  3. Pale cream shade on the browbone.
  4. Sparkly beige-pink shade on the inner corner.

I created the wing with MAC‘s Blacktrack fluidline and applied essence Lash Princessmascara to my lashes.

  • Blush: once again… forgot to write it down… what the hell
  • Highlighter: MAC Soft & Gentle
  • Lips: Wet n Wild Cherry Picking

201506_womf38_look4-1

I’ve found myself drawn back to my MAC shadows lately… probably because I feel like I’ve been neglecting them (I blame Makeup Geek).

201506_womf38_look4-2

Eyes

  1. MAC Vellum all over the lid.
  2. MAC Dame’s Desire on the outer corner and through the crease.
  3. MAC Blackberry on the outer corner to deepen it up.
  4. Wet n Wild Brule on the browbone.

On my lashes is Sephora‘s Purple mascara.

Travel Makeup Bag: 2015 Ottawa Race Weekend

201505_travelmakeupbag_ottawa1

I’m taking a(nother) long weekend this coming one to head to Ottawa for Race Weekend.Last year I did the 5k, and this year I’m going back for the half marathon which my father will also be running! And what’s a weekend away if not to bring along some makeup products I want to get better acquainted with?

Soap & Glory Lid Stuff in What’s Nude and NARS dup in Mediteranee
Soap & Glory Lid Stuff in What’s Nude and NARS dup in Mediteranee

I’m only bringing along two small eyeshadow palettes because I find I never reach for these on a day to day basis, often opting for my larger palettes. The more neutral toned palette is Soap & Glory‘s Lid Stuff in What’s Nude and the NARS duo is Mediteranee (and the orange in that duo is everything). It won’t make for especially enthralling makeup looks while on vacation, but it’ll be fun for me to play with these shadows a bit more.

Too Faced Melted Coral and Boots No7 Sweet Copper
Too Faced Melted Coral and Boots No7 Sweet Copper

Two options for lips here, and I’m sure this is probably overkill for four days, but anyway…Too Faced Melted Coral (more orange than coral really) and Boots No7 Sweet Copper. They’re both on the orangey-side of things, but I’m okay with that.

essence blush up! in Heat Wave and Hard Candy Hula Hula
essence blush up! in Heat Wave and Hard Candy Hula Hula

I love that ombre blushes give me the option between two colours in one compact (and a third if you swirl them together), so I’m bringing along essence‘s Heat Wave. My bronzer of choice lately has been Hard Candy‘s Hula Hula. I just can’t get enough of how golden and bronzey this makes my face.

The usual (boring) suspects
The usual (boring) suspects

And all the bits and bobs that finish my looks off:

  • I’m giving my Milani eyeshadow primer time to fully prove itself to me.
  • MAC‘s Prep + Prime for lips because I can’t live without it.
  • Urban Decay‘s Black Velvet liner predominantly for tightlining (if it even comes to that).
  • Benefit Watts Up because it’s tiny, compact and packs a punch for highlighting my cheekbones.
  • NYX Micro brow pencil in Taupe
  • Make Up For Ever Smoky Stretch mascara (the love affair continues!).
  • essence‘s 2-in-1 liner because I’ve got a review coming up and I want to make sure I put this to the test.

And in looking at this stuff… jeez is it ever boring. I think next time I go somewhere I need to bring stuff that’s wayyyy more interesting to post about! Anyyyyyway, wish me luck on my half! My fingers are crossed that it’ll be cool, even slightly rainy on Sunday!
