Drugstore Foundation Roundup

20131118_foundation_roundup

I’ll start this off by saying I still feel like I’m an extreme rookie when it comes to foundation. I often feel I have no concept as to what colour actually matches my  skin tone. A lot of what I say is going to be based on what professionals at MAC, Sephora or Boots have said to me. At MAC, depending on who I speak to, I’ve been told I’m either NC20 or NW20 (I do get pointed towards NW20 more often though). My veins appear blue, which means I have a cool undertone. One of the most important thing to note in the following swatches are that these are all done on the underside of my arm which is pretty darn pale. The underside of my arm does not match my face, nor does it even match tops of my arms, so keep that in mind as you’re comparing the colours to my skin. I tried swatching on my jaw line but it just made for incredibly awkward pictures.

Things to note about my skin:

  • At MAC I’m in the NW20/NC20 colour range.
  • My skin is not overly oily, however I do get occasional shiny patches. If I do get oily patches, I don’t generally try to powder it down as I don’t find them particularly blinding!
  • My veins appear blue, which means I have a cool undertone.
  • I don’t wear foundation every day as I don’t have anything to really cover up. A few occasional red patches where I pick at my skin, but I don’t need to cover acne or anything of the like. For me, foundation evens out skin tone.

On with the swatches! Prices are marked with the appropriate currency to the country in which I bought the foundation.

Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum in 51 Light Vanilla (~€14)
Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum in 51 Light Vanilla (~€14)

While in Ireland in May, I picked up the Bourjois Healthy Mix + Serum foundation in shades51 (Light Vanilla) and 52 (Vanilla). I’d heard many a good thing about this foundation and wanted to give it a try. The first thing that has to be said about this foundation is that it smells amazing. Putting this on your face is an absolute pleasure – it smells refreshingly like berries! The consistency is rather thin, although it does have somewhat of a gel-like texture which I suppose is the “serum” effect they refer to in the name. Shade 51 is too light for my complexion at the moment (even though in the swatch above it looks damn near perfect), so I’m hoping my skin pales out enough throughout the winter to be able to use it pure. If not, I’ll mix it with a darker foundation to get a better colour match.

Also worth noting is that this comes with a pump. I can’t tell you how invaluable pumps are for foundation. Nothing is worse than a bottle with an open end (I’m looking at youRevlon Colorstay!). I do find this gets patchy/wears away pretty quickly so the lasting power isn’t amazing.

Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum in 52 Vanilla (~€14)
Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum in 52 Vanilla (~€14)

Right now this shade (52 Vanilla) seems perfect for my skin. It blends in smoothly and evenly. As with the shade I mentioned above, this is a really liquid consistency that feels really refreshing on the skin despite not having a very long wear time. It’s perfect for those who don’t like the feeling of overly thick foundations.

No7 instant Radiance Foundation in Cool Vanilla (~€16)
No7 Instant Radiance Foundation in Cool Vanilla (~€16)

No7 Instant Radiance foundation in Cool Vanilla is the foundation I feel the most comfortable wearing, which probably has to do with it being the foundation shade I was colour matched to in Boots. I’m never QUITE sure if a foundation matches me, so having a laser gun tell me my perfect shade eases a lot of my worry. I was colour matched in Ireland in May, so I had a partial tan at the time as it had already been quite warm in Canada by that point. This is the ONLY foundation I’ve worn where someone has commented on how amazing my skin looked. I will admit that it looks dark in the bottle, but it certainly doesn’t appear that intense on my face.

This also comes with a pump – therefore I love it. There is a faint “cosmetic” scent to the product, but it’s not offensive. Lasting power is quite good as it will endure an entire work day without issue.

Revlon Colorstay Foundation in 220 Natural Beige (Combination/Oily) (~$20 CAD)
Revlon Colorstay Foundation in 220 Natural Beige (Combination/Oily) (~$20 CAD)

I had a bit of a love hate relationship with this foundation. Revlon Colorstay was the first liquid foundation I ever bought after hearing it recommended over and over again for being one of the best drugstore foundations ever. I took a leap of faith with the shade (220 Natural Beige) and it worked out decently well, though I do find this shade tends to run quite pink. This isn’t a shade I can wear during the dead of winter – it’s more an early summer and early fall shade (as my tan is both coming in and going out).

The first time I wore it I wasn’t loving it – it has a rather offensive paint-like scent (although you cannot smell it once it’s on your skin) and it dried down incredibly quickly, which wasn’t something I was used to. I gave up  on this foundation for a while then went back to it to force myself to finish the bottle… only to find that I suddenly LOVED the stuff. The coverage is intense – it will block out almost anything on your face and give you a flawless surface. It can appear quite artificial if you pack it on, so go lightly and build up a second layer if you really need it (I didn’t). It can feel rather tight if you’re not used to wearing foundation. Since the coverage is so heavy, it can look slightly artificial at times, which is why I tend to prefer how it looks after an hour or two of wear time once it’s had a chance to settle into your skin

I only wish this had a pump. I’ve read that some countries do have Colorstay in a pump, but I have yet to see that here in Canada!

Revlon Colorstay Foundation in 150 Buff (Combination/Oily) (~$20 CAD)
Revlon Colorstay Foundation in 150 Buff (Combination/Oily) (~$20 CAD)

Just a paler shade of Revlon Colorstay that I anticipate wearing in the winter. This shade (150 Buff) shade leans more yellow than 220 Natural Beige and is also significantly lighter.

Revlon Colorstay Whipped Creme Foundation in 220 Nude (~$11 USD)
Revlon Colorstay Whipped Creme Foundation in 220 Nude (~$11 USD)

Ugh. This Revlon Colorstay Whipped Creme foundation (in 220 Nude) vexes me. First off, the number is the same as the Natural Beige shade in the normal liquid version and yet the shades have completely different names and are not similar at all. I bought this hoping it would be slightly paler than the liquid 220 Natural Beige shade – it’s definitely not, it’s darker!

I wore this throughout the summer as it was the darkest foundation I had and while it matched well enough, it was just never, ever comfortable to wear. Maybe it’s just because it was a cream foundation in the middle of a warm summer, but it just never felt like it completely settled into my skin. It really just felt like it sat on top of my skin. I forced myself to finish it, but I won’t purchase this one again. (And honestly, it has turned me off all cream foundations altogether now.) Also annoying is that despite it being in a rather cute tub, it was frustrating getting the product out. I resorted to using a cotton bud to remove the foundation, placed it one the back of my hand, and then dabbed my brush onto the back of my hand to pick up product.

Covergirl & Olay Tone Rehab 2 in 1 Foundation – CC Cream in 110 Classic Ivory (~$20 CAD)
Covergirl & Olay Tone Rehab 2 in 1 Foundation – CC Cream in 110 Classic Ivory (~$20 CAD)

Covergirl‘s attempt at a CC Cream is a bit of a laugh. The actual tube doesn’t say anywhere on it that it’s a CC Cream… except for the sticker at the top which looks like it was added as an afterthought once the CC Cream craze started up in the beauty world. As far as I can see, it doesn’t actually have any CC Cream properties: there’s no colour correction properties to it and there’s no SPF. So let’s just forget it’s even labeled a CC Cream and move on. I’ve been wearing 110 Classic Ivory more lately to get a feel for it and I will say that it is an incredibly matte foundation. The colour match is quite good for me as we’re headed into the winter, but it does tend to feel a bit drying as I progressed throughout the day. I would recommend wearing a decent moisturizer underneath this foundation. And thumbs up for the pump!

MUA BB Cream in Light (~£4 GBP)
MUA BB Cream in Light (~£4 GBP)

MUA‘s BB Cream was cheap as chips and it doesn’t disappoint. It does feel rather thick, so go easy when you squeeze it out. The first time I applied it I definitely used too much and with the shade being too pale for me at the moment (man, I feel like I keep saying that!) it made me look rather ghostly. The dry down on this product is nice – you’ve got plenty of time to blend it into your skin and it just looks *nice*. To the touch it’s even rather soft. Love the squeezy tube and the nozzle end.

MUA Matte Foundation in Shade 1 Soft Sand (~£2 GBP)
MUA Matte Foundation in Shade 1 Soft Sand (~£2 GBP)

MUA‘s Matte foundation is actually rather impressive. Not only is it incredibly cheap but it also has a nozzle end – a feature which I find to be an incredibly smart alternative to a pump. As a whole, the packaging on this one is rather awesome: It contains an ounce of foundation (typical for foundations) but it’s a flexible, soft tube with a nozzle. It’s compact and perfect for travelling, which makes it pretty ideal. I don’t find it holds up throughout the day as well as Revlon Colorstay, for example, but the cost of this foundation offsets just about every downside to that.

Here are all the foundations swatched side by side on the underside of my arm in indirect sunlight. As mentioned at the top of this post, my face has been colour matched to NW20 at MAC which is darker than my arm.

Those are all my foundations! I hoped the colours and swatches help you out if you were looking information and comparisons. Is there a foundation out there that you think I’d like? I’ll admit to never having owned a high end foundation so I’m sure that’s something I’ll be looking into at some point!

Weekly Makeup Looks

More looks for you to peruse! I need to find a better title for this series. Maybe numbering them as I go? Hmmm….

20131113wavesofwhite

A night out look using my favourite glitter, Reflects: Transparent Teal!

Base: Urban Decay Primer Potion in Original

Eyeshadows: I applied the Maybelline Color Tattoo in Waves of White to the entire lid (do this in thin layers or the product can end up looking a bit bizarre). I then used MAC Contrast in the outer corner and blended it slightly into the crease, taking it about halfway across my lid. MAC Brule was used to highlight the brow.

And now for the fun part! I applied a thin layer of Too Faced Glitter Glue over the lid colour, waited for it to go tacky (keep your eyes shut while you do this or you’ll transfer the glue everywhere!), and then patted MAC Reflects: Transparent Teal onto the glue. A word of warning: Use this glue in thin layers otherwise the glitter is likely to crease.

I also smudged the Color Tattoo along the lower lashline with a hint of Contrast at the outer edge.

Liner: MAC Midnight Blues fluidline

Mascara: CoverGirl Clump Crusher in Very Black (water resistant) on the upper and lower lashes.

Lashes: Ardell 102 Demis

Eyebrows: MAC Omega

Lips: Nothing!

Cheeks: Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Blissful

Bronzer: Hard Candy Hula Hula

Foundation: Revlon Colorstay in 220 Natural Beige

20131113maybellinecopy

Have to give credit where credit’s due on this one and the lovely Emily Noel of Beauty Broadcast is responsible for this gorgeous combination. This look involves the limited edition Maybelline quad in “Smokey Cinnamon” from their Fall 2012 collection. I have worn this look many times since I first saw her video and will continue to do so.

Base: Urban Decay Primer Potion in Original as the bottom layer. Maybelline Color Tattoos in Barely Beige (inner half of the lid) and Mossy Green (outer half of the lid). You don’t need to worry about blending the Color Tattoos as the eyeshadows will cover them up. I smudged Mossy Green under the lower lashline.

Eyeshadows: Using Maybelline‘s Smokey Cinnamon quad, I applied the very lightest beige shade to the inner third of the lid, the pale green to the center of the lid, and then finally the dark green to the outer corner. The light green will do a good job of blending together the Color Tattoos underneath.

Finally, I applied the brown colour in the palette into the crease to blend all the shadows together and create a nice fade to the brow. I think used MAC‘s Brule as a brow highlight.

Liner: MAC Blacktrack fluidline

Mascara:  CoverGirl Clump Crusher in Very Black (water resistant) on the upper and lower lashes.

Lips: Nothing!

Cheeks: Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Darling (from the Off the Cuff palette)

Bronzer: Revlon Photoready in Bronzed & Chic

Eyebrows: MAC Omega

Foundation: Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Gel Foundation in 52 Vanilla

20131113kikoliner

The point of this look was to test out a new KIKO eyeliner I had and to create a dark outer corner without bringing the shadow in too close to the center of the lid.

Base: Urban Decay Primer Potion in Original

Eyeshadows: (All MACI first applied Shroom all over the lid, right up to the brow. Using a little bit of Print, I smudged the shadow into the outer corner of the lid. Unfortunately, it looked a little bit too stark, so I swept Haux into the crease to give my hooded eyes some definition.

Liner: The star of the show! I used KIKO Twinkle Eye Pencil in 06 to line my upper lashline with a very slight wing at the outer edge.

I cannot say enough good things about this eye pencil! It didn’t budge and the sparkles within the liner never fell onto my cheeks throughout the entire work day. If anyone remembers the original Hard Candy line (not the one currently in Walmart, even though it has the same name they are definitely NOT the same products) this pencil is near identical to the glitter liner they used to have in Cyber. I loved that pencil so much when I was in my teens, but with Hard Candy being completely redone as a company, that pencil is no longer in production. The other bonus is thatCyber had very definite fallout whereas the KIKO product does not!

Mascara: CoverGirl Clump Crusher in Very Black (water resistant) on the upper lashes.

20131113infallibles

L’Oreal‘s Infallible eyeshadow in Golden Mahogany is a shade that I cannot even express how much the colour astonishes me. It’s a bit of a shame that the colour doesn’t pick up on camera quite as well as I see it with my eyes, but it’s a vibrant ruddy, rustic browned-red colour. It’s one of those shades that I actually gasped when I first swatched it. It seems that Golden Mahogany was a Canadian exclusive shade.

Base: Urban Decay Primer Potion in Original

Eyeshadows: I patted L’Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow in Golden Mahogany over the entire lid and then blended it with another brush through the crease. I then applied another L’Oreal Infallible in Burning Black (that’s Smoldering Plum for those of you in the US) into the outer corner but did not carry it into the crease. MAC Shroom was used to highlight the brow. I also used Golden Mahogany on the outer half of the lower lashline.

Liner: MAC Blacktrack fluidline

Mascara: CoverGirl Clump Crusher in Very Black (water resistant) on the upper lashes.

20131113heatelement

Hands down this is my favourite MAC mineralize eyeshadow (duo) ever.

Base: Urban Decay Primer Potion in Original

Eyeshadows: (All MAC) This is a super easy one. Spritz Fix+ (or water!) on a brush, then apply the lighter shade in the mineralize eyeshadow duo in Heat Element to the inner half of the lid and the copper (darker) shade to the outer half of the lid. I repeated this on the lower lashline with a smaller brush. Brule was used as a brow highlight and to blend out the upper crease.

Mascara: CoverGirl Clump Crusher in Very Black (water resistant) on the upper and lower lashes.

And that’s my latest roundup of looks I’ve been sporting!

Product Empties – November 2013

Come with me, will you, while we rummage through my trash!

Bioderma Sensibio H20 – Solution Micellaire
Bioderma Sensibio H20 – Solution Micellaire

Quite an amped up product in the beauty community. I bought this bottle of Bioderma last year and expected miracles out of it. What I got was basically an overhyped makeup remover that didn’t work on waterproof cosmetics as far as I could see. I ended up using this to clean up makeup mistakes and occasionally to remove oil residue from my face (read: after I’d used my other oil based makeup remover to actually remove my makeup). It does work very well for removing lip products, but the taste of this product is so bitter that it made me not want to use it to remove lipstick. For what it did for me, it wasn’t worth the cost. It’s definitely not a bad product, but it just didn’t work as efficiently as my usual makeup remover (Marcelle  Eye Makeup Remover – oil based).

MAC Pearlglide Intense Eyeliner in Undercurrent
MAC Pearlglide Intense Eyeliner in Undercurrent

You might be asking why does this pencil look so jacked up, especially since it hasn’t been sharpened all the way down to the very nub. Well, the pencil itself is about two years old, and the last time I used it it was becoming harder and harder to apply to my eye. In my infinite wisdom I thought I’d McGyver the crap out of the pencil – melt it down into a little pot and then nuke it in the microwave to soften it up.

This is not what happened.

In the end I succeeded in burning my fingers and burning the product (the actual pencil caught on fire, I kid you not). By the time I got anything out of the pencil, after having smeared most of it on my hands, I had a very hard lump of burnt eyeliner sitting in a tub. By the time it had cooled, the product was so rock hard that I gave up hope and threw it out. Sigh.

That being said? MAC‘s Undercurrent eyeliner is the best eyeliner I have ever owned. It took 2 or more  years to dry out, but it was a beautiful colour that almost melted onto the lids when applied. The teal colour of the pencil was shot through with glitter that didn’t flake off. I will definitely buy this particular liner again.

MAC C-Thru Lipglass
MAC C-Thru Lipglass

I love this lipglass. This is the second tube of C-Thru I’ve finished. There was a bit left, but the scent had started to go off and I didn’t want to risk wearing it any longer. On me, it gives a bit of a milky texture to the lips. It definitely sinks into my liplines and does a nice job of blanking out my lips – I’m aware this sounds utterly unappealing, but I really do like the pale look it gives my lips, particularly when I’m wearing a very intense dark eyeshadow look.

MAC Prep + Prime for Lips
MAC Prep + Prime for Lips

This stuff is AMAZING. I was continually having problems with lipsticks bleeding outside my lip line no matter what I did. Liner, blotting, powder blotting, lip liner brush, edging my lip line with concealer… you name it, I tried it. Frustrated, I finally asked someone at MAC for help and they pointed me towards their Prep + Prime for Lips. I was very skeptical, but I used it with Russian Red the next day and it didn’t budge. I now use it every time I wear lipstick and will never be without it!

As a tip, when I apply this, I apply it not only to my lips, but also slightly outside my lipline so that I fill in any fine lines around my lips that I may have. I also make sure to wait until the product feels tacky on my lips (about 60 seconds after application) and then I apply my lip colour. I find this works a lot better than applying lipstick right after I’ve applied the primer as it hasn’t been given a chance to go tacky yet.

MAC Fix+
MAC Fix+

I’m trying to think what I actually feel about this product and I’m kind of stumped. MAC Fix+ is okay, but it’s not amazing (I’m sure some people are shaking their heads sadly at me right now). I normally spritzed this on my face after I’d applied all my makeup to “soften things up”. Did it work? Maybe. But it also could make my skin look a little too dewy. I also used it to apply mineral eyeshadows or pigments and it will definitely intensify the colour of the shadows… but water does the exact same thing. A lot of people swear by this, but I personally haven’t repurchased it again.

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion in Original
Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion in Original

Despite being into makeup as far back as I can remember, I had never used an eyeshadow primer until roughly 4 years ago. I couldn’t believe what I was missing out on! Suddenly my eyeshadow was no longer creasing by mid-day! Urban Decay’s Primer Potion was the first one I bought and still the only one I’ve used that I like. (I gave a MAC Paint Pot a shot, but that sucker creased on me pretty quickly.) I am curious to try out Too Faced‘s version, but I’ve been so happy with UD that I’ve been hesitant to even try. The tube above was probably my fourth tube and I already have another one already opened in my collection. For anyone interested, if I apply makeup 5-6 times a week, the tube will last me an entire year!

Revlon Colorstay – Combination/Oil – 220 Natural Beige
Revlon Colorstay – Combination/Oil – 220 Natural Beige

I had an odd relationship with this foundation. At first I hated Revlon Colorstay. It smelled like paint thinner, it felt awkward on my face (although it must be said that when I bought this, it was one of the first foundations I ever owned, so I was not accustomed to wearing foundation frequently) and I wasn’t really sure it was the right colour for my skin. And I’m still not sure it’s the right shade, but no one’s ever said to me it looked odd on my face. I eventually started to experiment with other foundations and stopped using this one… until I realized I still had a lot left in the bottle and I had better get to finishing it.

And suddenly, it was like the product was completely transformed. I suddenly LOVED Colorstay! The shade 220 Natural Beige was definitely not dark enough for the summer months on my tanned skin, but it was good for late spring and early fall as my tan started to fade. I loved the texture on my skin and I loved that it would hold up throughout an entire day. Compared to the other foundations I had started to experiment with, this was like pure gold!

I’ve since bought a lighter shade for the winter months but I’m not quite pale enough for it yet.

Revlon Colorstay Whipped Creme Foundation in 220 Nude
Revlon Colorstay Whipped Creme Foundation in 220 Nude

This Whipped Creme foundation on the other hand, vexed me. First of all, why is THIS foundation called “220 Nude” whereas the one I just finished above, the liquid version, is called 220 Natural Beige. WHY DOES THE SAME NUMBER HAVE A DIFFERENT SHADE NAME? And there *is* a Natural Beige in the Whipped Creme formula, but it’s number 240! It doesn’t make any sense and it’s just confusing for consumers.

I bought 220 Nude last year while visiting a friend (and attending her wedding!) in the US before the product was commercially available in Canada. After much internet research, I settled on this particular shade because I thought it was lighter than 220 – Natural Beige (in the normal liquid version of Colorstay). In the end, I think it’s actually a tad darker and I ended up wearing it throughout the summer. I’m not even sure why I bothered to finish the product, as I didn’t particularly enjoy it although it did have good lasting power. It just didn’t compared to the liquid version I loved so much I suppose. I’m glad I tried it, but I won’t be getting it again.

L’Oreal Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base
L’Oreal Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base

The sticker is gone from the product as I intended to reuse the jar for something else before I thought to throw it in my “Empties” bin, but this is L’Oreal‘s Magic Perfecting Base. It’s not exactly a primer, as it doesn’t actually say it is, but it is supposed to facilitating foundation application. This is one of those products where I really have to wonder if it actually helped with my application. Overall, I’d say no, BUT I did find that it seems to do a pretty good job of smoothing out my pores. I would apply it with my fingertips and smooth it over my skin and it really did feel nice to apply it. That being said, it’s an expensive product and it didn’t do enough to my skin to warrant repurchasing.

Physicians Formula Happy Booster Bronzer in Light
Physicians Formula Happy Booster Bronzer in Light

I *loved* this product. Physicians Formula Happy Booster Bronzer in Light was absolutely fantastic on my skin. It was a light tan shade with a slight (VERY slight) silver glow to it and it smelled of lavender. Since all of my other bronzers with shimmer in them are a decidedly golden shimmer, this felt very unique to me. I’m browsing Physicians Formula’s site right now and it doesn’t look like they carry this product anymore. 🙁

Lush A Million Kisses Lip Tint
Lush A Million Kisses Lip Tint

I received this as freebie from my mother who didn’t like it that much. I tried it once, twice, and then emptied the thing out of the container so I can return it to Lush later (for a free face mask). A Million Kisses tastes absolutely awful to me. The colour it gives the lips is quite pretty and I wish I could get over the scent/taste, but I can’t, and there’s no way I was going to ever finish that little tub.

Bath & Body Works Warm Vanilla Sugar Triple Moisture Body Cream
Bath & Body Works Warm Vanilla Sugar Triple Moisture Body Cream

This is my second tube of B&BW‘s Warm Vanilla Sugar in the Triple Moisture Body Cream version. I prefer this over the regular lotion that comes in a different bottle as that one feels too liquidy to me. This cream is thick and smooths into the skin nicely. The scent also has pretty good lasting power, so if you put clothes on right after you’ve applied this product, be aware that it will linger for quite a while – probably into the next day! Will definitely repurchase this at some point.

Lush It’s Raining Men Shower Gel
Lush It’s Raining Men Shower Gel

For me, this is a much better choice when compared to Lush‘s Honey I Washed The Kidssoap. It’s the exact same scent, but It’s Raining Men lasts a lot longer than that bar of soap does. I originally bought this smaller 250ml bottle so I could test it out and see how I feel about it. Well, the verdict is in, because the 500ml bottle is sitting in my shower caddy!

China Glaze It’s Alive Nail Lacquer
China Glaze It’s Alive Nail Lacquer

This bottle doesn’t look empty, but it has about a third of it left and it’s gone really clumpy and hard to apply. It’s Alive is a polish from China Glaze‘s Halloween 2011 collection and it was absolutely stunning. It would go on smoothly and the chunks of glitter were absolutely gorgeous. It’s a shame the product eventually clumped up, I would’ve like to have kept this another year!

Crush Glitter Nail Color in Platinum
Crush Glitter Nail Color in Platinum

It’s no secret – I always wear glitter nail polish on my toes. I prefer silver, or rainbow/disco ball glitter, and have been doing so since my mid-teens. I don’t stick to a particular brand, but I did end up with three bottles of this Crush brand one (bought it at a Boathouse store, I’ve never seen the brand anywhere else) and this is the last of the bunch. The bottle is actually completely used up, even if it doesn’t appear that way. Since I have no brand loyalty for glitter polish, I probably wouldn’t repurchase again just so I could try something new.

Aveeno Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser
Aveeno Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser

Not much to say about this other than that this is probably the 15th bottle I’ve owned. I buy Aveeno cleansers on a regular basis (any of them, they’re all excellent) and will continue to do so. They’re gentle on the skin and they smell nice. Winner.

Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes
Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes

I’ve seen people go on and on about these Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes as if they were the second coming. My verdict? They work and they don’t smell offensive. Are they my favouritest ones ever?!?! No, but I would repurchase them if they were on sale.

TRESemme Thermal Creations Heat Protectant
TRESemme Thermal Creations Heat Protectant

I actually have a bone to pick with this TRESemme heat protectant:

It weighs my hair down.

It doesn’t matter how much or how little I use, it ends up making my hair lay flat when I really didn’t want it to be doing that. It also definitely increased the greasiness of my hair which didn’t help my “lay flat” situation either. I’ll admit this is the first heat protectant I’ve ever used, but I’ve never had problems with dry, or damaged hair prior to using this, so I don’t even know what possessed me to buy this product in the first place. (Oh wait, I do know… everyone on YOUTUBE!) I know others seem to enjoy this product, so perhaps it really just wasn’t for me. But I have to ask… does anyone ACTUALLY notice a difference in their hair (in a positive manner) when they use a heat protectant spray? I sure didn’t notice my hair being any healthier than it was before. As a bonus though, it really does smell quite nice. But that’s not enough to make me repurchase this one.

Biore Deep Cleansing Pore Strips
Biore Deep Cleansing Pore Strips

Oh man, these are glorious. Is there anyone out there who doesn’t love Biore pore strips? I’ve been using these for about 15 years now and pulling these strips off my face never gets old. As a note, I use the ones made for the nose on my chin as well. I’ve found that the nose strips seem to have a stronger adhesive which makes the nose ones more successful at pulling out gunk from the pores on my chin as well as my nose. The strips made specifically for chins didn’t seem to have the same effect on me.

Phew! That was it! there was a lot more there than I had expected and I’m happy that I can finally actually throw out some of my trash!

October 2013 Favourites

october2013favourites

Here’s a look at the beauty products I reached for the most throughout the month of October.

Revlon’s Super Lustrous lipstick in Fire and Ice
Revlon’s Super Lustrous lipstick in Fire and Ice

Fire and Ice is the first shade of Revlon lipstick I ever bought. It’s the kind of shade that makes me think I need to own every single colour from their Super Lustrous range, although realistically I have to acknowledge that no other colour is going to compare to this shade. The first time I wore it to work I got instantaneous positive reactions from a few coworkers. To me, it looks like an electric red with a hint of orange to it. The formula is comfortable on the lips and since it’s not matte (it’s a creme), it’s also not drying. Absolutely stunning product.

Hard Candy So Baked Bronzer in Hula Hula
Hard Candy So Baked Bronzer in Hula Hula

Hard Candy‘s bronzer in Hula Hula had become a favourite of mine throughout the summer. I wasn’t expecting to continue wearing it throughout the fall months as I thought it would be too dark and shimmery on my rapidly fading tan. However, this didn’t turn out to be the case! It is still a rather dark bronzer on my skin tone (even more so on the underside of my arm as you can see in the swatch) but when applied with a light hand, this gives a wonderful glow to the face. I don’t use bronzers to contour, so I end up sweeping this across the highpoints of my face. The bonus with this one is that because of the shimmery gold specs in the product, it can also double as a bronzey-blush with built in cheek highlight!

As a note: I don’t tend to wear this bronzer if I have a very shimmery eye look on as it can be a bit overpowering.

Joe Fresh Cream Blush in Apricot
Joe Fresh Cream Blush in Apricot

Joe Fresh is a new company to me. I reviewed a few of their products very recently and this particular one stayed in constant rotation in my morning makeup routine. I don’t have a lot of experience with cream blushes and was a bit worried about how good the staying power would be. Imagine my surprise when the Apricot (a peach shade that tends to learn slightly pink on my skin) stayed safely on my cheeks throughout an entire work day (applied around 7 am, removed around 5 pm) and was actually VISIBLE on the cotton pad I used at night to remove my makeup. I hope all of the blushes in their cream line is as good as this one because I am definitely interested in picking up a few more!

MAC’s Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft and Gentle
MAC’s Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft and Gentle

This is probably a staple in quite a lot of people’s makeup collections, and it has been in mine for several years as well. Lately I’ve found myself reaching for it more and more.MAC‘s Mineralize Skinfinish in Soft and Gentle is a lovely champagne highlighter that I used quite often throughout October to highlight my cheeks. In the past I’ve also used it as an eyeshadow,  however this month it was solely applied to my cheeks.

CoverGirl Clump Crusher in Very Black (water resistant)
CoverGirl Clump Crusher in Very Black (water resistant)

I’m only going to mention this product in this monthly favourites, but rest assured that this is a “forever favourite”. I, like many others, was swayed by the utterly insane hype over CoverGirl‘s Clump Crusher mascara on YouTube about a year ago. While I love my L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black in waterproof, the reality is that sometimes you just want to try something new. This mascara does not disappoint! The oddly-shaped brush helps me get from the roots of my lashes to the tip multiple times over without, you guessed it, any clumps. I personally don’t apply multiple layers of mascara, but just for giggles one time I decided to do it just to see I could get the mascara to clump. No such climps. This stuff is beyond fantastic.

My only gripe with it? And this is one I’m willing to overlook because the brush and formula are so amazing… But there is no true waterproof formula for this mascara. I regularly buy the water resistant formula of this mascara and I have to say it just does not hold up to water at all. If anything remotely damp gets near your eye, this mascara WILL smudge. However, as I’ve already said, this is a detail I’m willing to overlook considering how amazing the results can be.

Let me know if you had any particular beauty favourites throughout October!

Halloween 2013 – Sailor Moon

For Halloween this year, my friend suggested doing a joint costume. After a few suggestions (many of which were Final Fantasy-related on my end) we ended up choosing Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask.

It could not have turned out better.

The eye makeup is primarily why I’m posting this, but I’ll go into costume details afterwards. I had originally thought to look for an anime eye tutorial, but none of them looked like they would work on my hooded eyes. After some searching I came across Cara’s (Vintage or Tacky) Sailor Moon inspired tutorial. I had watched her tutorial years ago, but had completely forgotten about it! I’m not even going to pretend that my copy of her look is bang on, as she’s quite clearly got far better skills than myself. But as soon as I saw that look I was like “oh hell yes, this is it”.

I didn’t have all the same products, so here’s what I used:

Primer: Urban Decay Primer Potion with NYX’s Jumbo eyeshadow pencil in Milk on top. Primer Potion everywhere, Milk only on the lid.

Eyeshadows:  I first applied tape to the outer corner of my eyes to get a sharp edge. Urban Decay’s Blackout was used to carve out the cut crease, with Sleek’s Ink and Bolt (Matte 1 and 2 palettes) blended into the top of the edge to fade it out towards the brow. Sleek’sPow! was used to highlight the brow.

Moving on to the lid – I patted Sleek’s Bamm! all over the lid and topped it with a bright yellow shade from the Sephora Smokey Eyes 2 palette.  MAC’s Blacktrack fluidline was used to line the upper lash line and carve out the crease as well as extend it a bit further past my inner corner. Sleek’s Pillow Talk was used to highlight the inner corner of the eye.

I then took MAC’s Deep Truth and used it as a liner on the lower lash line, with Feline Kohl Power pencil on the inner rim.

Lashes: I didn’t curl my lashes as I knew I would be wearing false lashes and I find it harder to apply them if my lashes are already curled. L’Oreal Voluminous Carbon Black in waterproof went on first and Ardell demis were then applied.

Face: Revlon’s Colorstay liquid foundation (combination/oily) in 220 Natural Beige all over with very light bronzing from Revlon’s Photoready Bronzer in Bronzed & Chic.

Cheeks: Physicians Formula Happy Booster bronzer in Natural

Lips: (All MAC) Prep + prime for lips (I cannot recommend this enough! Without it my lip colour bleeds out of my lip lines even if I’m wearing a liner.) with Brick lip liner applied to outline and fill in the lips. Russian Red lipstick over top of all that finished the look. To make sure this lasted all night, I applied the lipstick once, blotted with a tissue and then reapplied the lipstick with a lip brush.

Other: The full face shot above is before I did my hair and before I suddenly remembered I had to paint on my crown! The crown was done rather quickly with L’Oreal’s Infallible eyeshadow in Goldmine (applied damp with water)  with slight shading from Urban Decay’s Half Baked. I used Inglot’s 382 (matte red) to create the crystal in the middle and then outlined the entire thing with Physicians Formula Ultra Black liquid liner.

As for my costume… let me first say I’d never even watched an episode of Sailor Moon before, although I had been very aware of the character while growing up. I had to do a decent amount of research into her costume to figure out how to put this all together and I watched my first Sailor Moon movie while putting this all together. Watching the movie definitely helped me get a feel for the character. In general, I got pretty lucky as I had most of the materials on hand. With no sewing machine or skills to speak of, this entire outfit was hand sewn haphazardly. It was time consuming, but it was a LOT of fun to make.

The skirt came from a full length formal skirt I had worn to some high school event over 14 years ago that I just happened to find at the bottom of a crate somewhere in the apartment. I couldn’t believe my luck! Since the skirt was rather large around the bottom, I cut the whole bottom off and proceeded to pleat it so that I not only would have a short skirt, but a decently pleated one to boot! The skirt was a disaster to create. I ended up sewing on the zipper backwards (and it’s still on there backwards!), the pleats wouldn’t stay put, (I ended using my flatiron to flatten the pleats as my proper iron just wasn’t cutting it.) and I was really iffy on the length. With no full length mirror in the apartment, I resorted to standing on the bed trying to get a proper look at the length in the makeup mirror! In the end, I think the skirt could definitely have been shorter.

The top was created from a long sleeve white shirt I had. I chopped off the sleeves and cut the bottom into a “V” shape. I then sewed in padding to make the edges stand out a bit by using some sticky medical badges that I layered over top of each other multiple times. The sailor cape was created by using the top half of the big skirt and the white stripes were hastily painted on with white acrylic paint. I then sewed it to the shirt so that it would stay put.

I lucked in with Christmas coming early to stores and picked up red Christmas bows at the dollar store to use for the front and back of the dress. White gloves with a painted red trim were probably the most expensive piece I bought (~$15). The boots were also salvaged from my teen years – I used to call them my “Buffy” boots and they were black suede. I painted them twice with red fabric paint, a white stripe at the top and used a gold marker to mark in the moon shapes. The choker was an extra strip of red Christmas bow that I snipped off and drew a moon on.

In all honesty, I didn’t have time for the hair bobbles, so I did my hair as best I could to resemble the meatball hairstyle of Serena/Usagi.

Full costumes! Tuxedo Mask with Sailor Moon

All dressed and ready to go, we hit up Church Street (they shut down the block for a street party every Halloween) and were stopped by easily 100+ people for photos. Never in my life have I felt like such a celebrity! There were times we couldn’t even move two feet forward through the crowd as people kept asking to take photos with us. The photo at the top of this post was done for free by a professional company and I was pretty happy to have a well-lit shot that shows off our costumes.

And of course, the obligatory bathroom selfies.
And of course, the obligatory bathroom selfies.

Everything stayed put the entire evening – I was so happy! I was pleased with how well the costume turned out, as I was expecting it to look quite shoddy. The only costume failure happened at the end of the night when the rubber soles of my suede boots completely cracked and disintegrated, probably due to their age. In the end I was happy I had painted them and was able to use my Buffy boots one last time!

Having never dressed up in a recognizable costume for the street party before, I have to say I love doing it and am definitely looking forward to it next year!
