5 Red(ish) Lipsticks for the Colder Months
It’s that time of the year when I start busting out all of my reds and burnt oranges. Fall and winter practically scream red(ish) lips to me, so I thought I’d let you know the ones I’ve been reaching for the most lately.
Some of these are old favourites (look at the nub left on that MAC lipstick!!), whereas some are a bit newer in my collection. New or old though… they’re all amazing lipsticks and I’ve been reaching for them constantly. And I just noticed a theme too (aside from the colour), they’re all pretty much matte finishes!
Bourjois‘ Rouge Buzz is definitely the brightest of the bunch! It’s an interesting orange/red mix. Some days I think it’s red, and some days I think it’s orange. Either way it’s a shade that lights up my face – I feel like my features come alive when I’m wearing this colour! It goes on a bit glossy but dries down over time to more of a matte finish.
Too Faced‘s Chill Pill is newer to me. They just launched it as part of a shade extension to their Peach Kiss range (lip swatch video here) and it’s glorious! It’s a burnt, rusty brick colour and it’s so perfectly seasonally appropriate that I keep grabbing for it over and over again. The Peach Kiss formula is a knock out too – smooth and comfortable to wear, it packs a ton of pigment AND smells like peaches and cream!
Oddly, I didn’t have a standalone photo of me wearing Bite Beauty‘s Crushed Chili, so I had to snag a screenshot from my Spice collection lip swatch video. That entire lipstick range was a solid home run, and I’ve found myself reaching for different shades depending on the season. Now that it’s November, it’s time for Crushed Chili to shine! It’s a deep red with a hint of brown to it and looks absolutely killer with a super simple eye look (think a warm crease, champagne lid and winged liner).
QUO‘s Date Night was just released in their Fall 2018 collection and it really surprised me. In the bullet it looked more like a pink, but on the lips it goes much more burnt red with maybe a hint of pink to it. I feel like it comes across slightly more muted in comparison to Bite‘s Crushed Chili and Too Faced‘s Chill Pill, so this might be for you if you’re looking for something a bit softer in the red family.
And what would a post about red lips be without mentioning MAC‘s Russian Red? This red is an absolute staple in my collection. It’s THE red to end all red.s I’m convinced there isn’t a person out there that can’t wear this shade. You can dress it up with a smokey eye, go vibrant with a bright orange and red eye, or dress it down with a simple eye – either way, Russian Red is foolproof. If I had to recommend one shade to you in this entire post, this would be it – because I feel like everyone needs to experience Russian Red at some point in their life!
Swatched out you can see that they’re all really heckin’ pigmented! The Bourjois and MAC shades are the extremes in this round up, but the three shades in the middle are all somewhat the same with slight tonal changes. If you like a red with a bit more pink – grab the QUO one. Like it with a little more orange? The Too Faced one is for you. And if you really want a burnt brick colour, then Bite‘s Crushed Chili is perfect.
Let me know if you start gravitating towards these kinds of shades in the cooler months! And if you do, let me know what shades you’ve been enjoying lately!
All of the lipsticks were sent to me over the years for consideration except for MAC's Russian Red which I purchased myself. Post contains affiliate links.

Holiday 2018: Too Faced Sugar Cookie & Tickled Peach Mini Palettes (Review & Swatches)
Too Faced launched a lot of holiday items this year, and two of the most surprising and unique ones were these mini palettes – Sugar Cookie and Tickled Peach!
What surprised me about these launches is that they’re not particularly holiday inspired (not a problem for me really, I like the departure from the traditional Christmas-y stuff), and yet they’re great for stocking stuffers or smaller presents for people. Each palette has 8 shadows which is fairly impressive given that the entire palette fits in the palm of my hand!
The Sugar Cookie seems to be an Ulta and TooFaced.com exclusive item as I haven’t spotted it at Sephora yet. It retails for $26 USD and contains 8 shadows – 2 of which have 0.95 grams of product, and the other 6 have 0.8 grams.
The Sugar Cookie palette is on the more neutral side of things with a touch of pink. And the best part? It actually smells like sugar cookies! Kind of a sweet, sugary slightly vanilla flavour.
The swatches are quite pigmented, and I did find they blended out nicely on the eye. Nom Nom is more of a particle shimmer than a smooth shimmer, but I liked it nonetheless.
- Cookie Pusher through the crease.
- Fresh from the Oven on the lid.
- Tough Cookie on the outer corner/crease.
- Butter & Love on the brow bone.
- Nom Nom on the inner corner.
I was happy that I was able to diffuse Tough Coookie to make it look more purple than the almost black it appears in the pan. Gives me a little bit more colour variety to work with, you know?
While Sugar Cookie was fun, it was really Tickled Peach that I was the most excited to use! Too Faced has definitely gone down the road of adding products to their Peaches & Cream range, but for me it’s the original Sweet Peach that really gets me excited.
And this mini palette smells just like the original Sweet Peach! I was so excited! I love that sharp peach candy scent, and I was so happy they decided to release this one since it’s basically an extension of the larger palette.
That being said, you definitely don’t need the larger palette in order to work with the mini because you do have a full set of shadows in here to cover every area on your eye: brow bone highlight, transition, lid and outer corner colours are all covered here.
- Peach Spice through the crease.
- Tickled on the lid.
- Parisian Peach on the inner corner.
- Plum Fun and Love Pit on the outer corner.
- Peach Bum on the brow bone.
I was wearing the look above in my October haul video and got a ton of compliments on it – seems I’m not the only one in love with the colour combination!
Final Thoughts
I’m pretty impressed with both two mini palettes that Too Faced has launched for the holidays, but it’s definitely Tickled Peach that has stolen my heart. I wish they’d continue to put out more and more products in the original Sweet Peach scent since it’s far and above my favourite.
What really stuck out about these palettes is that they’re incredibly compact, and yet they’re only one shadow short of their regular 9-pan palette structure (a la Peanut Butter & Jelly, Totally Cute, etc.). I like that the packaging doesn’t feel cheap either – with a palette this small you want it to feel sturdy, and since these replicate their larger Chocolate Bar packaging with the metallic tin and magnetic closure these do feel like they’re quite solid. There’s also a good mix of metallic and shimmers.
I’d love to see Too Faced put more of these types of mini palettes out with different themes. I love their big palettes, but it’s nice to see something a bit more compact.
The Too Faced Tickled Peach palette can be purchased at sephora.ca for $32 CAD or on sephora.com for $26 USD. The Sugar Cookie palette can be purchased at ulta.com for $26 USD.
